In this post we’ll look at some Russian vocabulary and expressions for an important part of everyday life: кухня (f) the kitchen. Вы готовите? Do you cook? No matter how you answer, you probably spend a decent amount of time in the kitchen, so let’s dig in.

Тарелки, чашки, вилки Plate, Cups, Forks

Let’s start with the things you use to eat. Of course the basics are: тарелка (f) plate, глубокая тарелка/миска (f) bowl, нож (m) knife, ложка (f) spoon, вилка (f) fork, палочки для еды chopsticks, чашка (f) cup, стакан (m) glass, салфетка (f) napkin.

• Где вилки, ножи и ложки?
  Where are the forks, knives, and spoons?
• Вилки, ножи и ложки в ящике.
  The forks, knives, and spoons are in the drawer.
• Чистые стаканы – в шкафу.
  The clean glasses are in the cabinet.

• Кофейные чашки – на полочке.
  The coffee cups are on the shelf. 
• Я разбил(а) винный бокал.
  I broke a wine glass.
• Вы используете/Ты используешь деревянные или металлические палочки для еды?
  Do you use wooden or metal chopsticks?
• Дай(те) салфетку пожалуйста./ Можно салфетку?
  Could I have a napkin, please?
• У вас/тебя есть глубокие тарелки для супа большего размера?
  Do you have bigger bowls for the soup?
• Пожалуйста поставь(те) чистые тарелки в шкаф.
  Please put the clean plates in the cabinet.

Кухонные приборы Kitchen Appliances

Even if you don’t have a lot of gadgets in your kitchen, you’ve probably got most of these: холодильник (m) a refrigerator, плита/плитка (f) a stove/cooker, духовка (f) an oven, микроволновая печь (f) a microwave oven, тостер (m) a toaster, раковина (f) a sink, посудомоечная машина (f) a dishwasher.

• Молоко в холодильнике.
  The milk is in the refrigerator.
• Закрой(те) пожалуйста дверцу холодильника!
  Close the refrigerator door please!
• Я готовлю суп на плите.
  I cook soup on the stove.
• Я пеку пирожки, торты и хлеб в духовке. 
  I bake cakes and bread in the oven. 
• Я разогреваю остатки еды в микроволновке.
  I reheat left-overs in the microwave. 
• Я делаю тост при помощи тостера.
  I make toast in the toaster. 
• Грязная посуда в раковине.
  The dirty dishes are in the sink.
• Мне надо убрать посуду из посудомоечной машины.
  I need to empty the dishwasher. 

And depending on where you live and what you like to eat, there’s also: рисоварка (f) a rice maker, кофеварка (f) a coffee maker, электрический чайник (m) an electric kettle, мультиварка (f) a slow cooker, воздушная жаровня/фритюрница (f) an air fryer, хлебопечка (f) a bread machine, мороженица (f) an ice-cream maker, фритюрница (f) a deep fryer. 

• Я всегда использую рисоварку. Я никогда не готовлю рис на плите. 
  I always use a rice cooker. I never cook rice on the stove.
• Нам нужна новая кофеварка.
  We need a new coffee maker.
• Я кипячу воду в электрическом чайнике. 
  I boil water in the electric kettle.
• Вы часто используете/ ты часто используешь вашу/твою мультиварку?
  Do you use your slow cooker often?
• Воздушная жаровня/фритюрница использует немного масла. 
  Air friers don’t use a lot of oil.
• Я делаю хлеб в хлебопечке. 
  I make bread in the bread maker. 
• Мне подарили мороженицу на день рождения. 
  I got an ice cream maker for my birthday. 
• Фритюрницы используют много масла. 
  Deep friers use a lot of oil .

Разделочные доски и миски для смешивания Cutting boards and Mixing Bowls

No matter how much you cook, you probably have at least a few of these: разделочная доска (f) a cutting board, набор ножей a set of knives, миска для смешивания a mixing bowl, деревянная ложка (f) a wooden spoon, половник (m) a ladle, кухонный комбайн/процессер (m) a food processor, электрический миксер (m) an electric mixer, котелок/вок (m) a wok, противень (m) a baking sheet, противень (m)/форма для запекания (f) a baking pan, сковорода/сковородка (f) a frying pan, кастрюля (f) a pot. 

• Я режу овощи на разделочной доске.
  I cut vegetables on a cutting board. 
• На столе нет места. 
  There’s no space on the counter. 
• У вас/тебя есть набор острых ножей?
  Do you have a set of sharp knives?
• Я смешиваю ингредиенты в миске для смешивания.
  I mix ingredients in a mixing bowl.
• Я мешаю суп деревянной ложкой.
  I stir soup with a wooden spoon.
• Я использую половник, когда разливаю суп в тарелки. 
  I use a ladle to serve soup. 
• Кухонные комбайны быстры и удобны.
  Food processors are fast and convenient. 
• Вы часто используете/ты часто используешь электрический миксер?
  Do you use the electric mixer often?
• Печенья на противне.
  The cookies are on the baking sheet.
• Я готовлю рыбу на противне.
  I cook fish in a baking pan. 
• Я часто использую вок.
  I use the wok very often.
• Я готовлю яйца в сковороде. 
  I cook eggs in a frying pan.
• У вас/тебя есть большая кастрюля для супа?
  Do you have a large pot for the soup?

Я Готовлю Ужин. I’m Making Dinner.

Контейнеры, банки и сумки/пакеты Containers, Jars, and Bags

Different foods are stored in different types of containers, so may want to say:

• коробка пасты, печений, хлопьев 
  a box of pasta/cookies/cereal
• мешок картошки, пакет замороженных овощей
  a bag of potatoes/frozen vegetables
• бутылка воды, вина
  a bottle of water/wine
• пакет молока, сока
  a carton of milk/juice
• (консервная) банка бобовых, тунца, супа
  a can of beans/tuna/soup
• банка оливок, солений, консервированных фруктов
  a jar of olives/pickles/fruit preserves
• контейнер/банка майонеза, кетчупа
  a container of ketchup/mayonnaise
• упаковка цыплёнка, тофу
  a package of chicken/tofu

Кухня чистая! The kitchen is clean!

Even if you don’t use it much, the kitchen always seems to need cleaning. And there’s a whole set of vocabulary that you can use to talk about that: веник (m) a broom, швабра (f) a mop, спонж (m) a sponge, средство для мытья посуды  dish detergent, кухонное полотенце (n) a dishtowel, спрей-очиститель (m) a spray cleaner, бумажное полотенце (n) a paper towel, ведро (n) a bucket, средство для мытья полов floor cleaner, мусорное ведро (n) trash can/bin. 

• Мне надо помыть посуду.
  I need to do the dishes.
• Нам надо купить средство для мытья посуды.
  We need to buy dish detergent. 
• Я использую спонж и кухонное полотенце, когда мою посуду. 
  I use a sponge and a dishtowel to do the dishes. 
• Я подметаю пол веником. 
  I sweep the floor with a broom.
• Я протираю пол шваброй, когда он грязный. 
  I mop the floor when it’s dirty. 
• Я протираю стол бумажным полотенцем и спрей-очистителем. 
  I wipe the counter with a paper towel and a spray cleaner. 
• Я смешиваю тёплую воду со средством для мытья пола в ведре. 
  I put floor cleaner and warm water in the bucket. 
• Мне надо вынести мусор.
  I need to take out the trash. 
• Мусорное ведро плохо пахнет. 
  The trashcan smells bad!
