Valentine’s Day is coming up, so let’s cover some Portuguese vocabulary and expressions to help you talk about all things love.
Você me ama? Do you love me?
Let’s start with some basics. If you’re talking to your significant other, you might want to use a pet name like tesouro sweetheart, querida darling (f.), meu amor my love, or gato baby (m). Note that in Brazil, Valentine’s Day is celebrated on June 12, which is the eve of Saint Anthony’s, the patron saint of sweethearts. It’s called Dia dos Namorados, Day of Sweethearts.
- Eu te amo.
I love you. - Amo ela.
I love her. - Amo ele.
I love him.
- Este é o meu namorado. Esta é a minha namorada.
This is my boyfriend/girlfriend. - Este é o meu marido. Esta é a minha esposa.
This is my husband/wife. - Feliz Dia dos Namorados!
Happy Valentine’s Day! - Feliz Aniversário de Casamento!
Happy Anniversary. - Estou com saudades de você.
I miss you.
Eu gosto muito dela. I really like her.
If someone has caught your eye, you might want to say:
- Eu gosto muito dele/ dela.
I really like him/her. - Ele/ Ela é muito atraente.
He/She is really good-looking. - Ela é linda.
She’s beautiful. - Ele é bonito.
He’s handsome. - Ele/Ela é engraçado(a).
He/She is funny. - Ele / Ela é interessante.
He/She is interesting. - Ele / Ela é inteligente.
He/She is smart.
Você quer sair para jantar comigo? Do you want to have dinner with me?
Maybe there’s a mutual attraction? One way to find out is to ask.
- Você quer sair comigo?
Do you want to go out with me? - Você quer tomar um café / um aperitivo comigo?
Do you want to have coffee/drinks with me? - Vamos jantar juntos(as).
Let’s have dinner together. - Eu gostei muito de te conhecer.
I really enjoyed getting to know you. - Você quer sair de novo qualquer hora dessas?
Do you want to go out again some time? - Eu quero te ver de novo.
I want to see you again. - Eu quero te beijar.
I want to kiss you.
Nós já estamos juntos(as) há um ano. We’ve been together for a year.
If you’re in a long-term relationship, you might want to know how to say:
- Há quanto tempo vocês dois/ duas estão juntos(as)?
How long have you two been together? - Como vocês dois/duas se conheceram?
How did you two meet? - Nos conhecemos no trabalho / na faculdade.
We met at work/college. - Nos conhecemos em uma festa/ um bar.
We met at a party/bar. - Nos conhecemos online.
We met online. - Nossos(as) amigos(as)/ pais nos apresentaram.
Our friends/parents introduced us. - Nós estamos juntos(as) há um ano/dois anos/ muito tempo.
We’ve been together for a year/two years/a long time. - Nós moramos juntos(as).
We live together. - Ainda não estamos casados(as).
We’re not married yet. - Queremos nos casar, mas ainda não estamos prontos(as).
We want to get married, but we’re not ready.
Quer casar comigo? Will you marry me?
If you decide that you want to get married, you might want to say:
- Vamos nos casar.
Let’s get married. - Estamos noivos(as).
We’re engaged. - Esta é a minha aliança de noivado.
This is my engagement ring. - Este é o meu noivo/ a minha noiva.
This is my fiancé / fiancée. - Estamos planejando nosso casamento.
We’re planning our wedding. - Nosso casamento será simples e pequeno.
Our wedding will be simple and small. - A noiva é linda.
The bride is beautiful. - O noivo é bonito.
The groom is handsome. - O casamento foi lindo.
The wedding was beautiful. - Este é o meu marido.
This is my husband. - Esta é a minha esposa.
This is my wife. - Há quanto tempo vocês estão casados(as)?
How long have you (two) been married? - Hoje é o nosso aniversário de casamento.
Today is our wedding anniversary.
Nós não estamos mais juntos(as). We’re not together anymore.
Hopefully your relationship is long and strong and full of happiness. But, sometimes things just don’t work out.
- Eles(as) não estão felizes juntos(as).
They’re not happy together. - Eles(as) discutem o tempo todo.
They argue all the time. - Eles(as) estão tendo uma briga feia.
They’re having a big fight. - Ele a traiu.
He cheated on her. - Ela o traiu.
She cheated on him. - Ele/ela está tendo um caso.
He/She is having an affair. - Eu quero terminar com você.
I want to break up with you. - Eu quero o divórcio.
I want to get a divorce. - Eles(as) terminaram.
They broke up. - Eles(as) se divorciaram.
They got divorced.
Feliz Dia dos Namorados. Happy Valentine’s Day
For now, though, let’s just focus on the positive.
- Estas flores são para você.
These flowers are for you. - Estes chocolates são para você.
These chocolates are for you. - Vamos fazer um jantar romântico.
Let’s have a romantic dinner. - Você é muito importante para mim.
You’re very important to me. - Quero passar o resto da minha vida com você.
I want to spend my life with you. - Eu penso em você o tempo todo.
I think about you all the time.
