L’été est là ! Summer is here!
It’s June, which means that summer is right around the corner. So let’s talk about French vocabulary that will come in handy when talking about l’été summer, la plage the beach, and des activités en plein air outdoor activities.
Il fait un temps magnifique. The weather is beautiful.
For many people, the weather is the greatest thing about summer. So, let’s give you some expressions you can use.
- Il fait un temps magnifique aujourd’hui.
The weather is beautiful today. - Le soleil brille.
The sun is shining. - Il n’y a pas de nuages dans le ciel.
There are no clouds in the sky. - Il y a une bonne petite brise.
There’s a nice breeze. - L’air est frais.
The air is fresh. - C’est une journée splendide.
It’s a perfect day.
Il fait trop chaud ! It’s too hot!
Of course, not everyone loves summer weather. If you’re one of those people, you may want to say something like:
- Il fait trop chaud aujourd’hui !
It’s too hot today. - Il fait très humide.
It’s very humid. - Je transpire.
I’m sweating. - Mets la climatisation !
Put the air-conditioner on!
Sortons dehors ! Let’s go outside!
When the weather is nice in the summer, you’ll hopefully have a chance to take advantage of it and get outside. Whether you like des activités de détentes en plein air relaxing outdoor activities or les sports sports, there’s usually something for everyone in the summer.

I want to go for a run. - Nous allons faire de l’escalade.
We’re going rock climbing.
Allons à la plage. Let’s go to the beach.
The beach is a favorite summer destination. If you’re going, you’ll probably want to know these words: un maillot de bain a swimsuit, une serviette a towel, des lunettes de soleil sunglasses, de la crème solaire sunscreen, un bon livre a good book, une planche de surf a surfboard. Here are some things you may see at the beach: l’océan the ocean, une vague a wave, du sable sand, des coquillages seashells, un phare a light house, une mouette a seagull, un crabe a crab, une méduse a jellyfish, un poisson a fish, une étoile de mer a starfish, un requin a shark, un dauphin a dolphin, un bateau a boat, la promenade en bois the boardwalk, un magasin de glaces an ice cream shop. Some other expressions that will come in handy are:

I want to lie in the sun. - Allons nager.
Let’s go swimming. - Je bronze.
I’m getting a suntan. - J’ai pris un coup de soleil.
I got a sun burn. - Faisons un château de sable.
Let’s build a sand castle. - Allons jouer dans les vagues.
Let’s play in the waves. - Allons chercher des coquillages.
Let’s go look for seashells. - J’ai envie d’une glace.
I feel like an ice cream.
Une Calme Nuit d’Été A Quiet Summer Night
Le soleil se couche tard en été The sun sets late in the summer, but there’s nothing like a nice summer night, whether you’re having drinks outside with your friends, or you’re just sitting and listening to nature.
- Allons nous asseoir dehors.
Let’s sit outside. - La nuit est fraîche.
The night is cool. - J’entends les grillons.
I hear crickets. - Je vois des lucioles.
I see lightning bugs. - La brise souffle dans les arbres.
The breeze is blowing through the trees. - La lune se lève.
The moon is rising. - Demain sera une autre belle journée.
Tomorrow will be another beautiful day.
