In this post we’re going to talk about Spanish vocabulary and expressions related to books and reading. Let’s start with the basics.

Whether you read a lot or a little, you may want to say:
- Leer es mi pasatiempo preferido.
Reading is my favorite hobby. - Siempre llevo un libro conmigo.
I always have a book with me. - Leo todos los días.
I read every day. - Leo muchos libros/artículos/blogs/muchas revistas.
I read a lot of books/magazines/articles/blogs. - Todas las noches leo en la cama.
I read every night in bed. - Leo en línea/en mi teléfono/en mi tableta.
I read online/on my phone/on my tablet. - Soy un ratón de biblioteca.
I’m a bookworm. (literally, I’m a library mouse.) - No tengo mucho tiempo para leer.
I don’t have time to read very much. - Rara vez leo. / No leo mucho.
I seldom read/I don’t read much. - En mi ciudad hay una librería muy buena.
There’s a great bookstore in my town. - Me gusta leer en la biblioteca.
I like to read at the library. - Tengo muchos libros prestados de la biblioteca/de mis amigos.
I borrow a lot of books from the library/from my friends. - Tengo muchos libros.
I have a lot of books. - Todas las semanas descargo un libro nuevo.
I download a new book every week.

If you like to read, you probably have a favorite genre.

I like nonfiction. - Prefiero literatura clásica.

Este libro es muy bueno. This is a great book.
Hopefully you enjoy what you’re reading. If that’s the case, you may want to say:
- Me encanta este libro.
I love this book. - Realmente es un libro muy bueno.
It’s a really good book. - Este libro es interesante/emocionante/importante.
This book is interesting/exciting/important. - Este libro está muy bien escrito.
This book is beautifully written. - La trama es original/sorprendente.
The plot is original/surprising. - Él es mi personaje favorito.
He’s my favorite character. - Ella es mi personaje favorito.
She’s my favorite character. - No me puedo despegar de este libro.
I can’t put this book down. (literally, I can’t unstick myself from this book.) - Tienes que leer este libro. Te lo recomiendo ampliamente.
You have to read this book. I highly recommend it. - Este libro es muy famoso.
This book is very popular. - Este libro es un best seller.
This book is a best seller.
¡Este libro es malísimo! This book is terrible!
Of course, not all books are great. If you’re reading something you don’t like, you may want to say:
- No me gusta este libro.
I don’t like this book. - Este libro es terrible.
This book is terrible. - Este libro es aburrido.
This book is boring. - Está muy mal escrito.
The writing is awful. - La trama no es nada original.
The plot is not original. - Los personajes no son interesantes.
The characters are not interesting. - Esta es una mala traducción.
This is a bad translation. - No soporto ese libro/a ese autor.
I can’t stand that book/that author. - Ni siquiera terminé el primer capítulo.
I didn’t even finish the first chapter. - Este libro es una pérdida de tiempo/dinero.
This book is a waste of time/money.
