The holiday season is just around the corner, so you may want to know how to talk about the festivities in German.
Fröhliche Weihnachten! Merry Christmas!
The first thing you may want to know how to say is of course Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah. Here are some other expressions you can use to wish people well during the holiday season.

Lots of people put up decorations this time of year, so you may want to say: der Weihnachtsbaum/ Christbaum (Christmas tree), die Menora, -s (menorah), der Stern, -e (star), die Kerze, -n (candle), die Glocke, -n (bell), bunte Lichter (colorful lights), die Krippe, -n (nativity scene), das Jesuskind (baby Jesus), der Engel, -Ø (angel), die heiligen drei Könige (three kings), der Nikolaus (Santa Claus), der Schneemann, -¨er (snowman), das Rentier, -e (reindeer).
- Wir kaufen dieses Wochenende einen Weihnachtsbaum.
We’re going to buy a Christmas tree this weekend. - Lasst uns den Weihnachtsbaum schmücken.
Let’s decorate the Christmas tree. - Lasst uns die Menora anzünden.

Geschenke! Presents!
Exchanging presents is of course a big part of the holiday season, so you may want to say: das Geschenk, -e (gift/present), das Geschenkpapier (wrapping paper), die Karte, -n (card).
- Ich muss für viele Freunde und Verwandte Geschenke kaufen.
I have to buy gifts for a lot of friends and relatives. - Ich habe ein Geschenk für dich.
I got a present for you. - Was schenkst du mir?
What did you get for me? - Pack dein Geschenk aus!
