거실에 geoshil-e: In the Living Room in Korean

In this post we’re going to look at some useful vocabulary and expressions to talk about a room where you probably spend a lot of time, the living room. (If you’re thinking, hey, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, we’ve got you covered. Check out this post.)

편안한 소파 pyeonanhan sopa A Comfortable Sofa

Let’s start with the 가구 gagu furniture and other basic things that you’re likely to find in the living room: 소파 sopa a sofa/couch, 팔걸이의자palgeoli uija an armchair, 탁자, 커피테이블 tagja, keopiteibeul a coffee table, 탁자 tagja a table, 의자 uija a chair, 선반 seonban a shelf, 오토만 otoman an ottoman, 벽난로 byeognanlo a fireplace, 문 mun a door, 창문 changmun a window, 바닥 badag the floor, 벽 byeog a wall, 천장cheonjang the ceiling, 굴뚝 gulttug a chimney, 옷장 otjang a closet.

  • 우리 소파는 정말 편해요.  
    uli sopaneun jeongmal pyeonhaeyo.

    Our sofa is really comfortable.
  • (나는) 자주 팔걸이의자에 앉아 책을 읽어요.  
    (na-neun) jaju palgeoli uija-e anja chaeg-eul ilgeoyo.

    I often sit in the armchair and read.
  • 책장에 책이 많아요.  
    chaegjang-e chaeg-i manayo.

    There are a lot of books on the bookshelves.

  • 리모컨은 커피 테이블 위에 있어요.  
    limokeon-eun keopi teibeul wi-e isseoyo.

    The remote control is on the coffee table.
  • 텔리비전을 볼 때 오토만에 발을 놓아요.
    tellibijeon-eul bol ttae otoman-e bal-eul noayo.

    I put my feet on the ottoman when I watch television.
  • 창문 앞에 작은 테이블이 있어요.  
    changmun ap-e jageun teibeul-i isseoyo.

    There’s a small table in front of the window.
  • 신발은 문 옆에 두세요.
    shinbal-eun mun yeop-e duseyo.

    Please leave your shoes next to the door.
  • (우리는) 외투를 옷장에 걸어요.
    (uli-neun) wetu-leul otjang-e geoleoyo.
    We hang our coats in the closet.
  • 창문을 통해 햇살이 많이 들어와요.
    changmun-eul tonghae haesal-i mani deuleowayo.

    A lot of sunlight comes through the window.
  • 거실에서 정원이 보여요.
    geoshil-eseo jeongwon-i boyeoyo.
    The living room looks out over a garden.

다양한 색의 쿠션들 dayanghan saeg-e kusyeondeul Colorful Cushions

In addition to the basic pieces of furniture you probably have in your living room, you most likely have: 양탄자 (카페트) yangtanja (kapeteu) a carpet, 깔개 (러그)  kkalgae (leogeu) a rug, 쿠션, 방석 kusyeon, bangseog a cushion, 담요 damyo a blanket, 등, 램프 deung, laempeu a lamp, 전등갓, 램프갓 jeondeung-gat, laempeugat a lampshade, 사진 sajin a photograph, 그림 geulim a painting, 액자 aegja a picture frame, 꽃병kkotbyeong a vase, 커튼 keoteun curtains.

  • 우리는 방에 있는 카페트를 교체해야 해요.
     
    uri-neun i bang-e itneun kapeteu-reul gyochehaeya haeyo.
    We need to replace the carpet in this room.
  • 앞에 아름다운 깔개가 있어요.  
    mun ap-e areumdaun kkalgae-ga isseoyo.
    There’s a beautiful rug in front of the door.
  • 소파에 많은 쿠션과 담요들이 있어요.
    sopa-e maneun kusyeongwa dam-yodeul-i isseoyo.
    We have a lot of cushions and blankets on the sofa.
  • 전등갓이 아름다워요.  
    jeondeung-gash-i areumdawoyo.
    The lampshade is beautiful.
  • 우리 가족 사진 액자들이 벽에 걸려 있어요.  
    uri gajog sajin aegjadeul-i byeog-e geollyeo isseoyo.
    We have photos of our family in frames on the wall.
  • 그림을 어디에 걸까요?  
    i sae geulim-eul eodie geolkkayo?
    Where should we hang this new painting?
  • 꽃병에 꽃을 꽂아야 해요.
    kkotbyeong-e kkoch-eul kkojaya haeyo.
    I need to put some flowers in the vase.
  • 여기 어두워요. 커튼을 열어 주세요.
    yeogi jom eoduwoyo. keoteun-eul yeoleo juseyo.
    It’s dark in here. Please open the curtains.

리모컨이 너무 많아요! limokeon-i neomu manayo! Too Many Remote Controls!

Nowadays there are loads of gadgets in the typical living room. How many of these do you have? 컴퓨터 keompyuteo a computer, 와이파이 waipai WiFi, 시계 shigye a clock, 텔레비전 tellebijeon a television, 오디오, 스테레오 odio, seutele-o a stereo, 라디오 ladio a radio, 스피커 seupikeo a speaker, 디비디 플레이어 dibidi peulleieo a DVD player, 모뎀 modem a modem, 라우터 lauteo a router, 리모컨 limokeon a remote control.

