In this post we’ll take a look at vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about one of the most important rooms in the house. We’re not talking about the kitchen, but you can check that out here. We mean das Badezimmer, -Ø / das Bad, -¨er the bathroom.

Wo sind die Toiletten? Where is the toilet?

If you’re visiting a city and doing a lot of sightseeing, chances are you’re going to need to use the toilet at some point. Which means you’ll need to know: öffentliche Toilette(n) public toilet; das Urinbecken, -Ø urinal; die Herrentoilette(n) men’s room; die Damentoilette(n) ladies’ room.

• Gibt es eine öffentliche Toilette in der Nähe?
  Is there a public toilet nearby?
• Wo ist die Herrentoilette/Damentoilette?
  Where’s the men’s room/ladies’ room?
• Im Park gibt es automatische, selbstreinigende öffentliche Toiletten.
  There are automatic, self-cleaning public toilets in the park.
• Ist die öffentliche Toilette umsonst oder muss ich dafür bezahlen?
  Is the public toilet free or do I have to pay?
• Zahlen Sie bitte den Toilettenwart/die Toilettenwartin.
  Please pay the attendant.
• Die Toilette ist besetzt.
  The toilet is occupied.
• Die Toilette ist außer Betrieb.
  The toilet is out of service.
• Die Toilette wird gereinigt.
  The toilet is being cleaned.
• Beim Ausgang gibt es Toiletten/Urinbecken.
  There are toilets/urinals next to the exit.

Ich dusche jeden Morgen. I take a shower every morning.

Let’s start with some of the basics. In most bathrooms, you’ll find: die Dusche, -n the shower, der Spülstein, -e the sink, die (Bade)wanne, -n the bathtub, die Toilette, -n / das Klo, -s the toilet, das Toilettenpapier / Klopapier toilet paper, der Spiegel, -Ø the mirror, der Spiegelschrank, -¨e the vanity/medicine cabinet, das Badetuch, -¨er the bath towel, das Handtuch, -¨er the hand towel, die Handtuchablage, -n the towel rack.

• Ich dusche.
  I’m taking a shower.
• Ich bin schmutzig / verschwitzt. Ich muss duschen.
  I’m dirty/sweaty. I need to take a shower.
• Ich bade.
  I’m taking a bath.

• Ich muss mir das Gesicht waschen.
  I need to wash my face.
• Das Klo ist neben der Badewanne.
  The toilet is next to the bathtub.
• Der Spülstein im Badezimmer ist klein.
  The bathroom sink is small.
• Über dem Spülstein ist ein Spiegel.
  There’s a mirror above the sink.
• Das Aspirin ist im Spiegelschrank.
  The aspirin is in the medicine cabinet.
• Auf der Handtuchablage hängt ein frisches Handtuch.
  A clean towel is hanging on the towel rack.
• Mach bitte den Klodeckel runter.
  Please close the toilet seat.

Ich wasche mir (gerade) die Hände. I’m washing my hands.

A lot of what we do in the bathroom is related to washing and getting clean: die Seife, -n soap, das Shampoo, -s shampoo, der Conditioner, -Ø conditioner, das Deo, -s deodorant, die Zahnpasta, -en toothpaste, die Zahnbürste, -n toothbrush, der Rasierer, -Ø razor, die Rasiercreme, -s shaving cream, die Zahnseide dental floss, die Feuchtigkeitscreme, -s moisturizer/moisturizing cream, die (Haar)bürste, -n (hair)brush, der Kamm, -¨e comb, der Föhn, -e blow dryer, die Pinzette, -n tweezers, der Nagelknipser, -Ø toenail clipper.

• Ich muss mir die Hände waschen.
  I need to wash my hands.
• Wo ist die Seife?
  Where’s the soap?
• Ich putze mir jeden Abend die Zähne und benutze Zahnseide.
  I brush and floss my teeth every night.
• Wir brauchen mehr Zahnpasta.
  We need more toothpaste.
• Meine Zahnbürste ist blau, und deine ist weiß.
  My toothbrush is blue, and your toothbrush is white.
• Ich bürste/kämme mir die Haare vor dem Spiegel.
  I brush/comb my hair in front of the mirror.
• Die Kämme und Bürsten sind in der Schublade neben dem Spülstein.
  The combs and brushes are in the drawer next to the sink.
• Wir haben kein Shampoo mehr.
  We’re out of shampoo.
• Benutzt du Conditioner?
  Do you use conditioner?
• Ich rasiere mich unter der Dusche.
  I shave in the shower.
• Ich muss einen neuen Rasierer kaufen.
  I need to buy a new razor.
• Wo ist die Rasiercreme?
  Where’s the shaving cream?
• Diese Feuchtigkeitscreme riecht echt gut.
  This moisturizer smells really good.
• Ich benutze ein natürliches Deo.
  I use a natural deodorant.
• Wo ist die Pinzette?
  Where are the tweezers?

Parfüm und Makeup Perfume and Make Up

Some people’s morning bathroom routines include more than the basics. If you’re one of those people, you may want to know: das Parfüm, -s perfume, Kölnisch Wasser / Herrenparfüm cologne, das Makeup makeup, die Wimperntusche mascara, der Lidschatten eye shadow, der Eyeliner eyeliner, das Puder, -Ø powder, der Lippenstift, -e lipstick, der Nagellack nail polish, das Rouge blush/rouge, das Haargel, -s hair gel, das Haarspray, -s hairspray.

• Trägst du Makeup?
  Do you wear makeup?
• Ich schminke mich jeden Morgen.
  I put on makeup every morning.
• Ich mag dein (Herren)parfüm. Es riecht gut.
  I like your cologne/perfume. It smells nice.
• Ich lege Wimperntusche und Eyeliner auf.
  I’m putting on mascara and eyeliner.
• Welche Farben Nagellack haben Sie?
  What color nail polish do you have?
• Ich benutze jeden Tag Haargel.
  I use hair gel every day.
• Hast du Haarspray?
  Do you have hairspray?

Kann ich dein Badezimmer benutzen? Can I use your bathroom?

Of course, we also take care of more basic biological needs in the bathroom, most of which you probably don’t need to know how to talk about. But here are a few, because you never know!

• Ich muss zur Toilette.
  I have to go to the bathroom.
• Ich muss urinieren, Wasser lassen / meinen Darm entleeren.
  I have to urinate/defecate.
• Ich muss Pipi machen (Kinder), pinkeln / A-a machen (Kinder), kacken.
  I have to pee/poop.
• Wo ist das Bad / die Toilette?
  Where’s the bathroom?
• Das Bad ist den Flur runter hinten links/rechts.
  The bathroom is down the hall, to the left/right.
• Nicht reinkommen! Ich bin auf dem Klo!
  Don’t come in! I’m on the toilet!
• Es gibt kein Klopapier mehr!
  There’s no toilet paper left!
• Bitte zieh die Toilette ab.
  Please flush the toilet.
• Die Toilette ist verstopft. Hast du einen Pümpel?
  The toilet is clogged. Do you have a plunger?
