In this post we’ll look at some Spanish vocabulary and expressions for an important part of everyday life: la cocina the kitchen. ¿Sabes cocinar? Do you know how to cook? No matter how your answer, you probably spend a decent amount of time in the kitchen, so let’s dig in.
Platos, vasos, tenedores Plate, Cups, Forks
Let’s start with the things you use to eat. Of course the basics are: cubiertos silverware, un plato plate, un tazón bowl, un cuchillo knife, una cuchara spoon, un tenedor fork, palillos chopsticks, una taza cup, un vaso glass, una copa glass (wine, champagne), una servilleta napkin.
- ¿Dónde están los tenedores, cuchillos y cucharas?
Where are the forks, knives, and spoons? - ¿Dónde están los cubiertos?
Where is the silverware? - Los tenedores, cuchillos y cucharas están en la gaveta.
The forks, knives, and spoons are in the drawer.
- Los vasos limpios están en la alacena.
The clean glasses are in the cabinet. - Las tazas de café están en la estantería.
The coffee cups are on the shelf. - Rompí una copa de vino.
I broke a wine glass. - ¿Usas/Usa palillos de madera o de metal?
Do you use wooden or metal chopsticks? - ¿Me puedes dar una servilleta, por favor?
Could I have a napkin, please? - ¿Tienes/Tiene tazones más grandes para la sopa?
Do you have bigger bowls for the soup? - Por favor, pon/ponga los platos limpios a la alacena.
Please put the clean plates in the cabinet.
Electrodomésticos de cocina Kitchen Appliances
Even if you don’t have a lot of gadgets in your kitchen, you’ve probably got most of these: una nevera / un refrigerador / un frigorífico a refrigerator, una estufa/una cocina a stove/cooker, un horno an oven, un horno microondas a microwave oven, una tostadora a toaster, un fregadero a sink, un lavaplatos a dishwasher.
- La leche está en la nevera/el refrigerador.
The milk is in the refrigerator. - Cierra la puerta de la nevera, por favor.
Close the refrigerator door please! - Preparo la sopa en la estufa.
I cook soup on the stove. - Horneo galletas y pan.
I bake cakes and bread in the oven. - Recaliento las sobras en el microondas.
I reheat left-overs in the microwave. - Hago tostadas en la tostadora.
I make toast in the toaster. - Los platos sucios están en el fregadero.
The dirty dishes are in the sink. - Tengo que vaciar el lavaplatos.
I need to empty the dishwasher.
And depending on where you live and what you like to eat, there’s also: una olla arrocera a rice maker, una cafetera a coffee maker, una jarra/tetera eléctrica an electric kettle, una olla de cocción lenta a slow cooker, una freidora de aire an air fryer, una panificadora/una máquina panificadora/una máquina de hacer pan a bread machine, una heladera/una máquina para hacer helados an ice-cream maker, una freidora a deep fryer.
- Siempre uso una olla arrocera. Nunca preparo el arroz en la estufa.
I always use a rice cooker. I never cook rice on the stove. - Necesitamos una cafetera nueva.
We need a new coffee maker. - Hiervo el agua en la jarra/tetera eléctrica.
I boil water in the electric kettle. - ¿Sueles/Suele usar una olla de cocción lenta?
Do you use your slow cooker often? - Las freidoras de aire no utilizan mucho aceite.
Air friers don’t use a lot of oil. - Hago pan en la máquina panificadora/de hacer pan.
I make bread in the bread maker. - Me regalaron una máquina para hacer helados por mi cumpleaños.
I got an ice cream maker as a gift for my birthday. - Las freidoras utilizan mucho aceite.
Deep friers use a lot of oil.
Tablas para cortar y tazones para mezclar Cutting boards and Mixing Bowls
No matter how much you cook, you probably have at least a few of these: una tabla para cortar a cutting board, un juego de cuchillos a set of knives, un tazón para mezclar a mixing bowl, una cuchara de madera a wooden spoon, un cucharón a ladle, un procesador de alimentos a food processor, una batidora eléctrica an electric mixer, un wok a wok, una bandeja para hornear a baking sheet, un molde para hornear a baking pan, una sartén a frying pan, una olla a pot.
- Corto los vegetales en una tabla para cortar.
I cut vegetables on a cutting board. - No hay espacio en la encimera.
There’s no space on the counter. - ¿Tienes/Tiene un juego de cuchillos afilados?
Do you have a set of sharp knives? - Mezclo los ingredientes en el tazón para mezclar.
I mix ingredients in a mixing bowl. - Revuelvo la sopa con una cuchara de madera.
I stir soup with a wooden spoon. - Uso un cucharón para servir la sopa.
I use a ladle to serve soup. - Los procesadores de alimentos son rápidos y útiles.
Food processors are fast and convenient. - ¿Sueles utilizar la batidora eléctrica?
Do you use the electric mixer often? - Las galletas están en la bandeja para hornear.
The cookies are on the baking sheet. - Preparo el pescado en una bandeja para hornear.
I cook fish in a baking pan. - Utilizo el wok muy a menudo.
I use the wok very often. - Preparo los huevos en una sartén.
I cook eggs in a frying pan. - ¿Tienes/Tiene una olla grande para la sopa?
Do you have a large pot for the soup?

Recipientes, tarros y bolsas Containers, Jars, and Bags
Different foods are stored in different types of containers, so may want to say:
- una caja de pasta/galletas/cereal
a box of pasta/cookies/cereal - una bolsa de papas/vegetales congelados
a bag of potatoes/frozen vegetables - una botella de agua/vino
a bottle of water/wine - un cartón de leche/jugo
a carton of milk/juice - una lata de frijoles/atún/sopa
a can of beans/tuna/soup - un frasco de aceitunas/pepinillos/conservas de frutas
a jar of olives/pickles/fruit preserves - un frasco de salsa de tomate/mayonesa
a container of ketchup/mayonnaise - un paquete de pollo/tofu
a package of chicken/tofu
La cocina está limpia. The kitchen is clean.
Even if you don’t use it much, the kitchen always seems to need cleaning. And there’s a whole set of vocabulary that you can use to talk about that: una escoba a broom, un trapeador/una fregona/un lampazo a mop, una esponja a sponge, un detergente para platos dish detergent, un paño de cocina a dishtowel, un limpiador en aerosol a spray cleaner, una toalla de papel a paper towel, un balde a bucket, un limpiador de pisos floor cleaner, un bote de basura/una papelera trash can/bin.
- Tengo que lavar/fregar los platos.
I need to do the dishes. - Tenemos que comprar detergente para platos.
We need to buy dish detergent. - Utilizo una esponja y un paño de cocina para lavar los platos.
I use a sponge and a dishtowel to do the dishes. - Barro el piso con una escoba.
I sweep the floor with a broom. - Trapeo el piso cuando está sucio.
Paso la fregona por el piso cuando está sucio.
I mop the floor when it’s dirty. - Limpio la encimera con una toalla de papel y limpiador en aerosol.
I wipe the counter with a paper towel and a spray cleaner. - Pongo limpiador de piso y agua caliente en el balde.
I put floor cleaner and warm water in the bucket. - Tengo que sacar la basura.
I need to take out the trash. - El bote de basura/La papelera huele mal.
The trashcan smells bad!
