In this post we’re going to look at German vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about computers, email, social media, and the internet.
Mein Computer My Computer
Let’s start with some basic vocabulary that will help you talk about computer hardware: der Computer, -Ø (computer), der Laptop, -s (laptop), der Desktop-PC, -s (desktop), der Bildschirm, -e (screen), die Tastatur, -en (keyboard), die Maus, -¨e (mouse), das Mousepad, -s (mouse pad), der Drucker, -Ø (printer), die Batterie, -en / der Akku, -s (battery), das Stromkabel, -Ø (power cord), die Webcam, -s (webcam), das Mikrofon, -e, das Mikro, -s (microphone), das Headset, -s (headset), das Smartphone, -s (smartphone), das Tablet, -s (tablet).
- Ich muss einen neuen Computer kaufen.
I need to buy a new computer. - Hast du einen Laptop oder einen Desktop-PC?
Do you have a laptop or a desktop? - Mein Bildschirm hat einen Riss.
My screen is cracked.
- Meine Tastatur ist kaputt.
My keyboard is broken. - Ich muss meinen Laptop / mein Handy aufladen.
I have to recharge my laptop/phone. - Ich brauche eine neue Batterie für meine Maus.
I need a new battery for my mouse. - Meine Webcam ist abgeschaltet.
My webcam is on/off. - Kann ich dein Headset für ein Meeting ausleihen?
Can I borrow a headset for my meeting? - Ich benutze keinen Computer. Ich kann alles mit meinem Tablet machen.
I don’t use a computer. I can do everything on my tablet.
Email Email
Now let’s look at some vocabulary that you can use to talk about email: eine Mail (an email message), (jemandem) eine Mail schicken (to send [someone] an email), eine Mail bekommen / erhalten (to get/receive an email), der Anhang, -¨e (attachment), ein Foto / eine Datei anhängen (to attach a photo/file), eine Mail beantworten (to reply to an email), allen antworten (to reply all), eine Mail weiterleiten (to forward an email).
- Ich muss meine Email checken.
I need to check my email. - Wie ist deine Email-Adresse?
What’s your email address? - Ich schreibe meinem Freund / meiner Freundin // meinem Chef / meiner Chefin // meinem Mitarbeiter / meiner Mitarbeiterin eine Mail.
I’m writing an email to my friend/boss/colleague. - Ich kriege zu viele Mails.
I get too many emails. - Ich habe den Anhang vergessen.
I forgot the attachment. - Antworten Sie bitte allen.
Please reply all. - Antworten Sie bitte nur mir.
Please reply just to me. - Könnten Sie die Mail an mich weiterleiten?
Could you forward the email to me?
SMS und Apps Text Messages and Apps
If you’re sending a text message instead of an email, you’ll need to know: eine SMS (a text), eine Nachricht, -en (a message), eine SMS schicken / senden (to send a text), eine SMS bekommen / erhalten (to get/receive a text), eine SMS beantworten (to answer a text), eine Gruppennachricht senden (to send a group text), eine App, -s (an app),eine App runterladen / downloaden (to download an app), eine App aktualisieren (to update an app), eine App löschen (to delete an app).
- Ich bekomme eine SMS / Nachricht.
I’m getting a text/message. - Ich schicke dir eine Nachricht / SMS.
I’ll send you a text. - Texte mir bitte die Adresse.
Text me the address, please. - Ich schreibe eine SMS an meinen Freund / meine Freundin.
I’m writing a text to my boyfriend/girlfriend. - Ich habe die Nachricht an die Gruppe geschickt.
I sent a message to the group. - Texte nicht beim Fahren!
Don’t send texts while you’re driving! - Ich habe deine SMS nicht bekommen, ich hatte keinen Empfang.
I didn’t get your text, I had no signal. - Benutzt du WhatsApp oder sonst irgendeine Nachrichten-App?
Do you use WhatsApp or another messaging app? - Das ist eine tolle App, aber sie ist nicht umsonst.
This is a great app, but it’s not free. - Ich habe die App gelöscht, weil ich sie nie benutze.
I deleted that app because I never use it. - Die App hat mein Handy abstürzen lassen.
This app made my phone crash. - Ich habe zu viele Apps auf meinem Handy / Tablet.
I have too many apps on my phone/tablet.
Das Internet The Internet
Here’s some vocabulary that will help you talk about the most common things that you do online: Breitband-Internet (high speed internet), die Website, -s (website), die Webseite, -n (webpage), der Link, -s (link), die URL (URL), der Browser, -Ø (browser), die Suchmaschine, -n (search engine), ans Netz gehen (to go online), uploaden, hochladen, heraufladen, ins Netz stellen (to upload), downloaden, herunterladen (to download), der Router, Ø (router), das Modem, -s (modem), das WiFi (WiFi), sich einloggen (to log in), sich ausloggen (to log off).
- Ich lese viele Blogs / Zeitungen / Artikel im Netz.
I read a lot of blogs/newspapers/articles online. - Ich verbringe viel Zeit im Netz.
I spend a lot of time online. - Ich habe ein digitales / online Abo.
I have a digital/online subscription. - Ich habe mein Kennwort vergessen.

I can’t get online, I need to restart my router. - Ich habe in fünf Minuten einen Videoanruf.
I have a video call in five minutes. - Ich kann dich hören, aber das Video ist eingefroren.
I can hear you, but the video is frozen. - Muss ich mich für das Meeting anmelden?
Do I need to sign in to the meeting? - Ich logge mich aus und starte das Meeting neu.
I’ll log off and restart the meeting. - Ich brauche eine gute Internetverbindung, denn ich arbeite im Homeoffice.
I need good internet service because I work remotely. - Wie ist dein WiFi-Kennwort?
What’s your WiFi password? - Hast du eine Website? Wie ist die URL?

Soziale Medien Social media
Of course, if you’re talking about the internet you may want to talk about social media: soziale Medien benutzen (to use social media), auf Facebook / Twitter sein (to be on Facebook/Twitter), ein Instagram/LinkedIn-Konto haben (to have an account on Instagram/LinkedIn), einem Nutzer folgen (to follow an account), einen Post liken (to like a post), einen Kommentar hinterlassen (to leave a comment), auf einen Kommentar antworten (to reply to a comment), ein Foto posten / hochladen (to post a photo), ein Benutzerkonto löschen (to delete an account).

You shouldn’t argue with strangers on social media. - Ich hasse soziale Medien. Ich lösche alle meine Benutzerkonten!
