In this post we’re going to look at some useful vocabulary and expressions to talk about a room where you probably spend a lot of time, the living room. (If you’re thinking, hey, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, we’ve got you covered. Check out this post.)

大きくて心地よいソファー ōkikute kokochiyoi sofā  A Big Comfortable Sofa

Let’s start with the 家具 kagu furniture and other basic things that you’re likely to find in the living room: ソファー sofā  a sofa/couch, アームチェア āmuchea an armchair, リビングテーブル ribingu tēburu a coffee table, テーブル tēburu a table, 棚tana a shelf, オットマン ottoman  an ottoman, 暖炉 danro a fireplace, ドア doa a door, 窓 mado a window, 床yuka the floor, 壁kabe a wall, 天井tenjō the ceiling, 煙突entotsu a chimney, クローゼットkurōzetto a closet.

• 私達のソファーはとても心地よいです。
  Watashitachi no sofā wa totemo kokochiyoi desu.
  Our sofa is really comfortable.
• よくアームチェアに座って読書をします。
  Yoku āmuchea ni suwatte dokusho o shimasu.
  I often sit in the armchair and read.

• 本棚に本がたくさんあります。
  Hondana ni hon ga takusan arimasu.
  There are a lot of books on the bookshelves.
• リモコンはリビングテーブルの上にあります。
  Rimokon wa ribingu tēburu no ue ni arimasu.
  The remote control is on the coffee table.
• テレビを見る時、オットマンの上に足をのせます。
  Terebi o miru toki, ottoman no ue ni ashi o nosemasu.
  I put my feet on the ottoman when I watch television.
• 窓の前に小さなテーブルがあります。
  Mado no mae ni chīsana tēburu ga arimasu.
  There’s a small table in front of the window.
• ドアの横に脱いだ靴を置いてください。
  Doa no yoko ni nuida kutsu o oite kudasai.
  Please leave your shoes next to the door.
• クローゼットの中にコートをかけます。
  Kurōzetto no naka ni kōto o kakemasu.
  We hang our coats in the closet.
• 窓から陽の光がたくさん差し込みます。
  Mado kara hi no hikari ga takusan sashikomimasu.
  A lot of sunlight comes through the window.
• リビングから庭が見下ろせます。
  Ribingu kara niwa ga miorosemasu.
  The living room looks out over a garden.

カラフルなクッション karafuru na kusshon Colorful Cushions

In addition to the basic pieces of furniture you probably have in your living room, you most likely have: カーペットkāpetto a carpet, ラグragu a rug, クッションkusshon a cushion, 毛布mōfu a blanket, ランプranpu a lamp, ランプシェードranpu shēdo a lampshade, 写真shashin a photograph, 絵e a painting, 額、額縁gaku, gakubuchi a picture frame, 花瓶kabin a vase, カーテンkāten curtains.

• この部屋のカーペットを取り換えなくてはいけません。
  Kono heya no kāpetto o torikaenakutewa ikemasen.
  We need to replace the carpet in this room.
• ドアの前にきれいなラグがひいてあります。
  Doa no mae ni kirē na ragu ga hīte arimasu.
  There’s a beautiful rug in front of the door.
• ソファーの上にクッションと毛布がたくさんあります。
  Sofā no ue ni kusshon to mōfu ga takusan arimasu.
  We have a lot of cushions and blankets on the sofa.
• あのランプのランプシェードはきれいです。
  Ano ranpu no ranpu shēdo wa kirē desu.
  That lamp has a beautiful lampshade.
• 家族の写真を額に入れて壁に飾っています。
  Kazoku no shashin o gaku ni irete kabe ni kazatte imasu.
  We have photos of our family in frames on the wall.
• この新しい絵はどこに飾ればいいでしょうか。
  Kono atarashī e wa doko ni kazareba ī de shō ka?
  Where should we hang this new painting?
• 花瓶で花を生けなければいけません。
  Kabin de hana o ikenakereba ikemasen.
  I need to put some flowers in the vase.
• ここは暗いです。カーテンを開けてください。
  Koko wa kurai desu. Kāten o akete kudasai.
  It’s dark in here. Please open the curtains.

リモコンが多すぎます！Rimokon ga ōsugimasu! Too Many Remote Controls!

Nowadays there are loads of gadgets in the typical living room. How many of these do you have? パソコ ンpasokon a computer, WIFI WiFi, 時計tokē a clock, テレビterebi a television, ステレオsutereo a stereo, ラジオrajio a radio, スピーカー supīkā a speaker, DVDプレーヤー dībuidī purēyā a DVD player, モデムmodemu a modem, ルーター rūtā a router, リモコンrimokon a remote control.

