In this post we’ll look at some Portuguese vocabulary and expressions for an important part of everyday life: a cozinha the kitchen. Você cozinha? Do you cook? No matter how you answer, you probably spend a decent amount of time in the kitchen, so let’s dig in.
Os Pratos, As Xícaras, Os Garfos Plate, Cups, Forks
Let’s start with the things you use to eat. Of course the basics are: o prato plate, a tigela bowl, a faca knife, a colher spoon, o garfo fork, os pauzinhos chopsticks, a xícara cup, o copo glass, o guardanapo napkin.
- Onde estão os garfos, as facas e as colheres?
Where are the forks, knives, and spoons? - Os garfos, as facas, e as colheres estão na gaveta.
The forks, knives, and spoons are in the drawer. - Os copos limpos estão no armário.
The clean glasses are in the cabinet.
- As xícaras de café estão na prateleira.
The coffee cups are on the shelf. - (Eu) Quebrei uma taça de vinho.
I broke a wine glass. - Você usa pauzinhos de madeira ou de metal?
Do you use wooden or metal chopsticks? - Me passa um guardanapo, por favor?
Could I have a napkin, please? - Você tem tigelas maiores para a sopa?
Do you have bigger bowls for the soup? - Por favor, ponha os pratos limpos no armário.
Please put the clean plates in the cabinet.
Aparelhos de Cozinha / Eletrodomésticos Kitchen Appliances
Even if you don’t have a lot of gadgets in your kitchen, you’ve probably got most of these: uma geladeira a refrigerator, um fogão a stove/cooker, um forno an oven, um forno de micro-ondas a microwave oven, uma torradeira a toaster, uma pia a sink, um lava-louças a dishwasher.
- O leite está na geladeira.
The milk is in the refrigerator. - Feche a porta da geladeira, por favor!
Close the refrigerator door please! - (Eu) Faço a sopa no fogão.
I cook soup on the stove. - (Eu) Asso os bolos e os pães no forno.
I bake cakes and bread in the oven. - (Eu) Requento as sobras no micro-ondas.
I reheat leftovers in the microwave. - (Eu) Torro o pão na torradeira.
I make toast in the toaster. - As louças sujas estão na pia.
The dirty dishes are in the sink. - Preciso esvaziar o lava-louça.
I need to empty the dishwasher.
And depending on where you live and what you like to eat, there’s also: uma panela de arroz elétrica a rice maker, uma cafeteira elétrica a coffee maker, uma chaleira elétrica an electric kettle, uma panela elétrica a slow cooker, uma fritadeira elétrica an air fryer, uma máquina para fazer pão a bread machine, uma sorveteira an ice-cream maker, uma panela deep fry a deep fryer.
- Eu sempre uso uma panela elétrica de arroz. Eu nunca faço arroz no fogão.
I always use a rice cooker. I never cook rice on the stove. - (Nós) Precisamos de uma cafeteira elétrica nova.
We need a new coffee maker. - (Eu) Fervo água na chaleira elétrica.
I boil water in the electric kettle. - Você usa sua panela elétrica frequentemente?
Do you use your slow cooker often? - As fritadeiras elétricas não usam muito óleo.
Air friers don’t use a lot of oil. - (Eu) Faço pão na máquina para fazer pão.
I make bread in the bread maker. - (Eu) Ganhei uma sorveteira de aniversário.
I got an ice cream maker for my birthday. - As panelas deep fry usam bastante óleo.
Deep friers use a lot of oil.
Tábuas para cortar e Tigelas para Misturar Cutting boards and Mixing Bowls
No matter how much you cook, you probably have at least a few of these: uma tábua para cortar a cutting board, um jogo de facas a set of knives, uma tigela para misturar a mixing bowl, uma colher de pau a wooden spoon, uma concha a ladle, um processador de alimentos a food processor, uma batedeira elétrica an electric mixer, uma panela wok a wok, uma assadeira rasa a baking sheet, uma assadeira funda a baking pan, uma frigideira a frying pan, uma panela a pot.
- (Eu) Corto verduras na tábua para cortar.
I cut vegetables on a cutting board. - Não há lugar no balcão.
There’s no space on the counter. - Você tem um jogo de facas afiadas?
Do you have a set of sharp knives? - (Eu) Misturo os ingredientes em uma tigela.
I mix ingredients in a mixing bowl. - (Eu) Mexo a sopa com uma colher de pau.
I stir soup with a wooden spoon. - (Eu) Uso uma concha para servir a sopa.
I use a ladle to serve soup. - Os processadores de alimentos são rápidos e práticos.
Food processors are fast and convenient. - Você usa bastante a batedeira elétrica?
Do you use the electric mixer often? - As bolachas estão na assadeira.
The cookies are on the baking sheet. - (Eu) Preparo peixe em uma assadeira.
I cook fish in a baking pan. - (Eu) uso bastante a panela wok.
I use the wok very often. - Faço ovos em uma frigideira.
I cook eggs in a frying pan. - Você tem uma panela grande para a sopa?
Do you have a large pot for the soup?

Vasilhas, Vidros e Sacos Containers, Jars, and Bags
Different foods are stored in different types of containers, so may want to say:
- uma caixa de macarrão / bolachas / cereais
a box of pasta/cookies/cereal - um saco de batatas / vegetais congelados
a bag of potatoes/frozen vegetables - uma garrafa de água / vinho
a bottle of water/wine - uma caixa de leite / suco
a carton of milk/juice - uma lata de feijão / atum / sopa
a can of beans/tuna/soup - um vidro de azeitonas /picles /frutas em conserva
a jar of olives/pickles/fruit preserves - um pote de ketchup / maionese
a container of ketchup/mayonnaise - uma embalagem de frango / de tofu
a package of chicken/tofu
A cozinha está limpa! The kitchen is clean!
Even if you don’t use it much, the kitchen always seems to need cleaning. And there’s a whole set of vocabulary that you can use to talk about that: uma vassoura a broom, um esfregão a mop, uma esponja a sponge, o detergente para louça dish detergent, um pano de pratos a dishtowel, um limpador em spray a spray cleaner, um papel toalha a paper towel, um balde a bucket, o limpador de pisos floor cleaner, a lata /o cesto de lixo trash can/bin.
- (Eu) Preciso lavar a louça.
I need to do the dishes. - (Nós) Precisamos comprar detergente para louça.
We need to buy dish detergent. - (Eu) uso uma esponja e um pano de pratos para lavar e secar a louça.
I use a sponge and a dishtowel to do the dishes. - Varro o chão com uma vassoura.
I sweep the floor with a broom. - Uso um esfregão quando o chão está sujo.
I mop the floor when it’s dirty. - Eu passo papel toalha com um limpador em spray para limpar o balcão.
I wipe the counter with a paper towel and a spray cleaner. - (Eu) Ponho limpa pisos e água morna em um balde.
I put floor cleaner and warm water in the bucket. - Preciso tirar o lixo.
I need to take out the trash. - A lixeira está cheirando mal.
The trashcan smells bad!
