In this post we’re going to talk about vocabulary and expressions related to books and reading. Let’s start with the basics.

Whether you read a lot or a little, you may want to say:
- Ler é o meu passatempo favorito.
Reading is my favorite hobby. - Eu sempre tenho um livro comigo.
I always have a book with me. - Leio todos os dias.
I read every day. - Leio muitos livros / muitas revistas/ muitos artigos / muitos blogs.
I read a lot of books/magazines/articles/blogs. - Leio na cama todas as noites.
I read every night in bed. - Leio online/ no meu celular/ no meu tablet.
I read online/on my phone/on my tablet. - Sou um rato de biblioteca.
I’m a bookworm. (“I’m a library mouse.”) - Eu não tenho muito tempo para ler.
I don’t have time to read very much. - Eu raramente leio / Não leio muito.
I seldom read/I don’t read much. - Há uma livraria ótima na minha cidade.
There’s a great bookstore in my town. - Gosto de ler na biblioteca.
I like to read at the library. - Eu peço emprestado muitos livros da biblioteca pública /dos meus amigos / das minhas amigas.

If you like to read, you probably have a favorite genre.

Este livro é ótimo. This is a great book.
Hopefully you enjoy what you’re reading. If that’s the case, you may want to say:
- Amo este livro.
I love this book. - É realmente um ótimo livro.
It’s a really good book. - Este livro é interessante / emocionante / importante.
This book is interesting/exciting/important. - Este livro foi muito bem escrito.
This book is beautifully written. - A trama é original / surpreendente.
The plot is original/surprising. - Ele é meu personagem favorito.
He’s my favorite character. - Ela é minha personagem favorita.
She’s my favorite character. - Não consigo largar este livro!
I can’t put this book down! - Você tem que ler este livro. Eu o recomendo muito.
You have to read this book. I highly recommend it. - Este livro é muito conhecido.
This book is very popular. - Este livro é um best-seller.
This book is a best seller.
Este livro é horrível! This book is terrible!
Of course, not all books are great. If you’re reading something you don’t like, you may want to say:
- Não gosto deste livro.
I don’t like this book. - Este livro é horrível.
This book is terrible. - Este livro é chato.
This book is boring. - A escrita é ruim.
The writing is awful. - A trama não é nada original.
The plot is not original. - Os / As personagens não são interessantes.
The characters are not interesting. - Esta tradução é ruim.
This is a bad translation. - Eu não suporto aquele livro / aquele(a) autor(a).
I can’t stand that book/that author. - Eu nem terminei o primeiro capítulo.
I didn’t even finish the first chapter. - Este livro é um desperdício de tempo / de dinheiro.
This book is a waste of time/money.