• WIFIのパスワードは何ですか。
  Waifai no pasuwādo wa nan desu ka?
  What’s your WiFi password?
• 新しいテレビを買う必要があります。
  Atarashī terebi o kau hitsuyō ga arimasu.
  We need a new television.
• テレビのリモコンはどこですか。
  Terebi no rimokon wa doko desu ka?
  Where’s the remote control for the television?
• DVDプレーヤーがありますが、全然使っていません。
  Dībuidī purēyā ga arimasu ga, zenzen tsukatte imasen.
  We have a DVD player, but we never use it.
• このスピーカーは小さいですが、音がいいです。
  Kono supīkā wa chīsai desu ga, oto ga ī desu.
  The speakers are small, but they sound great.
• モデムを再起動する必要があります。
  Modemu o saikidō suru hitsuyō ga arimasu.
  I need to restart the modem.
• この時計は骨董品ですが、まだ動いています！
  Kono tokē wa kottōhin desu ga, mada ugoite imasu!
  The clock is an antique, but it still works!

家事と修理 kaji to shūri Housework and Repairs

Like any room in the house, you’ve got to keep the living room clean. And sometimes, you may want to redecorate. Which brings us to: 掃除をするsōji o suru to clean, きれいにするkirē ni suru to tidy up, 掃除機sōjiki a vacuum cleaner, 床に掃除機をかけるyukani sōjiki o kakeru to vacuum the floor, 埃をとるhokori o toru to dust, 窓を拭くmado o fuku to clean the windows, ペンキを塗るpenki o nuru to paint, 直すnaosu to fix/repair, 取り換えるtorikaeru to replace.

• リビングが散らかっています。お客さんが来る前にきれいにしなければいけません。
  Ribingu ga chirakatte imasu. Okyakusan ga kuru mae ni kirē ni shinakereba ikemasen.
  The living room is messy. We need to tidy up before our guests get here.
• カーペットに掃除機をかけなければいけません。
  Kaapetto ni sōjiki o kakenakereba ikemasen.
  I have to vacuum the carpet.
• 本棚が埃っぽいです！埃をとらなければいけません。
  Hondana ga hokorippoi desu! Hokori o toranakereba ikemasen.
  The bookshelves are dusty! I need to dust them.
• 窓が汚いです。拭かなければいけません。
  Mado ga kitanai desu. Fukanakereba ikemasen.
  The windows are dirty. We need to clean them.
• リビングテーブルをペーパータオルで拭いてください。
  Ribingu tēburu o pēpātaoru de fuite kudasai.
  Please wipe the coffee table with a paper towel.
• 壁に違う色のペンキを塗りたいです。
  Kabe ni chigau iro no penki o nuritai desu.
  I want to paint the walls a different color.
• 花瓶が割れてしまいました。直せますか。
  Kabin ga warete shimaimashita. Naosemasuka?
  The vase is broken. Can we repair it?
• このカーテンはとても古いです。取り換えましょう。
  Kono kāten wa totemo furui desu. Torikaemashō.
  Those curtains are really old. Let’s replace them.
• カーペットに大きなシミがあります。
  Kāpetto ni ōkina shimi ga arimasu.
  There’s a big stain on the carpet.

映画を見ましょう。Ēga o mimashō. Let’s watch a film.

How do you use your living room?

• 毎晩テレビを見ています。
  Maiban terebi o miteimasu.
  We watch television every evening.
• ソファーに座って話しましょう。
  Sofā ni suwatte hanashimashō.
  Let’s sit on the sofa and talk.
• いつもオットマンの上に足をのせてリラックスしています。
  Itsumo ottoman no ue ni ashi o nosete rirakkusu shite imasu.
  I always put my feet on the ottoman and relax.
• 今夜映画を見ましょう。
  Kon’ya ēga o mimashō.
  Let’s watch a film tonight.
• ｛テレビ・ネットフリックス｝で何かいいものをやっていますか。
  {Terebi/Nettofurikkusu} de nani ka ī mono o yatte imasu ka?
  Is there anything good on TV / Netflix?
• 椅子で本を読んでいて、眠ってしまいました。
  Isu de hon o yonde ite, nemutte shimaimashita.
  I fell asleep in the chair reading a book.
• テーブルでトランプをしています。
  Tēburu de toranpu o shite imasu.
  We’re playing cards at the table.
• 子供たちはパソコンでゲームをしています。
  Kodomotachi wa pasokon de gēmu o shite imasu.
  The kids are playing games on the computer.
• ここに座ってください。ワインはいかがですか。
  Koko ni suwatte kudasai. Wain wa ikaga desu ka?
  Please sit here. Would you like a glass of wine?
• ろうそくをつけて静かな音楽を聞きましょう。
  Rōsoku o tsukete shizukana ongaku o kikimashō.
  Let’s put on candles and soft music.
• ソファーに横になって昼寝をします。
  Sofā ni yoko ni natte hirune o shimasu.
  I’m going to lie down on the sofa and take a nap.
