In this post we’re going to look at some useful vocabulary and expressions to talk about a room where you probably spend a lot of time, the living room. (If you’re thinking, hey, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, we’ve got you covered. Check out this post.)
Un canapé grand et confortable: A Big Comfortable Sofa
Let’s start with the les meubles (m.) /le mobilier furniture and other basic things that you’re likely to find in the living room: un sofa/un canapé a sofa/couch, un fauteuil an armchair, une table basse a coffee table, une table a table, une chaise a chair, une étagère a shelf, un petit divan/une ottomane an ottoman, une cheminée a fireplace (or chimney), une porte a door, une fenêtre a window, le sol the floor, un mur a wall, le plafond the ceiling, le placard a closet.
- Notre sofa est vraiment confortable.
Our sofa is really comfortable. - Je m’assois souvent dans le fauteuil pour lire.
I often sit in the armchair and read. - Il y a beaucoup de livres sur les étagères.
There are a lot of books on the bookshelves.
- La télécommande est sur la table basse.
The remote control is on the coffee table. - Je pose mes pieds sur le petit divan quand je regarde la télévision.
I put my feet on the ottoman when I watch television. - Il y a une petite table en face de la fenêtre.
There’s a small table in front of the window. - Merci de laisser vos chaussures à l’entrée.
Please leave your shoes next to the door. - Nous accrochons nos manteaux dans le placard.
We hang our coats in the closet. - Beaucoup de lumière entre par la fenêtre.
A lot of sunlight comes through the window. - Le salon donne sur un jardin.
The living room looks out over a garden.
Des coussins multicolores: Colorful Cushions
In addition to the basic pieces of furniture you probably have in your living room, you most likely have: une moquette a carpet, un tapis a rug, un coussin a cushion, une couverture a blanket, une lampe a lamp, un abat-jour a lampshade, une photo(graphie) a photograph, une peinture/un tableau a painting, un cadre a picture frame, un vase a vase, des rideaux curtains.
- Il faut qu’on remplace la moquette dans cette chambre.
We need to replace the carpet in this room. - Il y a un beau tapis à l’entrée.
There’s a beautiful rug in front of the door. - Nous avons beaucoup de coussins et de couvertures sur le canapé.
We have a lot of cushions and blankets on the sofa. - Cette lampe a un bel abat-jour.
That lamp has a beautiful lampshade. - Nous avons des photos de famille encadrées sur le mur.
We have photos of our family in frames on the wall. - Où devrions-nous accrocher ce nouveau tableau ?
Where should we hang this new painting? - J’ai besoin de mettre des fleurs dans le vase.
I need to put some flowers in the vase. - Il fait noir là-dedans. Ouvre les rideaux s’il te plaît.
It’s dark in here. Please open the curtains.
Trop de télécommandes ! Too Many Remote Controls!
Nowadays there are loads of gadgets in the typical living room. How many of these do you have? un ordinateur a computer, le wi-fi WiFi, une horloge a clock, une télé(vision) a television, une stéréo a stereo, une radio a radio, un haut-parleur a speaker, un lecteur (de) DVD a DVD player, un modem a modem, un routeur a router, une télécommande a remote control.
- Quel est votre mot de passe wi-fi ?
What’s your WiFi password? - On a besoin d’une nouvelle télé.
We need a new television. - Où est la télécommande pour la télé ?
Where’s the remote control for the television? - Nous avons un lecteur DVD, mais on ne s’en sert jamais.
We have a DVD player, but we never use it. - Les haut-parleurs sont petits mais le son est excellent.
The speakers are small, but they sound great. - Je dois redémarrer le modem.
I need to restart the modem. - L’horloge est une antiquité, mais elle fonctionne toujours !
The clock is an antique, but it still works!
Travaux ménagers et réparations: Housework and Repairs
Like any room in the house, you’ve got to keep the living room clean. And sometimes, you may want to redecorate. Which brings us to: nettoyer to clean, ranger, mettre de l’ordre to tidy up, un aspirateur a vacuum cleaner, passer l’aspirateur to vacuum the floor, dépoussiérer to dust, nettoyer les fenêtres to clean the windows, peindre to paint, réparer to fix/repair, remplacer to replace.
- Le salon est en désordre. On doit le ranger avant que nos invités arrivent.
The living room is messy. We need to tidy up before our guests get here. - Je dois passer l’aspirateur sur la moquette.
I have to vacuum the carpet. - Les étagères sont poussiéreuses ! J’ai besoin de les dépoussiérer.
The bookshelves are dusty! I need to dust them. - Les fenêtres sont sales. Nous devons les nettoyer.
The windows are dirty. We need to clean them. - Essuie la table basse avec un essuie-tout.
Please wipe the coffee table with a paper towel. - Je veux peindre les murs d’une autre couleur.
I want to paint the walls a different color. - Le vase est cassé. Peut-on le réparer ?
The vase is broken. Can we repair it? - Ces rideaux sont vraiment vieux. Remplaçons-les.
Those curtains are really old. Let’s replace them. - Il y a une grosse tache sur le tapis.
There’s a big stain on the carpet.
Regardons un film. Let’s watch a film.
How do you use your living room?
- On regarde la télé tous les soirs.
We watch television every evening. - Asseyons-nous sur le canapé et discutons.
Let’s sit on the sofa and talk. - Je pose toujours mes pieds sur le petit divan et je me détends.
I always put my feet on the ottoman and relax. - Regardons un film ce soir.
Let’s watch a film tonight. - Y a-t-il quelque chose de bien à la télé / sur Netflix ?
Is there anything good on TV / Netflix? - Je me suis endormi(e) dans le fauteuil en lisant un livre.
I fell asleep in the chair reading a book. - On joue aux cartes sur la table.
We’re playing cards at the table. - Les enfants jouent à des jeux sur l’ordinateur.
The kids are playing games on the computer. - Asseyez-vous ici, s’il vous plaît. Voulez-vous un verre de vin ?
Please sit here. Would you like a glass of wine? - Mettons des bougies et de la musique douce.
Let’s put on candles and soft music. - Je vais m’allonger sur le canapé et faire une sieste.
I’m going to lie down on the sofa and take a nap.
