Everyone loves a good film. Well, maybe not everyone. If you’re more of a book person, check out this post. But if you like movies, let’s start with some really basic Japanese vocabulary.

Most people enjoy certain kinds of films more than others. Let’s look at how to talk about movie genres, which ones you like, and which ones you don’t.

Crime dramas are my favorite kind of movies. - 今夜はコメディーを見たい気分です。
Kon’ya wa komedii o mitai kibun desu.
I feel like watching a comedy tonight. - シリアスな映画を見る気分ではありません。
Shiriasu na eiga o miru kibun de wa arimasen.
I’m not in the mood for a serious movie. - 怖い映画は見たくありません。
Kowai eiga wa mitaku arimasen.
I don’t want to watch a scary movie. - 気分が揚がるものが見たいです。
Kibun ga agaru mono ga mitai desu.
I want to watch something uplifting.
その映画を見るのが待ちきれません。 Sono eiga o miruno ga machikiremasen. I can’t wait to see that film.
You may have a lot to say during the months (or years!) before a big film is released.

When is the film coming out? - 公開日はいつですか。
Koukaibi wa itsu desu ka.
What’s the release date? - とてもいい評価を得ています。
Totemo ii hyouka o ete imasu.
It’s getting really good reviews. - とても悪い評価を得ています。
Totemo warui hyouka o ete imasu.
It’s getting really bad reviews. - 前作はとてもよかったです。
Zensaku wa totemo yokatta desu.
I loved his/her last movie. - 続編ですが、最初の映画はよかったです。
Zokuhen desu ga, saisho no eiga wa yokatta desu.
It’s a sequel, and I loved the first movie. - 続編ですが、最初の映画はよくなかったです。
Zokuhen desu ga, saisho no eiga wa yokunakatta desu.
It’s a sequel, and I hated the first movie. - 新作映画の予告編を見ましたか。
Shinsaku eiga no yokokuhen o mimashita ka.
Have you seen the trailer for the new movie yet? - 予告編はとてもよかったです。
Yokokuhen wa totemo yokatta desu.
The trailer looks really good. - 予告編はひどかったです。
Yokokuhen wa hidokatta desu.
The trailer looks terrible.
映画館で Eigakan de At the Movies/Cinema
Here’s some vocabulary for when you finally get to the cinema to see the movie.
- ネットでチケットを買いました。
Netto de chiketto o kaimashita.
I bought tickets online. - 映画館でチケットを買わなければなりません。
Eigakan de chiketto o kawanakereba narimasen.
We have to buy tickets at the cinema. - 映画のチケットは高いですね！
E! Eiga no chiketto wa takai desu ne!
Wow, movie tickets are expensive! - いい席がとれました。
Ii seki ga toremashita.
We have great seats. - ひどい席になりました。
Hidoi seki ni narimashita.
We have awful seats. - よく見えます！
Yoku miemasu!
I can see perfectly! - 何も見えません！この人が私の視界を遮っています。
Nani mo miemasen! Kono hito ga watashi no shikai o saegitte imasu.
I can’t see a thing! This guy is blocking my view. - ポップコーンを買いに行きたいです。
Poppukoon o kai ni ikitai desu.
I feel like getting some popcorn. - この人たちは話し声がうるさいです！
Kono hito tachi wa hanashigoe ga urusai desu!
Those people are talking too loud! - 映画館は混みすぎです。
Eigakan wa komisugi desu.
The cinema is too crowded. - 静かに！映画が始まります。
Shizuka ni! Eiga ga hajimarimasu.
Be quiet! The movie’s starting. - お手洗いに行きたいけれど、何も見逃したくありません！
Otearai ni ikitai keredo, nani mo minogashitaku arimasen!
I have to go to the bathroom but I don’t want to miss anything!
家で映画を見ましょう。 Uchi de eiga o mimashou. Let’s Watch the Movie At Home
For many people, watching movies at home is easier and more enjoyable.
- 今夜はストリーミングで映画を見ましょう。
Kon’ya wa sutoriimingu de eiga o mimashou.
Let’s stream a movie tonight. - 映画のチョイスが多すぎます。
Eiga no choisu ga oosugimasu.
There are too many movies to choose from. - その映画は見たくありません。これはどうですか。
Sono eiga wa mitaku arimasen. Kore wa dou desu ka.
I don’t feel like watching that movie. How about this one? - リモコンはどこですか。
Rimokon wa doko desu ka.
Where’s the remote [control]? - 止めてください！お手洗いに行かなければいけません。
Tomete kudasai! Otearai ni ikanakereba ikemasen.
Pause it! I have to go to the bathroom. - 戻してください！今なんて言いましたか。
Modoshite kudasai! Ima nante iimashita ka.
Rewind! What did she say?
その映画が大好きです。 Sono eiga ga daisuki desu. I loved that movie.
Hopefully you really liked what you saw. If so, you may want to say this.
- 映画は｛よかった・すばらしかった・すばらしかった｝です。
Eiga wa {yokatta/subarashikatta/subarashikatta} desu.
The movie was great/fantastic/wonderful. - 演技がとてもよかったです。
Engi ga totemo yokatta desu.
The acting was really good. - 筋立てがユニークでした。
Sujidate ga yuniiku deshita.
The plot was original. - テンポがよくてわくわくしました。
Tenpo ga yokute wakuwaku shimashita.
It was very fast-paced and exciting. - 主人公がとてもよかったです。
Shujinkou ga totemo yokatta desu.
I loved the main character. - 映画はきれいでした。
Eiga wa kirei deshita.
The film was beautiful. - 予想外の話の展開がありました。
Yosougai no hanashi no tenkai ga arimashita.
There was a surprising plot twist. - その映画をもう一度見てもいいです。
Sono eiga o mou ichido mitemo ii desu.
I would see that movie again. - おすすめします。見た方がいいですよ！
Osusume shimasu. Mita hou ga ii desu yo!
I highly recommend it, you should see it!
その映画は全然よくなかったです。 Sono eiga wa zenzen yokunakatta desu. I hated that movie.
But of course, lots of movies are complete duds.
- 映画はひどかったです。
Eiga wa hidokatta desu.
The movie was terrible/awful. - 演技がひどかったです。
Engi ga hidokatta desu.
The acting was really bad. - 筋立てはありふれたものでした。
Sujidate wa arifureta mono deshita.
The plot was unoriginal. - とてもテンポが悪くて退屈でした。
Totemo tenpo ga warukute taikutsu deshita.
It was very slow and boring. - 主人公がよくありませんでした。
Shujinkou ga yokuarimasen deshita.
I didn’t like the main character. - 映画はよくありませんでした。
Eiga wa yokuarimasen deshita.
The film was bad. - 話は完全に予想がつくものでした。
Hanashi wa kanzen ni yosou ga tsuku mono deshita.
The plot was completely predictable. - その映画は時間とお金の無駄でした。
Sono eiga wa jikan to okane no muda deshita.
That movie was a waste of time and money! - その映画は見ない方がいいですよ。気に入らないと思います。
Sono eiga wa minai hou ga ii desu yo. Ki ni iranai to omoimasu.
Don’t see that movie, you would hate it.
