In this post we’ll take a look at vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about one of the most important rooms in the house. We’re not talking about the kitchen, but you can check that out here. In this post, we’ll focus on French vocabulary for the bathroom. First, you’ll learn vocabulary and expressions related to public toilets in French. Then we’ll move on to vocabulary for talking about the bathroom at home. Next we’ll talk about French vocabulary for getting clean. After that we’ll move on to vocabulary for perfume and makeup. Finally we’ll wrap up with vocabulary and expressions that you can use to ask someone if you can use their bathroom.
Public Toilets in French
First let’s start with public toilets. If you’re visiting a city and doing a lot of sightseeing, chances are you’re going to need to use the toilet at some point. Which means you’ll need to know: les toilettes publiques public toilet; un urinoir urinal; les toilettes pour hommes men’s room; les toilettes pour femmes ladies’ room.
- Où sont les toilettes ?
Where are the restrooms? - Y a-t-il des toilettes publiques près d’ici ?
Is there a public toilet nearby? - Où se trouvent les toilettes pour hommes/femmes ?
Where’s the men’s room/ladies’ room? - Il y a des toilettes publiques automatiques et autonettoyantes dans le parc.
There are automatic, self-cleaning public toilets in the park. - Les toilettes publiques sont-elles gratuites ou dois-je payer ?
Is the public toilet free or do I have to pay? - Veuillez payer le préposé/la préposée aux toilettes.
Please pay the attendant. - Les toilettes sont occupées.
The toilet is occupied. - Les toilettes sont hors-service.
The toilet is out of order. - Nettoyage (des toilettes) en cours/En cours de nettoyage.
The toilet is being cleaned. - Il y a des toilettes/urinoirs à côté de la sortie.
There are toilets/urinals next to the exit.
Talking about the Bathroom at Home
Next we’ll turn to bathroom basics at home. In most bathrooms, you’ll find: une douche a shower, un lavabo a sink, une baignoire a bathtub, les toilettes/WC a toilet, du papier toilette toilet paper, un miroir a mirror, une armoire de toilette/à pharmacie a vanity/medicine cabinet, une serviette de bain a bath towel, une serviette de toilette a hand towel, un porte-serviette towel rack.
- Je prends une douche.
I’m taking a shower. - Je prends une douche tous les matins.
I take a shower every morning. - Je suis sale/en sueur. J’ai besoin de prendre une douche.
I’m dirty/sweaty. I need to take a shower. - Je prends un bain.
I’m taking a bath.
- J’ai besoin de me laver le visage.
I need to wash my face. - Les toilettes sont à côté de la baignoire.
The toilet is next to the bathtub. - Le lavabo est petit.
The bathroom sink is small. - Il y a un miroir au-dessus du lavabo.
There’s a mirror above the sink. - L’aspirine est dans l’armoire à pharmacie.
The aspirin is in the medicine cabinet. - Il y a une serviette propre sur le porte-serviette.
A clean towel is hanging on the towel rack. - Merci de/Veuillez rabattre le siège des toilettes.
Please close the toilet seat.
French Vocabulary for Getting Clean
Now let’s talk about washing, bathing, and getting clean. A lot of what we do in the bathroom is related to washing and getting clean: le savon soap, le shampooing shampoo, l’après-shampooing (m.) conditioner, le déodorant deodorant, le dentifrice toothpaste, la brosse à dents toothbrush, le rasoir razor, la crème à raser shaving cream, le fil dentaire dental floss, la crème hydratante moisturizer/moisturizing cream, la brosse à cheveux (hair)brush, le peigne comb, le sèche-cheveux blow dryer, la pince à épiler tweezers, le coupe-ongles nail clipper.
- Je me lave les mains.
I’m washing my hands. - J’ai besoin de me laver les mains.
I need to wash my hands. - Où est le savon ?
Where’s the soap?
Brushing Your Teeth
- Je me brosse les dents et j’utilise du fil dentaire tous les soirs.
I brush and floss my teeth every night. - Nous avons besoin de plus de dentifrice.
We need more toothpaste. - Ma brosse à dents est bleue, et ta brosse à dents est blanche.
My toothbrush is blue, and your toothbrush is white.
Washing Your Hair
- Je me brosse/peigne les cheveux devant le miroir.
I brush/comb my hair in front of the mirror. - Les peignes et les brosses sont dans le tiroir à côté du lavabo.
The combs and brushes are in the drawer next to the sink. - On n’a plus de shampooing.
We’re out of shampoo. - Utilisez-vous un après-shampooing ?
Do you use conditioner?
Shaving and More
- Je me rase dans la douche.
I shave in the shower. - J’ai besoin d’acheter un nouveau rasoir.
I need to buy a new razor. - Où est la crème à raser ?
Where’s the shaving cream? - Cette crème hydratante sent vraiment bon.
This moisturizer smells really good. - J’utilise un déodorant naturel.
I use a natural deodorant. - Où est la pince à épiler ?
Where are the tweezers?
Parfum et maquillage Perfume and Makeup
Now we’ll talk about perfume and makeup. Some people’s morning bathroom routines include more than the basics. If you’re one of those people, you may want to know: le parfum perfume, l’eau (f.) de Cologne cologne, le maquillage makeup, le mascara mascara, l’ombre/le fard à paupières eye shadow, l’eyeliner (m.) eyeliner, la poudre (de maquillage) powder, le rouge à lèvres lipstick, le vernis à ongles nail polish, le rouge/fard à joues/blush rouge, le gel coiffant/pour cheveux hair gel, la laque pour les cheveux hairspray.
- Tu te maquilles ?
Do you wear makeup? - Je mets du maquillage tous les matins.
I put on makeup every morning. - J’aime ton parfum/eau de Cologne. Il/Elle sent bon.
I like your cologne/perfume. It smells nice. - Je mets du mascara et de l’eye-liner.
I’m putting on mascara and eyeliner. - Quelle couleur de vernis à ongles avez-vous ?
What color nail polish do you have? - J’utilise de la laque pour les cheveux tous les jours.
I use hair gel every day. - Avez-vous de la laque pour les cheveux ?

Asking to Use the Bathroom
Finally, let’s talk about how you can ask to use the bathroom. When we’re in there, we take care of some basic biological needs that you probably don’t need to know how to talk about. But since, hey, you never know, we’ll include some of that as well.
- Puis-je utiliser vos toilettes ?
Can I use your bathroom? - J’ai besoin d’aller aux toilettes.
I have to go to the bathroom. - Je dois uriner/aller à la selle.
I have to urinate/defecate. - Je dois faire pipi/caca.
I have to pee/poop. - Je dois faire la petite commission/la grosse commission.
I have to go number one/number two. (humorous) - Où sont les toilettes (s’il vous plaît) ?
Where’s the bathroom? - Les toilettes sont au fond du couloir, à gauche/droite.
The bathroom is down the hall, to the left/right. - N’entrez pas, c’est occupé! Il y a quelqu’un./Il y a du monde.
Don’t come in! Someone’s in here. - Il n’y a plus de papier toilette !
There’s no toilet paper left! - S’il vous plaît, tirez la chasse d’eau.
Please flush the toilet. - Les toilettes sont bouchées. Tu as une ventouse ?
The toilet is clogged. Do you have a plunger?
