In this post we’ll talk about vocabulary and expressions related to music: what you listen to, what you dance to, and what kind of musical instruments you may play.
この｛歌・曲｝が好きです。 Kono {uta/kyoku} ga suki desu. I love this song.
Let’s start with some of the basics. If you want to talk about music, you’ll want to know how to say: 歌 uta song, 歌手 kashu singer, バンド bando group/band, アルバム arubamu album, 歌詞 kashi lyrics, ラジオ rajio radio, ミュージックビデオ myūjikku bideo music video, 音楽を聞く ongaku o kiku to listen to music, 歌う utau to sing, 踊る odoru to dance.
- どのバンドが好きですか。
Dono bando ga suki desu ka.
What’s your favorite band? - どの歌手が好きですか。
Dono kashu ga suki desu ka.
Who’s your favorite singer? - いつも車の中で音楽を聞いています。
Itsumo kuruma no naka de ongaku o kīte imasu.
I always listen to music in the car.
- この曲が好き｛です・じゃありません｝。
Kono kyoku ga suki {desu/ja arimasen}.
I like/don’t like this song. - 音量を上げてください！この曲が大好きです。
Onryō o agete kudasai! Kono kyoku ga daisuki desu.
Turn the volume up! I love this song. - 音量を下げてください！音が大きすぎます。
Onryō o sagete kudasai! Oto ga ōkisugimasu.
Turn the volume down! The music is too loud. - この曲はノリがいいですね。
Kono kyoku wa nori ga ī desu ne.
This song has a great beat. - この曲がかかるといつも一緒に歌ってしまいます。
Kono kyoku ga kakaru to itsumo isshoni utatte shimaimasu.
I always sing along to this song. - この曲がかかるといつも踊ってしまいます。
Kono kyoku ga kakaru to itsumo odotte shimaimasu.
I always dance to this song. - この歌の歌詞がわかりません。
Kono uta no kashi ga wakarimasen.
I don’t know the lyrics to this song. - これは私が大好きなミュージックビデオです。
Kore wa watashi ga daisukina myūjikku bideo desu.
This is my favorite music video. - このバンドは新しいアルバムを出しました。とてもいいですよ。
Kono bando wa atarashī arubamu o dashimashita. Totemo ī desu yo.
This band just released a new album. It’s great. - スポティファイでランダムにかかる曲を聞くのが好きです。
Supotifai de randamu ni kakaru kyoku o kikuno ga suki desu.
I like to listen to random songs on Spotify. - 好きな曲を集めたプレイリストを作りました。

