In this post we’ll take a look at vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about one of the most important rooms in the house. We’re not talking about the kitchen, but you can check that out here. We mean el baño the bathroom.
¿Dónde está el baño? Where is the toilet?
If you’re visiting a city and doing a lot of sightseeing, chances are you’re going to need to use the toilet at some point. Which means you’ll need to know: un baño público public toilet; un urinario urinal; un baño de caballeros/hombres men’s room; un baño de damas/mujeres ladies‘ room.
- ¿Hay algún baño público por aquí cerca?
Is there a public toilet nearby? - ¿Dónde está el baño de hombres/mujeres?
¿Dónde está el baño de caballeros/damas?
Where’s the men’s room/ladies’ room? - En el parque hay baños automáticos y autolimpiantes.
There are automatic, self-cleaning public toilets in the park. - ¿El baño público es gratuito o tengo que pagar?
Is the public toilet free or do I have to pay? - Por favor, páguele / págale al encargado.
Please pay the attendant. - El baño está ocupado.
The toilet is occupied. - El baño está cerrado.
The toilet is closed. - Están limpiando el baño.
The toilet is being cleaned. - Hay baños/urinarios al lado de la salida.
There are toilets/urinals next to the exit.
Todas las mañanas me ducho. I take a shower every morning.
Let’s start with some of the basics. In most bathrooms, you’ll find: una ducha a shower, un lavabo / un lavamanos a sink, una bañera / una tina a bathtub, un inodoro a toilet, papel higiénico toilet paper, un espejo a mirror, un neceser / un botiquín / un gabinete de baño a vanity/medicine cabinet, una toalla (de baño) a bath towel, una toalla de mano a hand towel, un toallero towel rack.
- Me estoy duchando. / Estoy tomando una ducha.
I’m taking a shower. - Estoy sucio/a/sudado/a. Tengo que ducharme. / Tengo que tomar una ducha.
I’m dirty/sweaty. I need to take a shower. - Estoy tomando un baño. / Me estoy bañando.
I’m taking a bath.
- Tengo que lavarme la cara.
I need to wash my face. - El inodoro está al lado de la bañera.
The toilet is next to the bathtub. - El lavabo / lavamanos es pequeño.
The bathroom sink is small. - Hay un espejo arriba del lavabo / lavamanos.
There’s a mirror above the sink. - La aspirina está en el botiquín/gabinete de baño.
The aspirin is in the medicine cabinet. - Hay una toalla limpia colgada en el toallero.
A clean towel is hanging on the towel rack. - Por favor, baja la tapa/el asiento del inodoro.
Please close the toilet seat.
Me estoy lavando las manos. I’m washing my hands.
A lot of what we do in the bathroom is related to washing and getting clean: un jabón soap, un champú shampoo, un acondicionador conditioner, un desodorante deodorant, una pasta de dientes / un dentrífico toothpaste, un cepillo de dientes toothbrush, una rasuradora razor, una crema de afeitar shaving cream, un hilo dental dental floss, un humectante / una crema humectante moisturizer/moisturizing cream, un cepillo (de pelo) (hair)brush, un peine comb, un secador de pelo blow dryer, unas pinzas tweezers, un cortaúñas toenail clipper.
- Tengo que lavarme las manos.
I need to wash my hands. - ¿Dónde está el jabón?
Where’s the soap? - Todas las noches me cepillo los dientes y uso hilo dental.
I brush and floss my teeth every night. - Necesitamos más pasta de dientes/dentrífico.
We need more toothpaste. - Mi cepillo de dientes es azul y tu cepillo de dientes es blanco.
My toothbrush is blue, and your toothbrush is white. - Me cepillo/Me peino frente al espejo.
I brush/comb my hair in front of the mirror. - Los peines y cepillos están en la gaveta junto al lavabo.
The combs and brushes are in the drawer next to the sink. - Se nos acabó el champú. / No tenemos champú.
We’re out of shampoo. - ¿Usas/Usa acondicionador?
Do you use conditioner? - Me afeito en la ducha.
I shave in the shower. - Tengo que comprar una rasuradora.
I need to buy a new razor. - ¿Dónde está la crema de afeitar?
Where’s the shaving cream? - Este humectante huele muy bien.
This moisturizer smells really good. - Uso un desodorante natural.
I use a natural deodorant. - ¿Dónde están las pinzas?
Where are the tweezers?
Perfume y maquillaje Perfume and Make Up
Some people’s morning bathroom routines include more than the basics. If you’re one of those people, you may want to know: un perfume perfume, una colonia cologne, un maquillaje makeup, un rímel mascara, (una) sombra de ojos eye shadow, un delineador (de ojos) eyeliner, un polvo powder, un pintalabios lipstick, un esmalte de uñas / un pintaúñas nail polish, un colorete / un rubor blush/rouge, un gel para el cabello hair gel, una laca (para el cabello) hairspray.
- ¿Usas/Usa maquillaje?
Do you wear makeup? - Me maquillo todas las mañanas.
I put on makeup every morning. - Me gusta tu colonia/perfume. Huele muy bien.
I like your cologne/perfume. It smells nice. - Me estoy poniendo rímel y delineador.
I’m putting on mascara and eyeliner. - ¿Qué color de pintáuñas/esmalte tienes/tiene?
What color nail polish do you have? - Todos los días uso gel para el cabello.
I use hair gel every day. - ¿Tienes/Tiene laca para el cabello?
Do you have hairspray?
¿Puedo usar tu/su baño? Can I use your bathroom?
Of course, we also take care of more basic biological needs in the bathroom, most of which you probably don’t need to know how to talk about. But here are a few, because you never know!
- Tengo que ir al baño.
I have to go to the bathroom. - Tengo que orinar/defecar.
I have to urinate/defecate. - Tengo que hacer pipí/pupú.
Tengo que hacer pis/caca.
I have to pee/poop. - ¿Dónde está el baño?
Where’s the bathroom? - El baño está al final del pasillo a la izquierda/derecha.
The bathroom is down the hall, to the left/right. - ¡No entres, estoy en el inodoro!
Don’t come in! I’m on the toilet! - Se acabó el papel higiénico.
There’s no toilet paper left! - Por favor, baja la palanca (del inodoro). / Por favor, tira la cadena (del inodoro). / Por favor, descarga el inodoro.
Por favor, baje la palanca (del inodoro). / Por favor, tire la cadena (del inodoro). / Por favor, descargue el inodoro.
Please flush the toilet. - El inodoro está atascado. ¿Tienes/Tiene un desatascador?
The toilet is clogged. Do you have a plunger?
