What is the Language Garage?
We’re a partnership of linguists, language teachers, language content developers, and language lovers. Most of us have worked in academia or for major publishers or language training corporations, and while we think all of that is great, it sometimes puts a lot of obstacles between a learner and a language. When we set out to create the Language Garage in 2017, we focused on a few specific points to overcome those obstacles.
- Keep prices low. We don’t have big overhead or other expenses. so we can keep our prices affordable.
- Language coaching. Everyone learns languages differently, and our goal is to help you find the way you learn best. Our language coaches are here to support your program and help you succeed.
- Focus on teaching languages. We don’t spend time or resources on anything that isn’t directly related to teaching languages. We’re not a tech company or a publisher, we teach languages.
- Respect our teachers. Our teachers get about three quarters of what our students pay, or more. Language teaching is a skill that requires a lot of experience and training, and that deserves respectable pay.
- Teach our students. We don’t have big marketing budgets or sales pitches or phony gimmicks. We just want our students to learn and to enjoy learning.
What do we offer?
The Language Garage offers a few different ways to learn languages.
- Live Instruction. Our teachers offer private, pair, and small group online lessons via apps like Zoom or Google Meet.
- Free Resources. We have a wide range of free learning content for students who want to supplement their lessons, whether those lessons are with us or not.
- Self-Study. We offer plenty of self-study materials, from free mini-courses to inexpensive online courses.
Why is the Language Garage different?
We’re different from other language schools because we’re a partnership. Our instructors receive about three quarters of what our students pay. The rest goes toward shared expenses like keeping the site up and developing more free learning content. If you opt for small group instruction, we keep the groups SMALL, no more than five students, usually just three or four, sometimes even two, so you receive plenty of high quality individual attention.
We’re different from language apps because we offer live instruction, actual human interaction with a trained and caring professional language instructor. Apps are great supplements, and they’re a lot of fun, but they don’t allow you to use language naturally, as a tool for communication.
We’re different from many language content developers because we only focus on practical learning materials, no flashy designs or packaging or marketing.
How do we teach languages?
We don’t have a specific proprietary method, because people learn languages differently. And frankly, those methods are just marketing gimmicks. We teach all relevant aspects of a language, based on the individual needs of the student. That’s practical vocabulary, essential grammar made easy, and lots of speaking, speaking, speaking. If you have a special need for reading or writing, we include that in your program.
How can I learn more about your programs?
We don’t expect you to enroll without getting to know us better! If you’re interested in taking private lessons with us, schedule a consultation and free trial on the language page that you’re interested in. If you’re interested in a small group online class, sign up for a free demo. It’s completely free, with no obligation or risk whatsoever. Come and see for yourself whether there’s a good fit!