どんな音楽が好きですか。 Don’na ongaku ga suki desu ka. What kind of music do you like?
People have all sorts of different taste in music. What kind of music do you like? ポップミュージック poppu myūjikku pop music, ダンスミュージック dansu myūjikku dance music, ディスコ disuko disco, ヒップホップ hippuhoppu hip hop, K-pop K-poppu K-pop, J-pop J-poppu J-pop, ロック rokku rock, ハードロック hādo rokku hard rock, カントリー kantorī country music, エレクトロニカ erekutoronika electronic music, クラシック kurashikku classical music, オペラ opera opera, ジャズ jazu jazz, ブルース burūsu blues, レゲエ regē reggae, パンク panku punk rock, フォーク fōku folk music, アンビエント anbiento ambient music, ゴスペル gosuperu gospel music.
- ｛ロック・ジャズ・クラシック｝が好きです。
{Rokku/Jazu/Kurashikku} ga suki desu.
I prefer rock/jazz/classical music. - ｛ディスコ・ブルース・レゲエ｝は好きじゃありません。
{Disuko/Burūsu/Regē} wa suki ja arimasen.
I don’t like disco/blues/reggae. - 最近｛K-pop・カントリー｝が好きになりました。
Saikin {K-poppu/kantorī} ga suki ni narimashita.
I’m starting to get into K-pop/country music. - ｛フォーク・オペラ｝は全くダメです。
{Fōku/Opera} wa mattaku dame desu.
I can’t stand folk music/opera. - どんな音楽が好きですか。
Don’na ongaku ga suki desu ka.
What’s your favorite kind of music? - 私達は音楽の好みが違います。音楽について意見が一致することがありません。
Watashitachi wa ongaku no konomi ga chigaimasu. Ongaku ni tsuite iken ga icchi suru koto ga arimasen.
We have different musical tastes. We never agree on music. - 次の曲を選んでください。
Tsugi no kyoku o erande kudasai.
You can choose the next song.
楽器ができますか。 Gakki ga dekimasu ka. Do you play any instruments?
If you want to talk about music, it’s helpful to know how to say different instruments: ピアノ piano piano, ギター gitā guitar, エレキギター ereki gitā electric guitar, ドラム doramu drum, キーボード kībōdo keyboard, バイオリン baiorin violin, トランペット toranpetto trumpet, フルート furūto flute, クラリネット kurarinetto clarinet, サックス sakkusu saxophone, チェロ chero cello, チューバ chūba tuba, トロンボーン toronbōn trombone, オルガン orugan organ, アコーディオン akōdion accordion. You will also need to know the verb to play (a musical instrument). There are three Japanese verbs that you can use depending on the type of instrument. Use 弾く hiko for keyboards and string instruments (piano, keyboards, guitar, violin…) 吹く huku (to blow) for wind instruments (flute, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone..) and use 叩くtataku (to hit) for drums.

I took piano lessons when I was younger. - ギターを習いたいです。
Gitā o naraitai desu.
I want to learn how to play the guitar. - バイオリンが弾けますが、あまり上手じゃありません。
Baiorin ga hikemasuga, amari jōzu ja arimasen.
I play the violin, but not very well. - シャワーをしながら歌うのが好きです。
Shawā o shinagara utauno ga suki desu.
I like to sing in the shower. - 歌が上手ですね。いい声をしていますね。
Uta ga jōzu desu ne. Ī koe o shite imasu ne.
You sing really well. You have a great voice. - オーケストラでクラリネットを吹いています。
Ōkesutora de kurarinetto o fuite imasu.
He/She plays clarinet in an orchestra. - バンドでドラムをやっています。
Bando de doramu o yatte imasu.
He/She plays drums in a band. - お仕事でチェロを弾いていますか。それとも趣味で弾いていますか。
Oshigoto de chero o hīte imasu ka. Soretomo shumi de hīte imasu ka.
Do you play the cello professionally or as a hobby?
コンサートに行きましょう。 Konsāto ni ikimashō. Let’s go to a concert.
Music isn’t just for listening to at home, which brings us to: コンサート konsāto a concert, オーケストラ ōkesutora orchestra, カラオケ karaoke karaoke, DJdījē DJ, クラブ kurabu nightclub.

Konshūmatsu no konsāto no chiketto o kaimashita.
I bought tickets to a concert this weekend. - オーケストラの演奏を聞きに行くのが好きです。
Ōkesutora no ensō o kiki ni ikuno ga suki desu.
We love to go to the symphony. - ｛スローな・速い｝曲に合わせて踊るのが好きです。
{Surōna/Hayai} kyoku ni awasete odoruno ga suki desu.
I like to dance to slow/fast songs. - バンドの演奏を見るのが好きです。生演奏が好きなんです。
Bando no ensō o miruno ga suki desu. Nama ensō ga suki nan desu.
I like to see bands perform. I love live music. - 今週末にバーで私の友達のバンドが演奏します。
Konshūmatsu ni bā de watashi no tomodahi no bando ga ensō shimasu.
My friend’s band is playing at a bar this weekend. - クラブに行って一晩中踊りました。
Kurabu ni itte hitobanjū odorimashita.
We went to a nightclub and danced all night. - 私が大好きなDJです。
Watashi ga daisukina dījē desu.
He/She is my favorite DJ.
