Stimmst du zu? Do you agree? Giving Opinions, Agreeing, and Disagreeing in German
In this post we’ll learn how to give opinions in German. That means that we’ll cover some German vocabulary and expressions that you can use to express your opinion, ask about other people’s opinions, agree, or disagree with someone. First we’ll look learn some expressions that you can use to ask others for their opinions. Then we’ll learn how to say that you like something. Next, we’ll look at expressions you can use to say that you don’t like something. After that we’ll see expressions for agreeing and disagreeing. Finally, we’ll end with ways to say that you think someone is making a good point, or not such a good point.

Let’s start with some questions that you can ask to find out other people’s opinions.

What’s your opinion on this topic? - Stimmst du mir zu?

- Wie hat dir die Party/der Kurs gefallen?
How did you like the party/ the class? - Würdest du dieses Restaurant/dieses Buch empfehlen?
Do you recommend this restaurant/ this book? - Warum siehst du das so?
Why do you feel that way? - Kannst du deine Meinung erläutern?
Can you explain your opinion? - Was gefällt dir daran? Warum gefällt es/er/sie dir?
What do you like about it? Why do you like it? - Was gefällt dir daran nicht? Warum gefällt es/er/sie dir nicht?
What don’t you like about it? Why don’t you like it?
Ich fand den Film echt gut. I liked the film very much.
Now let’s look at some expressions that you can use to express that you like something. Some vocabulary that might come in handy is: sehr/wirklich/echt/total gut – really good, super, toll – great, interessant – interesting, faszinierend – fascinating, macht sehr/echt/total Spaß; sehr schön – very enjoyable, originell – original, logisch – logical.
- Der Film war echt gut/toll.
The film was really good/ great. - Das Restaurant war wunderbar/ fantastisch.
The restaurant was wonderful/ fantastic. - Ich hatte echt Spaß auf der Party.
I had a great time at the party. - Ich fand das Buch faszinierend.
I thought the book was fascinating. - Ich fand den Artikel echt interessant.
I found the article really interesting. - Ich finde dieses Lied/diesen Song total gut.
I think that this song is really good.
Mir hat der Film überhaupt/gar nicht gefallen. I really didn’t like the film at all.
Now let’s look at some expressions that you can use to express that you don’t like something. Some vocabulary that might come in handy is: echt nicht gut / sehr schlecht – really bad, furchtbar, schrecklich – terrible, langweilig – boring, schrecklich – awful, unoriginell; nicht/wenig originell – unoriginal, unlogisch – illogical.
- Der Film war echt schlecht/furchtbar.
Der Film war echt Scheiße (familiar); echt Mist.
The film was really bad/ awful. - Das Restaurant war furchtbar.
The restaurant was terrible. - Die Party war langweilig.
The party was boring. - Ich fand das Buch nicht originell.
I thought the book was unoriginal. - Ich fand den Artikel völlig unlogisch.
I found the article really illogical. - Ich finde dieses Lied/diesen Song schrecklich.
I think that this song is terrible. - Ich kann ihn/sie/dieses Lied/es hier nicht ausstehen.
Ich kann ihn/sie/dieses Lied/es hier nicht ab.
I can’t stand him/ her/ this song/ this place.
Ich stimme dir zu. I agree with you.
Here are some expressions that you can use to show that you agree or disagree with someone.
- Wir sind einer/derselben Meinung. Da stimme ich (dir) zu.
We agree. I agree with you/ that. - Wir sind unterschiedlicher/nicht einer Meinung. Da stimme ich (dir) nicht zu.
We disagree. I don’t agree with you/ that. - Du hast recht/Recht. Du hast absolut Recht.
You’re right. You’re absolutely right. - Du hast unrecht/Unrecht. Du hast total unrecht.
You’re wrong. You’re totally wrong. - Ich bin derselben Meinung, was dieses Buch/diesen Film angeht.
I feel the same way about this book/ film. - Ich bin anderer Meinung über dieses Lied/diese(n) Schriftsteller(in).
I feel differently about this song/ writer. - Da bin ich derselben Meinung.
I have the same opinion about it. - Da bin ich anderer Meinung.
I have a different opinion about it.
Das macht wirklich Sinn. That makes a lot of sense.
Here are some expressions and vocabulary that you can use if you think someone is making a good point.
- Das ist wirklich ein gutes Argument/eine gute Beobachtung.
That’s a really good point. - Das ergibt/macht wirklich Sinn.
That makes a lot of sense. - Das ist völlig logisch.
That’s completely logical. - Das beweist/zeigt, dass du Recht hast / dass deine Ansicht richtig ist.
That proves your point/ opinion. - Sie hat echt gute Beispiele geliefert.
She gave really good examples. - Er hat viel recherchiert, um seine Behauptung zu untermauern.
He did a lot of research to support his claim. - Der Artikel/ Das Interview hat mich umgestimmt.
The article/ The interview changed my mind. - Das ist ein sehr überzeugendes / starkes Argument.
That’s very a convincing/ strong argument.
Das macht keinen Sinn. That makes no sense!
- Das ist wirklich ein schlechtes Beispiel.
That’s a really bad example. - Das macht/ergibt keinen Sinn.
That makes no sense. - Das ist total unlogisch.
That’s totally illogical. - Du lieferst keine Beweise für dein Argument.
You’re not proving your point. - Du hast keine Beispiele für deine Behauptungen.
You have no examples of what you’re saying. - Es gibt keine Belege, die deine Behauptung untermauern.
There’s no evidence that supports your claim. - Das ist (doch) lächerlich/absurd/blödsinnig/idiotisch.
That’s ridiculous/ absurd/ stupid/ idiotic.
