In this post we’ll talk about vocabulary and expressions related to music: what you listen to, what you dance to, and what kind of musical instruments you may play.
Amo essa canção. I love this song.
Let’s start with some of the basics. If you want to talk about music, you’ll want to know how to say: a canção song, o cantor/a cantora singer, o grupo / a banda group/band, o álbum album, a letra lyrics, o rádio radio, o vídeo musical music video, ouvir música to listen to music, cantar to sing, dançar to dance.
- Qual a sua banda favorita?
What’s your favorite band? - Qual o seu cantor favorito? Qual a sua cantora favorita?
Who’s your favorite singer? - Eu sempre ouço música no carro.
I always listen to music in the car.
- Eu gosto / não gosto desta canção.
I like/don’t like this song. - Aumente o volume! Amo esta canção.
Turn the volume up! I love this song. - Abaixe o volume! A música está alta demais.
Turn the volume down! The music is too loud. - Essa canção tem um ritmo incrível.
This song has a great beat. - Eu sempre canto junto com essa canção.
I always sing along to this song. - Eu sempre danço com essa canção.
I always dance to this song. - Eu não sei a letra desta canção.
I don’t know the lyrics to this song. - Este é o meu vídeo favorito.
This is my favorite music video. - Esta banda acaba de lançar um álbum novo. É ótimo!
This band just released a new album. It’s great. - Eu gosto de ouvir canções variadas no Spotify.

People have all sorts of different taste in music. If you want to talk about music, it’s helpful to know how to say different instruments: o piano piano, o violão guitar, a guitarra elétrica electric guitar, a bateria drums, o teclado keyboard, o violino violin, a trombeta trumpet, a flauta flute, a clarineta clarinet, o saxofone saxophone, o violoncelo cello, a tuba tuba, o trombone trombone, o órgão organ, o acordeon accordion. You will also need to know the verb tocar um instrumento musical to play a musical instrument.
- Cantamos em um coro.
We sing in a choir. - Fiz aulas de piano quando era mais jovem.
I took piano lessons when I was younger. - Quero aprender a tocar violão.
I want to learn how to play the guitar. - Toco violino, mas não muito bem.
I play the violin, but not very well. - Gosto de cantar no chuveiro.
I like to sing in the shower. - Você canta muito bem. Você tem uma linda voz.
You sing really well. You have a great voice. - Ele / Ela toca clarineta em uma orquestra.
He/She plays clarinet in an orchestra. - Ele / Ela toca bateria em uma banda.
He/She plays drums in a band. - Você toca violoncelo profissionalmente ou é só um passatempo?

Music isn’t just for listening to at home, which brings us to: um concerto a concert, a orquestra orchestra, o karaokê karaoke, o/a DJ DJ, a boate / a balada nightclub.

I want to go to a concert. - Comprei ingressos para um concerto neste fim de semana.
I bought tickets to a concert this weekend. - Amamos ver a sinfônica tocar.
We love to go to the symphony. - Gosto de dançar música lenta/ música rápida.
I like to dance to slow/fast songs. - Gosto de ver bandas tocando. Amo música ao vivo.
I like to see bands perform. I love live music. - A banda do meu amigo / da minha amiga está tocando em um bar neste fim de semana.
My friend’s band is playing at a bar this weekend. - Fomos a uma boate e dançamos a noite inteira.
We went to a nightclub and danced all night. - Ele é o meu DJ favorito. Ela é a minha DJ favorita.
