For many people, das Wetter (the weather) is the greatest thing about summer. So, let’s give you some expressions you can use.

• Das Wetter ist heute schön.
  The weather is beautiful today.
• Die Sonne scheint.
  The sun is shining.
• Es ist kein Wölkchen am Himmel.
  There are no clouds in the sky.

• Es weht eine angenehme Brise.
  There’s a nice breeze.
• Die Luft ist frisch.
  The air is fresh.
• Es ist ein perfekter Tag.
  It’s a perfect day.

Es ist zu heiß! It’s too hot!

Of course, not everyone loves summer weather. If you’re one of those people, you may want to say something like:

• Heute ist es zu heiß.
  It’s too hot today.
• Es ist sehr schwül.
  It’s very humid.
• Ich schwitze.
  I’m sweating.
• Mach die Klimaanlage an!
  Put the air-conditioner on!

• Ich möchte in den Park gehen.
  I want to go to the park.
• Lasst uns sitzen und den Sonnenuntergang beobachten.
  Let’s sit and watch the sunset.
• Dieses Wochenende machen wir ein Picknick.
  We’re having a picnic this weekend.
• Lasst uns Fahrrad fahren gehen.
  Let’s go for a bike ride.

  Let’s go for a hike in the mountains.

Talking about the beach is a big part of talking about summer in German. If you’re going, you’ll probably want to know these words: der Badeanzug, -¨e swimsuit, das Handtuch, -¨er towel, die Sonnenbrille, -n sunglasses, die Sonnenschutzcreme sunscreen, ein gutes Buch, -¨er a good book, das Surfbrett, -er surfboard. Here are some things you may see at the beach: der Ozean, -e the ocean, die Welle, -n wave, der Sand sand, die Muschel, -n seashells, der Seestern starfish, der Leuchtturm, -¨e lighthouse, die Möwe, -n seagull, der Krebs, -e / die Krabbe, -n crab, die Qualle, -n jellyfish, der Fisch, e fish, der Hai, -e shark, der Delphin, -e dolphin, das Boot, -e boat, die Strandpromenade the boardwalk, die Eisdiele, -n ice cream shop.

Some other expressions that will come in handy are:

• Ich möchte in der Sonne liegen.
  I want to lie in the sun.
• Lasst uns schwimmen gehen.
  Let’s go swimming.
• Ich werde braun.
  I’m getting a suntan.
• Ich habe Sonnenbrand.
  I got a sunburn.
• Lasst uns eine Sandburg bauen.
  Let’s build a sandcastle.
• Lasst uns in den Wellen spielen.
  Let’s play in the waves.
• Lasst uns nach Muscheln suchen.
  Let’s look for seashells.
• Ich möchte Eis.
  I want ice cream.

Im Sommer geht die Sonne spät unter. The sun sets late in the summer, but there’s nothing like a nice summer night, whether you’re having drinks outside with your friends, or you’re just sitting and listening to nature.

  The night is cool.
• Ich höre Grillen.
  I hear crickets.
• Ich sehe Leuchtkäfer / Glühwürmchen.

  The moon is rising.
• Morgen wird wieder ein schöner Tag.
