It’s winter in the northern hemisphere, which means that in many places it’s very cold. In this post we’ll learn some vocabulary and expressions for talking about winter in Italian.
Fa freddo fuori It’s Cold Outside!
Let’s start with some basic expressions that will help you talk about cold winter weather.
- Fa freddo.
It’s cold. - È gelido!
It’s freezing! - Sta nevicando.
It’s snowing. - Sta grandinando.
It’s sleeting.
- Fa freddo ed è ventoso.
It’s cold and windy. - La neve è bellissima.
The snow is beautiful. - Questa settimana avremo una bufera di neve.
We’re going to have a blizzard this week. - Il lago è ghiacciato.
The lake is frozen. - La neve si sta sciogliendo.
The snow is melting. - Sto tremando!

Of course, winter isn’t all fun and games.
- Odio la neve.
I hate the snow. - Devo spalare il vialetto.
I have to shovel the driveway. - Le strade sono ghiacciate e pericolose.
The roads are icy and dangerous. - Sono scivolato/a sul marciapiede.
I slipped on the sidewalk. - Non mi piace il freddo!
I don’t like the cold! - Mi manca il sole.
I miss the sun. - Il clima invernale è deprimente.

If you have to go outside, you need to dress appropriately and indossare wear the right clothes: un cappotto invernale a winter coat, un cappello a hat, una sciarpa a scarf, guanti gloves, manopole mittens, stivali boots.
- Oggi ho bisogno di un cappello e dei guanti.
I need a hat and gloves today. - Questo cappotto non è abbastanza pesante!
This coat isn’t heavy enough! - Hai degli stivali impermeabili?
Do you have waterproof boots? - Indosso un maglione e un cappotto.

But inside, you can still sentire feel il calore warm and accogliente cozy. Puoi sederti accanto a un fuoco You can sit next to a fire, e magari goderti and maybe enjoy una tazza di tè a cup of tea or better yet, una tazza di cioccolata calda a cup of hot chocolate. Just get una bella coperta a nice blanket, maybe un buon libro a good book, and you’re ready to make the most out of the i giorni freddi cold days and le lunghe notti long nights. It’s only a few more months until the spring!
