화장실에서 hwajangshil-eseo: In the Bathroom in Korean

In this post we’ll take a look at vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about one of the most important rooms in the house. We’re not talking about the kitchen, but you can check that out here. We mean 화장실 hwajangshil the bathroom. Or, if you’re talking about more of a washroom that may or may not have a toilet, 욕실 yogshil the bathroom/washroom.

화장실이 어디 있어요?  hwajangshil-i eodi isseoyo? Where is the toilet?

If you’re visiting a city and doing a lot of sightseeing, chances are you’re going to need to use the toilet at some point. Which means you’ll need to know: 공중화장실 gongjunghwajangshil public toilet; 소변기 sobyeongi urinal; 남자 화장실 namja hwajangshil men’s room; 여자 화장실yeoja hwajangshil ladies’ room.

  • 공중화장실이 근처에 있어요?  
    gongjunghwajangshil-i geuncheoe isseoyo?

    Is there a public toilet nearby?
  • 여자/남자 화장실이 어디 있어요?  
    yeoja/namja hwajangshil-i eodi isseoyo?

    Where’s the men’s room/ladies’ room?
  • 공원에 화장실이 있어요.
    gongwon-e hwajangshil-i isseoyo.

    There are toilets in the park.
  • 공중화장실은 무료인가요 아니면 유료인가요?  
    gongjunghwajangshil-eun mulyoingayo animyeon yulyoingayo?

    Is the public toilet free or do I have to pay?
  • 수행원에게 돈을 지불하세요.
    suhaeng-won-ege don-eul jibulhaseyo.

    Please pay the attendant.
  • 화장실이 다 찼어요.  
    hwajangshil-i da chasseoyo.

    The toilet is occupied.
  • 화장실이 닫혔어요 /  고장 났어요.
    hwajangshil-i dadhyeosseoyo / gojang nasseoyo.

    The toilet is closed/out of service.
  • 화장실을 청소하고 있어요.  
    hwajangshil-eul cheongsohago isseoyo.

    The toilet is being cleaned.
  • 출구 옆에 화장실이/소변기가 있어요.
    yeop-e hwajangshil-i/sobyeongiga isseoyo.

    There are toilets/urinals next to the exit.

매일 아침 샤워를 해요. maeil achim shyawo-leul haeyo. I take a shower every morning.

Let’s start with some of the basics. In most bathrooms, you’ll find: 샤워 shyawo a shower, 세면대 semyeondae a sink, 욕조 yogjo a bathtub, 화장실, 변기 hwajangshil, byeongi a toilet, 휴지, 화장지 hyuji, hwajangji toilet paper, 거울 geoul a mirror, 화장실 수납장/ 욕실 수납장 hwajangshil sunabjang/ yogshil sunabjang a bathroom/medicine cabinet, 목욕 수건 mogyog sugeon a bath towel, 수건 sugeon a hand towel, 수건 걸이 sugeon geoli towel rack.

  • 샤워하고 있어요.
    shyawohago isseoyo.

    I’m taking a shower.
  • 지저분해요/땀이 나요. 샤워 해야 해요.
    jijeobunhaeyo/ttami nayo.  shyawo haeya haeyo.
    I’m dirty/sweaty. I need to take a shower.
  • 목욕하고 있어요.
    mogyoghago isseoyo.

    I’m taking a bath.

  • 얼굴을 씻어야 해요.
    eolgul-eul sshiseoya haeyo.
    I need to wash my face.
  • 변기는 욕조 옆에 있어요.
    byeongineun yogjo yeop-e isseoyo.

    The toilet is next to the bathtub.
  • 욕실 세면대가 작아요.
    yogshil semyeondae-ga jagayo.

    The bathroom sink is small.
  • 세면대 위에 거울이 있어요.
    semyeondae wie geouli isseoyo.
    There’s a mirror above the sink.
  • 아스피린은 약장 안에 있어요.
    aseupilin-eun yagjang an-e isseoyo.

    The aspirin is in the medicine cabinet.
  • 깨끗한 수건은 수건 걸이에 걸려 있어요.
    kkaekkeushan sugeon-eun sugeon geoli-e geollyeo isseoyo.

    A clean towel is hanging on the towel rack.
  • 변기 뚜껑 닫아 주세요.
    byeongi ttukkeong dad-a juseyo.
    Please close the toilet seat/lid.

손을 씻고 있어요. son-eul sshitgo isseoyo. I’m washing my hands.

A lot of what we do in the bathroom is related to washing and getting clean: 비누 binu soap, 샴푸 shyampu shampoo, 컨디셔너  keondishyeoneo conditioner, 데오드란트  de-odeulanteu deodorant, 치약 chiyag toothpaste, 칫솔 chitsol toothbrush, 면도기 myeondogi razor, 면도용 크림 myeondoyong keulim shaving cream, 치실 chishil dental floss, 수분 크림 subun keulim moisturizer/moisturizing cream, 머리빗 meolibit brush/comb 헤어 드라이어 heeo deulaieo blow dryer, 핀셋 pinset tweezers, 발톱깎이  baltobkkakk-i toenail clipper, 손톱깎이 sontobkkakk-i  fingernail clipper.