  • 와이파이 비밀번호가 뭐예요?  
    waipai bimilbeonho-ga mwoyeyo?
    What’s your WiFi password?
  • 텔레비전이 필요해요.  
    sae tellebijeon-i pilyohaeyo.
    We need a new television.
  • 텔레비전 리모컨은 어디에 있어요?  
    tellebijeon limokeon-eun eodi-e isseoyo?
    Where’s the remote control for the television?
  • 디비디 플레이어가 있지만, 절대 사용하지 않아요
    dibidi peulleieo-ga itjiman, jeoldae sayonghaji anayo.
    We have a DVD player, but we never use it.
  • 스피커는 작지만, 소리가 좋아요.
    seupikeo-neun jagjiman, soliga johayo.
    The speakers are small, but they sound great.
  • 모뎀을 다시 시작해야 해요.
    modem-eul dashi shijaghaeya haeyo.
    I need to restart the modem.
  • 시계는 골동품이지만, 여전히 작동해요!
    geu shigye-neun goldongpum-ijiman, yeojeonhi jagdonghaeyo!
    The clock is an antique, but it still works!

집안일과 수리 jibanilgwa suli Housework and Repairs

Like any room in the house, you’ve got to keep the living room clean. And sometimes, you may want to redecorate. Which brings us to: 청소하다cheongsohada to clean, 정리하다 jeonglihada to tidy up, 진공 청소기  jingong cheongsogi a vacuum cleaner, 바닥을 진공청소기로 청소하다 badag-eul jingongcheongsogilo cheongsohada to vacuum the floor, 먼지를 털다 meonjileul teolda to dust, 창문을 청소하다 changmun-eul cheongsohada to clean the windows, 페인트칠 하다 peinteuchil hada to paint, 고치다/수리하다 gochida/sulihada to fix/repair, 교체하다gyochehada to replace.

  • 거실이 지저분해요.  손님들이 오기 전에 정리해야 해요.
    geoshil-i jom jijeobunhaeyo. sonnimdeul-i ogi jeon-e jeonglihaeya haeyo.
    The living room is messy. We need to tidy up before our guests get here.
  • 카페트를 진공청소기로 청소해야 해요.
    kapeteu-reul jingongcheongsogilo cheongsohaeya haeyo.
    I have to vacuum the carpet.
  • 책장이 먼지 투성이 에요. (나는) 먼지를 털어야 해요.
    chaegjang-i meonji tuseong-i eyo.  meonjileul teoleoya haeyo.
    The bookshelves are dusty! I need to dust them.
  • 창문이 더러워요. 창문을 청소해야 해요.
    changmun-i deoleowoyo. changmun-eul cheongsohaeya haeyo.
    The windows are dirty. We need to clean them.
  • 커피테이블을 종이 타월로 닦아 주세요.  
    keopiteibeul-eul jong-i tawollo dakka juseyo.
    Please wipe the coffee table with a paper towel.
  • 벽을 다른 색으로 칠하고 싶어요.
    byeog-eul daleun saeg-eulo chilhago shipeoyo.
    I want to paint the walls a different color.
  • 꽃병이 깨졌어요. 수리할 있을까요?
    kkochbyeong-i kkaejyeosseoyo. sulihal su isseulkkayo?
    The vase is broken. Can we repair it?
  • 커튼은 너무 오래되었어요. 교체합시다.
    jeo keoteun-eun neomu olaedoeeosseoyo. gyochehamshida.
    Those curtains are really old. Let’s replace them.
  • 카페트에 얼룩이 있어요.
    kapeteu-e keun eollug-i isseoyo.
    There’s a big stain on the carpet.

영화 보자. yeonghwa boja. Let’s watch a film.

How do you use your living room?

  • (우리는) 매일 저녁 텔레비전을 봐요.
    (uri-neun) maeil jeonyeog tellebijeon-eul bwayo.
    We watch television every evening.
  • 소파에 앉아 얘기 하자.
    sopa-e anja yaegi haja.
    Let’s sit on the sofa and talk.
  • 항상 오토만에 발을 올리고 긴장을 풀어요.
    hangsang otoman-e bal-eul olligo ginjang-eul puleoyo.
    I always put my feet on the ottoman and relax.
  • 오늘 밤에 영화 보자.
    oneul bam-e yeonghwa boja.
    Let’s watch a film tonight.
  • 티브이/넷플릭스에 좋은 거 있어요?
    tibeu-i/netpeulligseu-e joheun geo isseoyo?
    Is there anything good on TV / Netflix?
  • 의자에서 책을 읽다가 잠 들었어요.
    uija-eseo chaeg-eul igdaga jam deuleosseoyo.
    I fell asleep in the chair reading a book.
  • 우리는 테이블에서 카드놀이를 하고 있어요.  
    uri-neun teibeul-eseo kadeunoli-leul hago isseoyo.
    We’re playing cards at the table.
  • 아이들이 컴퓨터로 게임을 하고 있어요.  
    aideul-i keompyuteolo geim-eul hago isseoyo.
    The kids are playing games on the computer.
  • 여기 앉아요. 와인 한잔 줄까요?  
    yeogi anjayo. wain hanjan julkkayo?
    Please sit here. Would you like a glass of wine?
  • 양초를 켜고, 부드러운 음악을 듣자.
    yangcho-leul kyeogo, budeuleoun eumag-eul deudja.
    Let’s put on candles and soft music.
  • 소파에 누워서 낮잠을 잘 거예요.
    sopa-e nuwoseo najjam-eul jal geoyeyo.
    I’m going to lie down on the sofa and take a nap.
