In this post we’re going to look at Italian vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about computers, email, social media, and the internet.
Il mio computer My Computer
Let’s start with some basic vocabulary that will help you talk about computer hardware: un computer (a computer), un computer portatile (a laptop), un desktop (a desktop), uno schermo (a screen), una tastiera (a keyboard), un mouse (a mouse), un tappetino per il mouse (a mouse pad), una stampante (a printer), una batteria (a battery), un cavo di alimentazione (a power cord), una webcam (a webcam), un microfono (a microphone), un auricolare (a headset), uno smartphone (a smartphone), un tablet (a tablet).
- Devo acquistare un nuovo computer.
I need to buy a new computer. - Hai un portatile o un computer da tavolo?
Do you have a laptop or a desktop? - Il mio schermo è rotto.
My screen is cracked.
- La mia tastiera è rotta.
My keyboard is broken. - Devo ricaricare il mio (computer) portatile/telefono.
I have to recharge my laptop/phone. - Ho bisogno di una nuova batteria per il mio mouse.
I need a new battery for my mouse. - La mia webcam è accesa/spenta.

I don’t use a computer. I can do everything on my tablet.
E-mail Email
Now let’s look at some vocabulary that you can use to talk about email: un’e-mail (an email), spedire/mandare/inviare un’e-mail (to send an email), ricevere un’e-mail (to get/receive an email), allegato (attachment), allegare una foto/file (to attach a photo/file), rispondere a una mail (to reply to an email), rispondere a tutti (to reply all), inoltrare un’e-mail (to forward an email).
- Devo controllare la mia posta elettronica.
I need to check my email. - Qual è il tuo indirizzo e-mail?
What’s your email address? - Sto scrivendo un’e-mail al mio amico/ capo/ collega.
Sto scrivendo un’e-mail alla mia amica/ capo/ collega.
I’m writing an email to my friend/boss/colleague. - Ricevo troppe e-mail.
I get too many emails. - Ho dimenticato l’allegato.
I forgot the attachment. - Si prega di rispondere a tutti.
Please reply all. - Per favore rispondi solo a me.
Please reply just to me. - Potresti inoltrarmi la email?

Messaggini e app Text Messages and Apps
If you’re sending a text message instead of an email, you’ll need to know: un messaggino / sms (a text), un messaggio (a message), inviare un testo (to send a text), ricevere un messaggino / sms (to get/receive a text), rispondere a un messaggino / sms (to answer a text), inviare un sms / messaggio di gruppo (to send a group text), un’app (an app), scaricare un’app (to download an app), aggiornare un’app (to update an app), eliminare un’app (to delete an app).
- Ricevo un sms/messaggino.
I’m getting a text/message. - Ti mando un sms.
I’ll send you a text. - Scrivimi l’indirizzo, per favore.
Text me the address, please. - Sto scrivendo un sms / messaggino al mio ragazzo / ragazza.
I’m writing a text to my boyfriend/girlfriend. - Ho inviato un messaggio al gruppo.
I sent a message to the group. - Non inviare messaggi mentre guidi!
Don’t send texts while you’re driving! - Non ho ricevuto il tuo messaggio, non avevo segnale.
I didn’t get your text, I had no signal. - Usi WhatsApp o un’altra app di messaggistica?
Do you use WhatsApp or another messaging app? - Questa è un’ottima app, ma non è gratuita.
This is a great app, but it’s not free. - Ho cancellato quell’app perché non la uso mai.

Internet The Internet
Here’s some vocabulary that will help you talk about the most common things that you do online: Internet ad alta velocità (high speed internet), sito web (website), pagina web (webpage), collegamento (link), URL (URL), browser (browser), motore di ricerca (search engine), andare online (to go online), caricare (to upload), scaricare (to download), router (router), modem (modem), Wifi (WiFi), accedere (to log in), disconnettersi (to log off).
- Leggo molti blog/ giornali/ articoli online.
I read a lot of blogs/newspapers/articles online. - Passo molto tempo online.
I spend a lot of time online. - Ho un abbonamento digitale/online.
I have a digital/online subscription. - Ho dimenticato la mia password.
I forgot my password. - Sto caricando un file/il mio CV.
I’m uploading a file/my CV. - Sto scaricando una canzone/foto.
I’m downloading a song/photo. - Non riesco a collegarmi online, devo riavviare il mio router.

Of course, if you’re talking about the internet you may want to talk about social media: usare i social (media) (to use social media), essere su Facebook/Twitter (to be on Facebook/Twitter), avere un account su Instagram/LinkedIn (to have an account on Instagram/LinkedIn), seguire un account (to follow an account), mettere mi piace a un post (to like a post), lasciare un commento (to leave a comment), rispondere a un commento (to reply to a comment), postare/pubblicare una foto (to post a photo), cancellare un account (to delete an account).
