In this post we’re going to look at some useful vocabulary and expressions to talk about a room where you probably spend a lot of time, the living room. (If you’re thinking, hey, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, we’ve got you covered. Check out this post.)
Um Sofá Grande e Confortável A Big Comfortable Sofa
Let’s start with the mobília furniture and other basic things that you’re likely to find in the living room: um sofá a sofa/couch, uma poltrona an armchair, uma mesinha de centro a coffee table, uma mesa a table, uma cadeira a chair, uma prateleira a shelf, um puff an ottoman, uma lareira a fireplace, uma porta a door, uma janela a window, o chão the floor, a parede a wall, o teto the ceiling, a chaminé a chimney, um armário embutido a closet.
- Nosso sofá é muito confortável.
Our sofa is really comfortable. - Eu sempre me sento em uma poltrona e leio.
I often sit in the armchair and read. - Há muitos livros nas estantes (de livros).
There are a lot of books on the bookshelves.
- O controle remoto está na mesinha de centro.
The remote control is on the coffee table. - Ponho meus pés sobre o puff quando assisto televisão.
I put my feet on the ottoman when I watch television. - Há uma mesa pequena em frente à janela.
There’s a small table in front of the window. - Por favor, deixe os seus sapatos ao lado da porta.
Please leave your shoes next to the door. - (Nós) Penduramos nossos casacos no armário.
We hang our coats in the closet. - Entra bastante sol pela janela.
A lot of sunlight comes through the window. - A sala de estar dá para o jardim.
The living room looks out over a garden.

In addition to the basic pieces of furniture you probably have in your living room, you most likely have: um carpete a carpet, um tapete a rug, uma almofada a cushion, um cobertor a blanket, uma luminária a lamp, um abajur a lampshade, uma fotografia a photograph, uma pintura a painting, um porta-retratos a picture frame, um vaso a vase, cortinas curtains.
- Precisamos trocar o carpete neste quarto.
We need to replace the carpet in this room. - Há um lindo tapete em frente à porta.
There’s a beautiful rug in front of the door. - Temos muitas almofadas e cobertas no sofá.
We have a lot of cushions and blankets on the sofa. - Aquela luminária tem uma linda cúpula.
That lamp has a beautiful lampshade. - Colocamos fotos emolduradas da nossa família na parede.
We have photos of our family in frames on the wall. - Onde devemos pendurar este quadro novo?
Where should we hang this new painting? - Preciso colocar flores no vaso.
I need to put some flowers in the vase. - Está escuro aqui. Por favor, abra as cortinas.
It’s dark in here. Please open the curtains.
Excesso de Controle Remotos! Too Many Remote Controls!
Nowadays there are loads of gadgets in the typical living room. How many of these do you have? um computador a computer, WiFi WiFi, um relógio a clock, uma televisão a television, um equipamento de som a stereo, um rádio a radio, um alto-falante a speaker, um aparelho de DVD a DVD player, um modem a modem, um roteador a router, um controle remoto a remote control.
- Qual a senha do WiFi?
What’s your WiFi password? - Precisamos de uma televisão nova.
We need a new television. - Onde está o controle remoto da televisão?
Where’s the remote control for the television? - Nós temos um aparelho de DVD mas nunca usamos.
We have a DVD player, but we never use it. - Os alto-falantes são pequenos, mas o som é ótimo.
The speakers are small, but they sound great. - Preciso reiniciar o modem.
I need to restart the modem. - O relógio é uma antiguidade, mas ainda funciona!
The clock is an antique, but it still works!
Limpeza de Casa e Consertos Housework and Repairs
Like any room in the house, you’ve got to keep the living room clean. And sometimes, you may want to redecorate. Which brings us to: limpar to clean, arrumar to tidy up, um aspirador de pó a vacuum cleaner, passar o aspirador no chão to vacuum the floor, tirar o pó to dust, lavar os vidros das janelas to clean the windows, pintar to paint, arrumar / consertar to fix/repair, trocar to replace.
- A sala está uma bagunça. Precisamos arrumá-la antes dos convidados chegarem.
The living room is messy. We need to tidy up before our guests get here. - Preciso passar aspirador de pó no carpete.
I have to vacuum the carpet. - As estantes de livros estão empoeiradas. Preciso tirar pó delas.
The bookshelves are dusty! I need to dust them. - Os vidros estão sujos. Precisamos lavá-los.
The windows are dirty. We need to clean them. - Por favor, limpe a mesinha de centro com um papel toalha.
Please wipe the coffee table with a paper towel. - Quero pintar as paredes de uma cor diferente.
I want to paint the walls a different color. - O vaso está quebrado. Podemos consertá-lo?
The vase is broken. Can we repair it? - Aquelas cortinas estão bem velhas. Vamos trocá-las.
Those curtains are really old. Let’s replace them. - Há uma mancha grande no carpete.
There’s a big stain on the carpet.
Vamos assistir um filme. Let’s watch a film.
How do you use your living room?
- Assistimos TV todas as noites.
We watch television every evening. - Vamos sentar no sofá e conversar.
Let’s sit on the sofa and talk. - Eu sempre ponho os pés no puff e relaxo.
I always put my feet on the ottoman and relax. - Vamos assistir um filme hoje a noite.
Let’s watch a film tonight. - Há algo bom na TV / na Netflix?
Is there anything good on TV / Netflix? - Eu caí no sono lendo um livro na cadeira.
I fell asleep in the chair reading a book. - Estamos jogando baralho na mesa.
We’re playing cards at the table. - As crianças estão jogando video-games.
The kids are playing games on the computer. - Sente-se aqui, por favor. Você gostaria de uma taça de vinho?
Please sit here. Would you like a glass of wine? - Vamos acender umas velas e colocar uma música lenta para tocar.
Let’s put on candles and soft music. - Vou deitar no sofá e tirar uma soneca.
I’m going to lie down on the sofa and take a nap.
