In this post we’re going to look at French vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about computers, emails, social media, and the internet.
Mon ordinateur My Computer
Let’s start with some basic vocabulary that will help you talk about computer hardware: un ordinateur/ordi (fam.) (a computer), un ordinateur portable (a laptop), un ordinateur de bureau (a desktop), un écran (a screen), un clavier (a keyboard), une souris (a mouse), un tapis de souris (a mouse pad), une imprimante (a printer), une batterie (a battery), un cordon d’alimentation (a power cord), une webcam (a webcam), un micro(phone) (a microphone), un casque micro/micro-casque (a headset), un téléphone/mobile/portable (a cell phone), un smartphone (a smartphone), une tablette (a tablet). Remember that une batterie is a battery for a phone or computer. For more general batteries, use une pile.
- J’ai besoin d’acheter un nouvel ordinateur.
I need to buy a new computer. - Avez-vous un ordinateur portable ou de bureau ?
Do you have a laptop or a desktop? - Mon écran est fêlé/fissuré.
My screen is cracked.
- Mon clavier est cassé.
My keyboard is broken. - Je dois recharger mon ordinateur portable/ téléphone.
I have to recharge my laptop/phone. - J’ai besoin d’une nouvelle batterie pour ma souris.
I need a new battery for my mouse. - Ma webcam est allumée/éteinte.
My webcam is on/off. - Puis-je emprunter un casque-micro ma réunion/ visio(conférence) ?
Can I borrow a headset for my meeting/videoconference? - Je n’utilise pas d’ordinateur. Je peux tout faire sur ma tablette.
I don’t use a computer. I can do everything on my tablet.
Mail Email
Now let’s look at some vocabulary that you can use to talk about email: un mail/courriel (an email), envoyer un mail (to send an email), recevoir un mail (to get/receive an email), une pièce jointe (attachment), joindre/attacher une photo/un fichier (to attach a photo/file), répondre à un mail (to reply to an email), répondre à tous (to reply all), transférer/faire suivre/transmettre un mail (to forward an email).
- J’ai besoin de/Je dois regarder mes mails.
I need to check my email. - Quelle est ton adresse mail ?
What’s your email address? - J’écris un mail à mon ami(e)/patron/collègue.
I’m writing an email to my friend/boss/colleague. - Je reçois trop de mails.
I get too many emails. - J’ai oublié la pièce jointe.
I forgot the attachment. - Veuillez répondre à tous.
Please reply all. - Veuillez répondre à moi seulement.
Please reply just to me. - Pouvez-vous me transférer le mail ?
Could you forward the email to me?
Textos/SMS et Applications (Applis)Text Messages and Apps
If you’re sending a text message instead of an email, you’ll need to know: un texto/SMS (a text), un message (a message), envoyer un texto/SMS (to send a text), recevoir un texto/SMS (to get/receive a text), répondre à un texto/SMS (to answer a text), un message groupé (to send a group text), une appli(cation) (an app), télécharger une appli (to download an app), installer/désinstaller une mise à jour (to install/uninstall an app), mettre à jour une appli (to update an app), supprimer une appli (to delete an app).
- Je reçois un texto/message.
I’m getting a text/message. - Je vais t’envoyer un texto.
I’ll send you a text. - Envoie-moi l’adresse par texto, s’il te plaît.
Text me the address, please. - J’écris un texto à mon (petit) ami/ma petite amie.
I’m writing a text to my boyfriend/girlfriend. - J’ai envoyé un message au groupe.
I sent a message to the group. - N’envoie pas de textos en conduisant !
Don’t send texts while you’re driving! - Je n’ai pas reçu ton texto, je n’avais pas de réseau/je ne captais pas. (fam.)
I didn’t get your text, I had no signal. - Tu utilises WhatsApp ou une autre appli(cation) de messagerie ?
Do you use WhatsApp or another messaging app? - C’est une super appli, mais elle n’est pas gratuite.
This is a great app, but it’s not free. - J’ai supprimé cette application car je ne l’utilise jamais.
I deleted that app because I never use it. - Cette application a fait planter mon téléphone.
This app made my phone crash. - J’ai trop d’applis sur mon mobile/ma tablette.
I have too many apps on my phone/tablet.
L’internet The Internet
Here’s some vocabulary that will help you talk about the most common things that you do online: internet à haut débit (high speed internet), un site web (website), une page web (webpage), un lien (link), une URL (URL), un nagivateur (browser), un moteur de recherche (search engine), aller sur internet (to go online), mettre en ligne/télécharger (to upload), télécharger (to download), un routeur (router), un modem (modem), le wifi (WiFi), se connecter (to log in), se déconnecter (to log off).
- Je lis beaucoup de blogs/journaux/articles en ligne.
I read a lot of blogs/newspapers/articles online. - Je passe beaucoup de temps en ligne.
I spend a lot of time online. - J’ai un abonnement numérique/en ligne.
I have a digital/online subscription. - J’ai oublié mon mot de passe.
I forgot my password. - Je mets en ligne/télécharge un fichier/mon CV.
I’m uploading a file/my CV. - Je suis en train de télécharger une chanson/photo.
I’m downloading a song/photo. - Je n’arrive pas à me connecter, je dois redémarrer mon routeur.
I can’t get online, I need to restart my router. - J’ai un appel vidéo dans cinq minutes.
I have a video call in five minutes. - Je peux vous entendre, mais la vidéo est figée.
I can hear you, but the video is frozen. - Dois-je m’inscrire à la réunion ?
Do I need to sign in to the meeting? - Je vais me déconnecter et recommencer la réunion.
I’ll log off and restart the meeting. - J’ai besoin d’une bon fournisseur d’accès internet parce que je travaille à distance.
I need good internet service because I work remotely. - Quel est votre mot de passe wifi ?
What’s your WiFi password? - Avez-vous un site web ? Quelle est l’URL ?
Do you have a website? What’s the URL?
Les réseaux sociaux Social media
Of course, if you’re talking about the internet you may want to talk about social media: utiliser les médias sociaux (to use social media), être sur Facebook/Twitter (to be on Facebook/Twitter), avoir un compte sur Instagram/LinkedIn (to have an account on Instagram/LinkedIn), suivre un compte (to follow an account), aimer/liker un post (to like a post), laisser/mettre un commentaire (to leave a comment), répondre à un commentaire (to reply to a comment), poster une photo (to post a photo), supprimer un compte (to delete an account).

Why did you post that? - Je regrette d’avoir tweeté ça.
I wish I hadn’t tweeted that. / I regret tweeting that. - Il/elle a supprimé le tweet.
He/She deleted the tweet. - Tu as beaucoup d’amis sur Facebook !
You have a lot of Facebook friends! - Il/Elle m’a envoyé une demande d’ami.
He/She sent me a friend request. - Tu ne devrais pas rentrer dans des débats avec des inconnus sur les réseaux sociaux.
You shouldn’t get into debates with strangers on social media. - Je déteste les réseaux sociaux. Je supprime tous mes comptes !
I hate social media. I’m deleting all of my accounts!
