In this post we’re going to look at Japanese vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about computers, emails, social media, and the internet.
私のパソコン Watashi no Pasokon My Computer
Let’s start with some basic vocabulary that will help you talk about computer hardware: パソコン pasokon (a computer), ノートパソコン nōto pasokon (a laptop), デスクトップパソコン desukutoppu pasokon (a desktop), スクリーン sukurīn (a screen), キーボード kībōdo (a keyboard), マウス mausu (a mouse), マウスパッド mausu paddo (a mouse pad), プリンター purintā (a printer), 電池、バッテリー denchi, batterī (a battery), 電源コードdengen kōdo (a power cord), ウェブカメラ webu kamera (a webcam), マイク maiku (a microphone), ヘッドセット heddosetto (a headset), スマートフォン、スマホ sumātofon, sumaho (a smartphone), タブレット taburetto (a tablet).
- 新しいパソコンを買わなければいけません。
Atarashī pasokon o kawanakereba ikemasen.
I need to buy a new computer. - ノートパソコンを持っていますか。それともデスクトップパソコンを持っていますか。
Nōto pasokon o motte imasu ka. Soretomo desukutoppu pasokon o motte imasu ka.
Do you have a laptop or a desktop? - 私のスクリーンにはヒビが入っています。
Watashi no sukurīn ni wa hibi ga haitte imasu.
My screen is cracked.
- 私のキーボードは壊れています。
Watashi no kībōdo wa kowarete imasu.
My keyboard is broken. - ｛ノートパソコン・電話｝を充電しなければいけません。
{Nōto pasokon/Denwa} o jūden shinakereba ikemasen.
I have to recharge my laptop/phone. - マウスの新しい電池が要ります。
Mausu no atarashī denchi ga irimasu.
I need a new battery for my mouse. - ウェブカメラが｛オン・オフ｝になっています。
Webu kamera ga {on/ofu} ni natte imasu.
My webcam is on/off. - 会議のためにヘッドセットを借りてもいいですか。
Kaigi no tame ni heddosetto o karite mo ii desu ka.
Can I borrow a headset for my meeting? - パソコンは使いません。タブレットで何でもできます。
Pasokon wa tsukaimasen. Taburetto de nandemo dekimasu.
I don’t use a computer. I can do everything on my tablet.
メール mēru Email
Now let’s look at some vocabulary that you can use to talk about email: メール、イーメール mēru, īmēru (an email), メールを｛する・送る｝ mēru o {suru/okuru} (to send an email), メールを受け取る、メールが来る mēru o uketoru, mēru ga kuru (to get/receive an email), 添付 tenpu (attachment), ｛写真・ファイル｝を添付する {shashin/fairu} o tenpu suru (to attach a photo/file), メールに返信する mēru ni henshin suru (to reply to an email), 全員に返信する zen’in ni henshin suru (to reply all), メールを転送する mēru o tensō suru (to forward an email).
- メールをチェックしなければいけません。
Mēru o chekku shinakereba ikemasen.
I need to check my email. - メールアドレスは何ですか。
Mēru adoresu wa nan desu ka.
What’s your email address? - ｛友達・上司・同僚｝にメールを書いています。
{Tomodachi/Jōshi/Dōryō} ni mēru o kaite imasu.
I’m writing an email to my friend/boss/colleague. - メールが来る量が多すぎます。
Mēru ga kuru ryō ga ōsugimasu.
I get too many emails. - 添付するのを忘れました。
Tenpu suruno o wasuremashita.
I forgot the attachment. - 全員に返信してください。
Zen’in ni henshin shite kudasai.
Please reply all. - 私だけに返信してください。
Watashi dake ni henshin shite kudasai.
Please reply just to me. - メールを転送してもらえますか。
Mēru o tensō shite moraemasu ka.
Could you forward the email to me?
