Valentine’s Day is coming up, so let’s cover some German vocabulary and expressions to help you talk about all things love.

Liebst du mich? Do you love me?

Let’s start with some basics. If you’re talking to your significant other, you might want to use a pet name like Schatz sweetheart, Liebling darling, mein Liebster my love, or Baby baby.

• Ich liebe dich.
  I love you.
• Ich liebe sie.
  I love her.
• Ich liebe ihn.
  I love him.

• Das ist mein Freund/meine Freundin.
  This is my boyfriend/girlfriend.
• Das ist mein Mann/meine Frau.
  This is my husband/wife.
• Alles Liebe zum Valentinstag!
  Happy Valentine’s Day!
• Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Hochzeitstag.
  Happy Anniversary.
• Ich vermisse dich/Du fehlst mir.
  I miss you.

Ich mag sie sehr. I really like her.

If someone has caught your eye, you might want to say:

• Ich mag ihn/sie sehr.
  I really like him/her.
• Er/sie sieht echt gut aus.
  He/She is really good-looking.
• Sie ist schön.
  She’s beautiful.
• Er ist gutaussehend.
  He’s handsome.
• Er/sie ist lustig/hat Humor.
  He/She is funny.
• Er/sie ist interessant.
  He/She is interesting.
• Er/sie ist intelligent.
  He/She is smart.

Darf ich dich zum Abendessen einladen? Do you want to have dinner with me?

Maybe there’s a mutual attraction? One way to find out is to ask.

• Würdest du gern mit mir ausgehen?
  Do you want to go out with me?
• Darf ich dich zu einem Kaffee/Drink einladen?
  Do you want to have coffee/drinks with me?
• Lass uns zusammen zu Abend essen.
  Let’s have dinner together.
• Ich fand es echt schön, dich kennenzulernen.
  I really enjoyed getting to know you.
• Sollen wir irgendwann nochmal zusammen ausgehen?
  Do you want to go out again some time?
• Ich möchte dich wiedersehen.
  I want to see you again.
• Ich möchte dich küssen.
  I want to kiss you.

Wir sind jetzt ein Jahr zusammen. We’ve been together for a year.

If you’re in a long-term relationship, you might want to know how to say:

• Wie lange seid ihr schon zusammen?
  How long have you two been together?
• Wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt?
  How did you two meet?
• Wir haben uns bei der Arbeit/in der Schule/Uni kennengelernt.
  We met at work/school/university.
• Wir haben uns auf einer Party/in einer Bar kennengelernt.
  We met at a party/bar.
• Wir haben uns online kennengelernt.
  We met online.
• Unsere Freunde/Eltern haben uns einander vorgestellt.
  Our friends/parents introduced us.
• Wir sind seit einem Jahr/seit zwei Jahren/schon lange zusammen.
  We’ve been together for a year/for two years/for a long time.
• Wir leben zusammen.
  We live together.
• Wir sind noch nicht verheiratet.
  We’re not married yet.
• Wir wollen heiraten, aber wir sind noch nicht soweit.
  We want to get married, but we’re not ready.

Willst du meine Frau/mein Mann werden? Will you marry me?

If you decide that you want to get married, you might want to say:

• Lass uns heiraten.
  Let’s get married.
• Wir sind verlobt.
  We’re engaged.
• Das ist mein Verlobungsring.
  This is my engagement ring.
• Das ist mein Verlobter/meine Verlobte.
  This is my fiancé / fiancée.
• Wir machen Pläne für unsere Hochzeit.
  We’re planning our wedding.
• Unsere Hochzeitsfeier wird einfach und im kleinen Kreis sein.
  Our wedding will be simple and small.
• Die Braut sieht sehr schön aus.
  The bride is beautiful.
• Der Bräutigam sieht gut aus.
  The groom is handsome.
• Die Hochzeitsfeier war wunderschön.
  The wedding was beautiful.
• Das ist mein Mann.
  This is my husband.
• Das ist meine Frau.
  This is my wife.
• Wie lange seid ihr verheiratet?
  How long have you been married?
• Heute ist unser Hochzeitstag.
  Today is our wedding anniversary.

Wir sind nicht mehr zusammen. We’re not together anymore.

Hopefully your relationship is long and strong and full of happiness. But, sometimes things just don’t work out.

• Sie sind nicht glücklich zusammen.
  They’re not happy together.
• Sie streiten sich dauernd.
  They argue all the time.
• Sie haben einen Riesenstreit.
  They’re having a big fight.
• Er hat sie betrogen.
  He cheated on her.
• Sie hat ihn betrogen.
  She cheated on him.
• Er/sie hat eine Affäre.
  He/She is having an affair.
• Ich will mit dir Schluss machen.
  I want to break up with you.
• Ich will die Scheidung.
  I want to get a divorce.
• Sie haben Schluss gemacht.
  They broke up.
• Sie haben sich scheiden lassen.
  They got divorced.

Alles Liebe zum Valentinstag. Happy Valentine’s Day

For now, though, let’s just focus on the positive.

• Die Blumen hier sind für dich.
  These flowers are for you.
• Die Pralinen hier sind für dich.
  These chocolates are for you.
• Lass uns ganz romantisch zum Abendessen ausgehen.
  Let’s have a romantic dinner.
• Du bedeutest mir sehr viel.
  You’re very important to me.
• Ich möchte mein Leben mit dir verbringen.
  I want to spend my life with you.
• Ich denke ständig an dich.
  I think about you all the time.
