In this post we’ll cover basic Russian vocabulary and expressions related to the weather.

Небо: The sky

Let’s start with some basic vocabulary.

• солнце (n) sun
• облако  (n) cloud
• небо (n) sky
• ветер (m) wind
• дождь (m) rain
• снег (m) snow
• гроза (f), буря (f) storm
• гром (m) thunder
• молния (f) lightning

Как погода? What’s the weather like?

Here are some basic expressions that you can use to describe typical weather.

• Какая сегодня погода/Какая погода в эти выходные?
  What’s the weather like today/this weekend?
• Прекрасный день.
  It’s a beautiful day.
• Солнечно.
  It’s sunny.
• Жарко.
  It’s hot.
• Холодно.
  It’s cold.
• Облачно.
  It’s cloudy.
• Ветренно.
  It’s windy.
• Идёт дождь.
  It’s raining.
• Идёт снег.
  It’s snowing.
• Гроза, буря.
  There’s a storm.
• Влажно.
  It’s humid.

Слишком жарко! It’s too hot!

Here are some expressions you can use to talk about the hot weather.

• Сегодня слишком жарко.
  It’s too hot today.
• Очень влажно.
  It’s very humid.
• Я взмок(ла).
  I’m sweating.
• Включи(те) кондиционер!
  Put the air-conditioner on!
• Я очень люблю тёплую погоду.
  I really like warm weather.

На Улице Холодно! It’s Cold Outside!

And here are some expressions that you can use to talk about the cold weather.

• Холодно.
  It’s cold.
• Морозит! / Подмораживает!
  It’s freezing!
• Идёт снег.
  It’s snowing.
• Идёт мокрый снег.
  It’s sleeting.
• На этой неделе у нас будет метель.
  We’re going to have a blizzard this week.
• Холодно и ветрено.
  It’s cold and windy.
• Меня колотит! / Я дрожу от холода!
  I’m shivering!
• Я очень люблю снег.
  I really like snow.