メッセージとアプリ Messēji to Apuri Text Messages and Apps
If you’re sending a text message instead of an email, you’ll need to know: メール、メッセージ mēru, messēji (a text), メッセージ messēji (a message), メールを｛する・送る｝、メッセージを送る mēru o {suru/okuru }, messēji o okuru (to send a text), ｛メール・メッセージ｝を受け取る、｛メール・メッセージ｝が来る {mēru/messēji} o uketoru, {mēru/messēji} ga kuru (to get/receive a text), ｛メール・メッセージ｝に返信する {mēru/messēji} ni henshin suru (to answer a text), グループメールを｛する・送る｝、 グループメッセージを送る gurūpu mēru o {suru/okuru}, gurūpu messēji o okuru (to send a group text), アプリ apuri (an app),アプリをダウンロードする apuri o daunrōdo suru (to download an app), アプリをアップデートする apuri o appudēto suru (to update an app), アプリを削除する apuri o sakujo suru (to delete an app).
- ｛メール・メッセージ｝が来ます。
{Mēru/Messēji} ga kimasu.
I’m getting a text/message. - メールを｛します・送ります｝。
Mēru o {shimasu/okurimasu}.
I’ll send you a text. - 住所をメールで送ってください。
Jūsho o mēru de okutte kudasai.
Text me the address, please. - ｛彼氏・彼女｝に｛メール・メッセージ｝を書いています。
{Kareshi/Kanojo} ni {mēru/messēji} o kaite imasu.
I’m writing a text to my boyfriend/girlfriend. - グループに｛メール・メッセージ｝を送りました。
Gurūpu ni {mēru/messēji} o okurimashita.
I sent a message to the group. - 運転中にメールをしないでください！
Untenchū ni mēru o shinaide kudasai!
Don’t send texts while you’re driving! - 電波が入らないところにいたので、｛メール・メッセージ｝を受信できませんでした。
Denpa ga hairanai tokoro ni ita node {mēru/messēji} o jushin dekimasen deshita.
I didn’t get your text, I had no signal. - ワッツアップなどのメッセージアプリを使っていますか。
Wattsu appu nado no messēji apuri o tsukatte imasu ka.
Do you use WhatsApp or another messaging app? - これはいいアプリですが、無料じゃありません。
Kore wa ī apuri desu ga, muryō ja arimasen.
This is a great app, but it’s not free. - 全然使わないのでそのアプリは削除しました。
Zenzen tsukawanai node sono apuri wa sakujo shimashita.
I deleted that app because I never use it. - このアプリのせいで電話がクラッシュしました。
Kono apuri no sē de denwa ga kurasshu shimashita.
This app made my phone crash. - ｛電話・タブレット｝にアプリを入れ過ぎてしまいました。
{Denwa/Taburetto} ni apuri o iresugite shimaimashita.
I have too many apps on my phone/tablet.
インターネット intānetto The Internet
Here’s some vocabulary that will help you talk about the most common things that you do online: 高速インターネット kōsoku intānetto (high speed internet), ウェブサイト webusaito (website), ホームページ、ウェブページ hōmu pēji, webu pēji (webpage), リンクrinku (link), URL ū āru eru (URL), ブラウザ burauza (browser), サーチエンジン sāchi enjin (search engine), ネットを見る、ウェブサイトにアクセスする netto o miru, webusaito ni akusesu suru (to go online), アップロードする appurōdo suru (to upload), ダウンロードする daunrōdo suru (to download), ルーター rūtā (router), モデム modemu (modem), WiFi waifai (WiFi), ログインする rogu in suru (to log in), ログアウトする rogu auto suru (to log off).
- ネットでたくさんの｛ブログ・ニュース・記事｝を読んでいます。
Netto de takusan no {burogu/nyūsu/kiji} o yonde imasu.
I read a lot of blogs/newspapers/articles online. - 毎日長時間ネットを使っています。
Mainichi chōjikan netto o tsukatte imasu.
I spend a lot of time online. - ｛デジタル・オンライン｝サブスクリプションを利用しています。
{Dejitaru/Onrain} sabusukuripshon o riyō shite imasu.
I have a digital/online subscription. - パスワードを忘れました。
Pasuwādo o wasuremashita.
