When fall is here, it’s a good time to look at some vocabulary and expressions that will come in handy to talk about the weather, the colors, and the warm, cozy nights.

Farben Colors

Blätter Leaves and schöne Farben beautiful colors are probably two of the first things that you think about when you think of fall. rote Blätter red leaves, orangene Blätter orange leaves, gelbe Blätter yellow leaves, goldene Blätter gold leaves are everywhere at first, and then braune Blätter fallen auf den Boden brown leaves fall to the ground.  Here is some leaf-peeping vocabulary in German.

• Die Blätter wechseln ihre Farbe..
  The leaves are changing color.
• Die Bäume sehen zu dieser Jahreszeit wunderschön aus.
  The trees are beautiful this time of year.
• Der ganze Hang ist golden.
  The whole hillside is gold.
• Die Blätter fallen von den Bäumen.
  The leaves are falling off the trees.

Es wird kälter. It’s getting colder.

Kühles Wetter Cool Weather is probably the other thing that you first think of when you think of fall. If you live in a place where the seasons change a lot, you may want to say:

• Das Wetter ist kühl.
  The weather is cool.
• Es ist regnerisch und bewölkt.
  It’s rainy and cloudy.
• Die Tage sind frostig und die Nächte sind kalt.
  The days are chilly, and the nights are cold.
• Der Wind bläst die Blätter durch die Luft.
  The wind is blowing the leaves.
• Der Himmel ist grau.
  The sky is gray.

Die Tage werden kürzer.The days are getting shorter.

With shorter fall days, you may want to say:

• Wann kommt die Sommerzeit?
  When is daylight savings time?
• Hast du daran gedacht, deine Uhr zurückzustellen?
  Did you remember to turn your clock back?
• Es wird früh dunkel.
  It gets dark early.
• Die Sonne geht früh unter.
  The sun sets early.
• Es gibt weniger Sonnenlicht.
  There’s less sunlight.

Herbstbekleidung: Autumn clothes

All of these fall changes probably mean a change in your wardrobe, too.

• Ich brauche meine Shorts und T-Shirts nicht.
  I don’t need my shorts and tee shirts.
• Ich ziehe einen Pullover an.
  I’m putting on a sweater.
• Ich muss eine Jacke tragen.
  I need to wear a jacket.
• Ich muss eine Mütze/einen Hut und einen Regenmantel tragen.
  I need to wear a hat and a raincoat.
• Wo ist mein Schirm?
  Where’s my umbrella?
• Lasst uns eine zusätzliche Wolldecke auf das Bett legen.
  Let’s put an extra blanket on the bed.

Ruhige, stille Abende: Calm, Quiet Evenings

Many people find fall to be the most relaxing season, and other people find it to be a bit sad.

• Ich bleibe heute Abend zuhause.
  I’m staying in tonight.
• Heute Abend lese ich ein gutes Buch.
  I’m reading a good book tonight.
• Ich trinke eine Tasse Tee.
  I’m drinking a cup of tea.
• Im Herbst gehe ich früher schlafen.
  I go to bed earlier in the fall.
• Im Herbst fühle ich mich immer traurig.
  I always get sad in the fall.
• Ich vermisse die Sonne und die langen Sommertage.
  I miss the sun and the long days of summer.
• Der Herbst deprimiert mich.
  Fall depresses me.
• Ich liebe den Herbst, das ist meine Lieblingsjahreszeit.
  I love fall, it’s my favorite season.
• Ich mag den Herbst nicht, da ist es dunkel und kalt und deprimierend.
  I don’t like fall, it’s dark and cold and depressing
