French Family Terms: La famille

In this post, we’ll learn French family terms so that you can build your French vocabulary to talk about your famille family.

As-tu une grande famille ? Do you have a big family?

First, let’s build your French vocabulary by starting with some basic French family terms: la mère, maman mother; le père, papa father; le frère brother; la sœur sister; la fille daughter; le fils son, les parents parents; les enfants children

• J’ai une grande/petite famille.
  I have a big/small family.
• Ma mère est médecin. Mon père est enseignant.
  My mother is a doctor. My father is a teacher.
• Avez-vous des frères ou des sœurs ?
  Do you have brothers or sisters?

• J’ai une sœur aînée et un frère cadet.
  I have one older sister and one younger brother.
• J’ai trois frères.
  I have three brothers.
• J’ai deux sœurs.
  I have two sisters.
• Je suis fils/fille unique.
  I am an only child.
• Avez-vous des enfants ?
  Do you have any children?
• Nous avons un fils et une fille.
  We have a son and a daughter.
• Qui est l’ainé(e)/le cadet/la cadette dans votre famille ?
  Who is the oldest/youngest in your family?

C’est ma tante. This is my aunt.

Now let’s build your French vocabulary by looking at some extended French family terms: les proches, les membres de la famille relatives; les grands-parents grandparents; la grand-mère grandmother; le grand-père grandfather; le petit-fils grandson; la petite-fille granddaughter; la tante aunt; l’oncle (m.) uncle; le cousin/la cousine cousin; la nièce niece; le neveu nephew.

• Vous voyez souvent vos proches ?
  How often do you see your relatives?
• Où habitent vos grands-parents ?
  Where do you grandparents live?
• Ma grand-mère travaille encore, mais mon grand-père est à la retraite.
  My grandmother is still working, but my grandfather is retired.
• Nous avons trois petits-enfants : un petit-fils et deux petites-filles.
  We have three grandchildren: one grandson and two granddaughters.
• Ma tante et mon oncle vivent près de notre maison.
  My aunt and uncle live near our house.
• J’ai beaucoup de cousins/cousines.
  I have a lot of cousins.
• Ma nièce vient de commencer l’université.
  My niece just started university.
• J’ai quatre neveux.
  I have four nephews.

French Vocabulary Related to Marriage

Now let’s learn some French vocabulary related to marriage. Some key vocabulary to know is: la femme, l’épouse wife; le mari, l’époux husband; se marier to get married; divorcer to get divorced; célibataire/non marié single/unmarried. Let’s see some examples.

• Êtes-vous marié(e) ou célibataire ?
  Are you married or single?
• Que fait votre épouse/mari dans la vie ?
  What does your wife/husband do for a living?
• Quand vous êtes-vous mariés ?
  When did you get married?
• Nous sommes mariés depuis 20 ans. Notre anniversaire de mariage est ce week-end.
  We’ve been married for twenty years. Our wedding anniversary is this weekend.
• Ma femme est enceinte. Nous allons avoir un bébé dans deux mois.
  My wife is pregnant. We’re having a baby in two months.
• Mes parents sont divorcés.
  My parents are divorced.

Nous avons un bébé. We have a baby.

Finally, let’s learn some French vocabulary to talk about things related to families: le petit ami/copain (fam.)boyfriend; la petite amie/copine (fam.)girlfriend; le bébé baby; enceinte pregnant; adopter to adopt; naître to be born; mort(e) dead; vivant(e), en vie alive; le beau-père stepfather; la belle-mère stepmother; le beau-fils stepson; la belle-fille stepdaughter.

• Quel est le nom de votre petit(e) ami(e) ?
  What is your boyfriend’s/girlfriend’s name?
• Nous allons adopter un enfant.
  We’re going to adopt a child.
• J’ai été adopté.
  I was adopted.
• Quand votre fils/fille est-il/elle né(e) ?
  When was your son/daughter born?
• Ma grand-mère est vivante, mais mon grand-père est mort.
  My grandmother is alive, but my grandfather is dead.
• J’ai une bonne relation avec mon beau-père/ma belle-mère.
  I have a good relationship with my stepfather/stepmother.
• Ma belle-fille/son beau-fils vit avec nous.
  My stepdaughter/stepson lives with us.
• Ma famille a un chien et un chat.
  My family has a dog and a cat.
