L’estate è arrivata! Summer is here! Talking about Summer in Italian
In this post you’ll learn vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about summer in Italian: l’estate (summer), il sole (the sun), and la spiaggia (the beach)
Il tempo è bello. The weather is beautiful.
For many people, the weather is the greatest thing about summer. So, let’s give you some expressions you can use.
- Fa bello oggi. / Il tempo è bello oggi.
It’s nice today. / The weather is beautiful today. - Il sole brilla.
The sun is shining. - Non ci sono nuvole in cielo.
There are no clouds in the sky.

- C’è una brezza piacevole.
There’s a nice breeze. - L’aria è fresca.
The air is fresh. - È un giorno perfetto.
It’s a perfect day.
Fa troppo caldo! It’s too hot!
Of course, not everyone loves summer weather. If you’re one of those people, you may want to say something like:
- Fa troppo caldo oggi.
It’s too hot today. - È molto umido.
It’s very humid. - Sto sudando.
I’m sweating. - Accendi l’aria condizionata!
Put the air-conditioner on!
Usciamo fuori! Let’s go outside!
No post about summer in Italian would be complete without vocabulary for enjoying the outdoors.Whether you like attività all’aria aperta e rilassanti relaxing outdoor activities or sport sports, there’s usually something for everyone in the summer.
- Andiamo a fare una passeggiata.
Let’s go for a walk. - Voglio andare al parco.
I want to go to the park. - Sediamoci a guardare il tramonto.
Let’s sit and watch the sunset. - Questo fine settimana faremo un picnic.
We’re having a picnic this weekend. - Andiamo a fare un giro in bicicletta.
Let’s go for a bike ride. - Andiamo a fare un’escursione in montagna.
Let’s go for a hike in the mountains. - Giochiamo a tennis.
Let’s play tennis. - Giochiamo a pallacanestro / a basket.
Let’s play basketball. - Giochiamo a calcio.
Let’s play soccer. - Giochiamo a baseball.
Let’s play baseball. - Voglio andare a fare una corsa.
I want to go for a run. - Stiamo andando a fare arrampicata sportiva.
We’re going rock climbing.
Andiamo in spiaggia. Let’s go to the beach.
Talking about the beach is a big part of talking about summer in Italian. If you’re going, you’ll probably want to know these words: un costume da bagno a swimsuit, un telo da mare a towel, occhiali da sole sunglasses, protezione solare sunscreen, un buon libro a good book, una tavola da surf a surfboard. Here are some things you may see at the beach: l’oceano the ocean, un’onda a wave, la sabbia sand, le conchiglie seashells, un faro a lighthouse, un gabbiano a seagull, un granchio a crab, una medusa a jellyfish, un pesce a fish, una stella marina a starfish, uno squalo a shark, un delfino a dolphin, una barca a boat, il lungomare the board walk, una gelateria an ice cream shop. Some other expressions that will come in handy are:
- Voglio sdraiarmi al sole.
I want to lie in the sun. - Andiamo a nuotare.
Let’s go swimming. - Mi sto abbronzando.
I’m getting a suntan. - Mi sono scottato (m) / scottata (f).
I got a sun burn. - Costruiamo un castello di sabbia.
Let’s build a sandcastle. - Giochiamo con le onde.
Let’s play in the waves. - Cerchiamo le conchiglie.
Let’s look for seashells. - Voglio un gelato.
I want ice cream.
Una tranquilla notte d’estate A Quiet Summer Night
In estate, il sole tramonta tardi. The sun sets late in the summer, but there’s nothing like a nice summer night, whether you’re having drinks outside with your friends, or you’re just sitting and listening to nature.
- Sediamoci all’aperto.
Let’s sit outside. - La notte è fresca.
The night is cool. - Sento i grilli.
I hear crickets. - Vedo le lucciole.
I see lightning bugs. - La brezza soffia tra gli alberi.
The breeze is blowing through the trees. - Sorge la luna.
The moon is rising. - Domani sarà un altra bella giornata.
Tomorrow will be another beautiful day.
