It’s invierno (winter) in the northern hemisphere, which means that in many places hace mucho frío (it’s very cold). In this post we’ll learn some Spanish vocabulary for talking about cold winter weather.
Hace mucho frío afuera. It’s Cold Outside!
Let’s start with some basic expressions that will help you talk about cold winter weather.
- Hace frío.
It’s cold. - Está helando.
It’s freezing! - Está nevando.
It’s snowing.
- Está cayendo aguanieve.
It’s sleeting. - Hace frío y viento.
It’s cold and windy. - La nieve es hermosa.
The snow is beautiful. - Esta semana habrá una tormenta de nieve.
We’re going to have a blizzard this week. - El lago está congelado/helado.
The lake is frozen. - La nieve se está derritiendo.
The snow is melting. - Tengo escalofrío. / Estoy temblando de frío.
I’m shivering!

I love the snow. - Hagamos un muñeco de nieve.
Let’s make a snowman. - Voy a esquiar este fin de semana.
I’m going skiing this weekend. - ¡Vamos a montar en trineo!
Let’s go sledding. - Patinemos sobre hielo.
Let’s go ice skating. - Me gusta hacer snowboard.
I like snowboarding. - ¡Vamos a hacer una guerra de nieve!
Let’s have a snowball fight! - Los niños están construyendo un castillo de nieve.
The kids are building a snow fort.
Odio el invierno. I Hate the Winter
Of course, winter isn’t all fun and games.
- Odio la nieve.
I hate the snow. - Tengo que quitar la nieve de la entrada.
I have to shovel the driveway. - Las carreteras están heladas y peligrosas.
The roads are icy and dangerous. - Me resbalé en la acera.
I slipped on the sidewalk. - ¡No me gusta el clima frío!
I don’t like cold weather! - Extraño el sol.
I miss the sun. - El clima invernal es deprimente.
Winter weather is depressing.

If you have to go outside, you need to dress appropriately. You’ll probably wear: un abrigo de invierno (a winter coat), un sombrero (a hat), una bufanda / un pañuelo (a scarf), guantes (gloves), mitones (mittens), botas (boots).
- Hoy necesito un sombrero y unos guantes.
I need a hat and gloves today. - Este abrigo no es suficientemente pesado.
This coat isn’t heavy enough! - ¿Tienes botas impermeables?
Do you have waterproof boots? - Llevo un suéter y un abrigo.
I’m wearing a sweater and a coat.
Tardes acogedoras, tranquilas Cozy, Quiet Evenings
But inside, you can still feel cálido y acogedor (warm and cozy). You can sit next to una fogata / un fuego (a fire), and maybe enjoy una taza de té (a cup of tea) or better yet, una taza de chocolate caliente (a cup of hot chocolate). Just get una cobija (a blanket), maybe un buen libro (a good book), and you’re ready to make the most out of los días fríos y las noches largas (the cold days and long nights). It’s only a few more months until the spring!

It’s warm and cozy in the house. - Vamos a encender la chimenea.
Let’s make a fire in the fireplace. - Tomemos chocolate caliente junto al fuego.
Let’s have hot chocolate in front of the fire. - Me estoy calentando junto al fuego.
I’m warming up next to the fire. - ¿Tienes una cobija?
Do you have a blanket? - Me acuesto temprano durante el invierno.
I go to bed early in the winter.
