Valentine’s Day is coming up, so let’s cover some Italian vocabulary and expressions to help you talk about all things love.

Mi ami? Do you love me?

Let’s start with some basics. If you’re talking to your significant other, you might want to use a pet name like tesoro / dolcezza sweetheart, amore mio my love, or piccolo/a baby.

• Ti amo.
  I love you.
• La amo.
  I love her.
• Lo amo.
  I love him.

• Questo è il mio ragazzo. / Questa è la mia ragazza.
  This is my boyfriend/girlfriend.
• Questo è mio marito / Questa è mia moglie.
  This is my husband/wife.
• Buon San Valentino!
  Happy Valentine’s Day!
• Buon Anniversario.
  Happy Anniversary.
• Mi manchi.
  I miss you.

Mi piace davvero tanto. I really like her.

If someone has caught your eye, you might want to say:

• Mi piace davvero tanto.
  I really like him/her.
• È davvero attraente.
  He/She is really good-looking.
• È bella.
  She’s beautiful.
• È bello.
  He’s handsome.
• È divertente.
  He/She is funny.
• È interessante.
  He/She is interesting.
• È intelligente.
  He/She is smart.

Posso invitarti a cena? Do you want to have dinner with me?

Maybe there’s a mutual attraction? One way to find out is to ask.

• Vuoi uscire con me?
  Do you want to go out with me?
• Vuoi prendere un caffè con me?
  Do you want to have coffee with me?
• Vuoi prendere qualcosa da bere insieme a me?
  Do you want to have drinks with me?
• Andiamo a cena insieme.
  Let’s have dinner together.
• È stato davvero un piacere conoscerti.
  I really enjoyed getting to know you.
• Vuoi uscire di nuovo qualche volta?
  Do you want to go out again some time?
• Vorrei rivederti.
  I want to see you again.
• Vorrei baciarti.
  I want to kiss you.

Stiamo insieme da un anno. We’ve been together for a year.

If you’re in a long-term relationship, you might want to know how to say:

• Da quanto tempo state insieme?
  How long have you two been together?
• Come vi siete conosciuti?
  How did you two meet?
• Ci siamo conosciuti a scuola / a lavoro.
  We met at work/school.
• Ci siamo conosciuti a una festa / a un pub.
  We met at a party/bar.
• Ci siamo conosciuti online.
  We met online.
• Ci siamo conosciuti tramite amici / i nostri genitori.
  Our friends/parents introduced us.
• Stiamo insieme da un anno / due anni / tanto tempo.
  We’ve been together for a year/two years/a long time.
• Conviviamo.
  We live together.
• Ancora non siamo sposati.
  We’re not married yet.
• Vogliamo sposarci, ma non siamo ancora pronti.
  We want to get married, but we’re not ready.

Vuoi sposarmi? Will you marry me?

If you decide that you want to get married, you might want to say:

• Sposiamoci.
  Let’s get married.
• Siamo fidanzati ufficialmente.
  We’re engaged.
• Questo è il mio anello di fidanzamento.
  This is my engagement ring.
• Questo è il mio fidanzato / Questa è la mia fidanzata.
  This is my fiancé / fiancée.
• Stiamo organizzando il nostro matrimonio.
  We’re planning our wedding.
• Il nostro matrimonio sarà semplice e con poche persone.
  Our wedding will be simple and small.
• La sposa è bellissima.
  The bride is beautiful.
• Lo sposo è bellissimo.
  The groom is handsome.
• È stato un bel matrimonio.
  The wedding was beautiful.
• Questo è mio marito.
  This is my husband.
• Questa è mia moglie.
  This is my wife.
• Da quanto tempo siete sposati?
  How long have you been married?
• Oggi è il nostro anniversario di matrimonio.
  Today is our wedding anniversary.

Non stiamo più insieme. We’re not together anymore.

Hopefully your relationship is long and strong and full of happiness. But, sometimes things just don’t work out.

• Non sono felici insieme.
  They’re not happy together.
• Litigano sempre.
  They argue all the time.
• Stanno avendo dei grandi problemi.
  They’re having a big fight.
• Lui l’ha tradita.
  He cheated on her.
• Lei l’ha tradito.
  She cheated on him.
• Lui/Lei ha l’amante.
  He/She is having an affair.
• Ho intenzione di lasciarti.
  I want to break up with you.
• Voglio il divorzio.
  I want to get a divorce.
• Si sono lasciati.
  They broke up.
• Hanno divorziato.
  They got divorced.

Buon San Valentino! Happy Valentine’s Day

For now, though, let’s just focus on the positive.

• Ecco, questi fiori sono per te.
  These flowers are for you.
• Ecco, questi cioccolatini sono per te.
  These chocolates are for you.
• Facciamo una cena romantica.
  Let’s have a romantic dinner.
• Tu per me sei molto importante.
  You’re very important to me.
• Voglio passare tutta la mia vita insieme a te.
  I want to spend my life with you.
• Ti penso sempre.
  I think about you all the time.