I forgot my password. - ｛ファイル・履歴書｝をアップロードしています。
{Fairu/Rirekisho} o appurōdo shite imasu.
I’m uploading a file/my CV. - ｛歌・写真｝をダウンロードしています。
{Uta/Shashin} o daunrōdo shite imasu.
I’m downloading a song/photo. - ネットに繋がりません。ルーターを再起動させなければいけません。
Netto ni tsunagarimasen. Rūtā o saikidō sasenakereba ikemasen.
I can’t get online, I need to restart my router. - 5分後にビデオ通話をします。
Gofungo ni bideo tsūwa o shimasu.
I have a video call in five minutes. - 聞こえますが、画面が固まっています。
Kikoemasuga, gamen ga katamatte imasu.
I can hear you, but the video is frozen. - ミーティングに出るのにサインインをする必要がありますか。
Mītingu ni deruno ni sain in suru hitsuyō ga arimasu ka.
Do I need to sign in to the meeting? - 一度ログアウトして、ミーティングを立ち上げ直します。
Ichido rogu auto shite, mītingu o tachiage naoshimasu.
I’ll log off and restart the meeting. - 在宅勤務をしているので、いいインターネットサービスが必要です。
Zaitaku kin’mu o shite iru node, ii intānetto sābisu ga hitsuyō desu.
I need good internet service because I work remotely. - WiFiのパスワードは何ですか。
Waifai no pasuwādo wa nan desu ka.
What’s your WiFi password? - ウェブサイトがありますか。URLは何ですか。
Webusaito ga arimasu ka. Yū āru eru wa nan desu ka.
Do you have a website? What’s the URL?
SNS esu enu esu Social media
Of course, if you’re talking about the internet you may want to talk about social media: SNSを使う esu enu esu o tsukau (to use social media), ｛フェイスブック・ツイッター｝をしている {feisubukku/tsuittā} o shiteiru (to be on Facebook/Twitter), ｛インスタ（グラム）・リンクトイン｝のアカウントを持っている {Insura(guramu)/Rinkuto in} no akaunto o motte iru (to have an account on Instagram/LinkedIn), アカウントをフォローする akaunto o forō suru (to follow an account), 「いいね！」を押す “iine!” o osu (to like a post), コメントを書く komento o kaku (to leave a comment), コメントに返信する komento ni henshin suru (to reply to a comment), 写真を載せる shashin o noseru (to post a photo), アカウントを削除する akaunto o sakujo suru (to delete an account).
- SNSを使っていますか。

Do you use social media? - ｛フェイスブック・ツイッター｝をやっていますか。

I post a lot of photos on social media. - ｛記事・ブログ｝にコメントしました。
{Kiji/Burogu} ni komento shimashita.
I left a comment on an article / blog post. - …の インスタをフォローしています。
…no insuta o forō shite imasu.
I follow him/her [name] on Instagram. - リンクトインにたくさん投稿しています。
Rinkuto in ni takusan tōkō shite imasu.
He posts a lot on LinkedIn. - どうして投稿したんですか。
Dōshite tōkō shitan desu ka.
Why did you post that? - あんなことをツイートして後悔しています。
An’na koto o tsuīto shite kōkai shite imasu.
I wish I hadn’t tweeted that. - ツイートを削除しました。
Tsuīto o sakujo shimashita.
He/She deleted the tweet. - フェイスブックの友達がたくさんいますね！
Feisubukku no tomodachi ga takusan imasu ne!
You have a lot of Facebook friends! - 友達リクエストが来ました。
Tomodachi rikuesuto ga kimashita.
He/She sent me a friend request. - SNSで知らない人と論争しない方がいいですよ。
Esu enu esu de shiranai hito to ronsō shinai hōga ii desu yo.
You shouldn’t argue with strangers on social media. - SNSは嫌いです。自分のアカウントを全部削除します！
Esu enu esu wa kirai desu. Jibun no akaunto o zenbu sakujo shimasu!
I hate social media. I’m deleting all of my accounts!
