Learn basic French in this 20-lesson online course, including practice exercises and tons of audio. In this gentle and friendly course, you’ll learn all the vocabulary and basic grammar you need to get by in typical every-day situations, and you’ll sharpen your pronunciation and listening comprehension. Each lesson is short and simple, with easy explanations, lots of audio, practical examples, and plenty of practice quizzes. Check out the sample lessons to try it out before you enroll!

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • Lesson 1: Ça va ? How are you? Greetings, courtesy expressions, formal vous and casual tu, and an introduction a few key basic grammar concepts.
  • Lesson 2: Je ne comprends pas. I don’t understand. Survival expressions, introduction to verb forms.
  • Lesson 3: D’où es-tu ? Where are you from? The verb être (to be); subject pronouns je, tu, il, elle, on, nous, vous, ils, elles; nationalities, countries, venir de (to come from), de (of/from) and the contractions du and des. Using nationalities will introduce you to adjective agreement.
  • Lesson 4: Comment ça se dit ? How do you say that? French spelling and pronunciation.
  • Lesson 5: Qu’est-ce que c’est ? What is that? Basic objects, c’est… it’s…, questions and answers with oui (yes) and non (no) / ne… pas (not), gender and articles un, une, le, la, l’, aimer (to like), du, de la, de l’ (some).
  • Lesson 6: Combien ? How many? Numbers, plurals, les (the) and des (some), expressions with numbers.
  • Lesson 7: J’ai faim. I’m hungry. The verb avoir (to have), negatives with pas de, common expressions with avoir, quantity expressions beaucoup de (many, a lot of), peu de (few), plus de (more), assez de (enough), trop de (too many).
  • Lesson 8: Ma famille. My family. Vocabulary and expressions related to the family, possessives mon/ma/mes (my), ton/ta/tes (your), and so on.