  • 손을 씻어야 해요.
    son-eul sshiseoya haeyo.
    I need to wash my hands.
  • 비누 어디 있어요?
    binu eodi isseoyo?
    Where’s the soap?
  • 매일 양치질과 치실을 해요.
    maeil bam yangchijilgwa chishil-eul haeyo.
    I brush and floss my teeth every night.
  • (우리는) 치약이 필요해요.
    (uli-neun) chiyag-i deo pilyohaeyo.
    We need more toothpaste.
  • 칫솔은 파란색이고, …씨의 칫솔은 하얀색이에요.
    nae chitsol-eun palansaeg-igo, [name]…sshi-e chis-sol-eun hayansaeg-ieyo.
    My toothbrush is blue, and your toothbrush is white.
  • 거울 앞에서 머리를 빗어요.
    geoul ap-eseo meolileul -biseoyo.
    I brush/comb my hair in front of the mirror.
  • 머리 빗는 세면대 서랍에 있어요.
    meoli bitneun semyeondae yeop seolab-e isseoyo.
    The combs and brushes are in the drawer next to the sink.
  • 샴푸가 떨어졌어요.
    shyampuga da tteol-eojyeosseoyo.
    We’re out of shampoo.
  • 컨디셔너를 사용해요?
    keondisyeoneo-leul sayonghaeyo?
    Do you use conditioner?
  • 샤워할 면도해요.
    shyawohal ttae myeondohaeyo.
    I shave in the shower.
  • 면도기를 사야해요.
    sae myeondogi-leul sayahaeyo.
    I need to buy a new razor.
  • 면도 크림 어디 있어요?
    myeondo keulim eodi isseoyo?
    Where’s the shaving cream?
  • 수분크림 향이 정말 좋아요.
    i subunkeulim hyang-i jeongmal joayo.
    This moisturizer smells really good.
  • 천연 데오드란트를 사용해요.
    cheonyeon de-odeulanteu-leul sayonghaeyo.
    I use a natural deodorant.
  • 핀셋 어디 있어요?
    pinset eodi isseoyo?
    Where are the tweezers?

향수와 화장품 hyangsuwa hwajangpum Perfume and Make Up

Some people’s morning bathroom routines include more than the basics. If you’re one of those people, you may want to know: 향수 hyangsu perfume/cologne, 화장 hwajang makeup, 마스카라 maseukala mascara, 아이섀도우 aishyaedou eye shadow, 아이라이너 ailaineo eyeliner, 파우더 paudeo powder, 립스틱 libseutig lipstick, 매니큐어 maenikyueo nail polish, 블러셔 beulleosyeo blush/rouge, 헤어젤 heeojel hair gel, 헤어스프레이 heeoseupeulei hairspray.

  • 화장해요?
    hwajanghaeyo?
    Do you wear makeup?
  • 매일 아침 화장 해요.  
    achim hwajang haeyo.

    I put on makeup every morning.
  • 씨의 향수가 좋아요. 향기가 좋아요.
    [name]…sshi-e hyangsuga joayo. hyanggi-ga joayo.
    I like your cologne/perfume. It smells nice.
  • 마스카라와 아이라이너를 하고 있어요.
    maseukalawa ailaineoleul hago isseoyo.
    I’m putting on mascara and eyeliner.
  • 무슨 매니큐어가 있어요?  
    museun saeg maenikyueoga isseoyo?
    What color nail polish do you have?
  • 헤어 젤을 매일 사용해요.
    heeo jel-eul maeil sayonghaeyo.
    I use hair gel every day.
  • 헤어 스프레이 있어요?  
    heeo seupeulei isseoyo?
    Do you have hairspray?

화장실 써도 될까요?  hwajangshil jom sseodo doelkkayo? Can I use your bathroom?

Of course, we also take care of more basic biological needs in the bathroom, most of which you probably don’t need to know how to talk about. But here are a few, because you never know!

  • 화장실에 가야 해요.  
    hwajangsil-e gaya haeyo.

    I have to go to the bathroom.
  • 소변/대변 봐야 해요.
    sobyeon/daebyeon bwaya haeyo.
    I have to urinate/defecate.
  • 똥/오줌 마려워요.
    ttong/ojum malyeowoyo.

    I have to pee/poop.
  • 화장실은 어디에요?
    hwajangshil-eun eodieyo?

    Where’s the bathroom?
  • 화장실은 복도 끝 왼쪽/오른쪽에 있어요.  
    hwajangshil-eun bogdo kkeut oenjjog/oleunjjog-e isseoyo.

    The bathroom is down the hall, to the left/right.
  • 들어오지 마세요! 내가 화장실에 있어요!
    deul-eooji maseyo! naega hwajangsil-e isseoyo!

    Don’t come in! I’m on the toilet!
  • 남은 휴지가 없어요!
    nam-eun hyujiga eobseoyo!

    There’s no toilet paper left!
  • 변기 물 내려 주세요.
    byeongi mul naelyeo juseyo.

    Please flush the toilet.
  • 변기가 막혔어요. 뚫어뻥 있어요?
    byeongi-ga maghyeosseoyo. ttul-eoppeong isseoyo?
    The toilet is clogged. Do you have a plunger?
