In this post we’ll take a look at vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about one of the most important rooms in the house. We’re not talking about the kitchen, but you can check that out here. We mean o banheiro the bathroom. Or, if you’re talking more about a room with just the basics (toilet and sink): o lavabo.
Onde fica o banheiro? Where is the toilet?
If you’re visiting a city and doing a lot of sightseeing, chances are you’re going to need to use the toilet at some point. Which means you’ll need to know: o banheiro público public toilet; o mictório urinal; o banheiro masculino men’s room; o banheiro feminino ladies’ room.
- Há um banheiro público aqui por perto?
Is there a public toilet nearby? - Onde fica o banheiro masculino / o banheiro feminino?
Where’s the men’s room/ladies’ room? - Há banheiros públicos automáticos e com auto lavagem no parque.
There are automatic, self-cleaning public toilets in the park. - O banheiro público é grátis ou tenho que pagar?
Is the public toilet free or do I have to pay? - Por favor, pague com o servente.
Please pay the attendant. - O vaso sanitário está ocupado.
The toilet is occupied. - O vaso sanitário está em manutenção.
The toilet is out of order. - Estão limpando o vaso sanitário.
The toilet is being cleaned. - Há vasos sanitários / mictórios perto da saída.
There are toilets/urinals next to the exit.
Tomo banho todas as manhãs. I take a shower every morning.
Let’s start with some of the basics. In most bathrooms, you’ll find: uma ducha a shower, uma pia a sink, uma banheira a bathtub, uma privada a toilet, o papel higiênico toilet paper, um espelho a mirror, um armarinho / gabinete de remédio a vanity/medicine cabinet, uma toalha de banho a bath towel, uma toalha de mão a hand towel, um toalheiro towel rack.
- Estou tomando banho / uma ducha.
I’m taking a shower. (Uma ducha is literally a shower, but it’s more common for Brazilians to say banho.) - Estou sujo / suado. Preciso tomar um banho.
I’m dirty/sweaty. I need to take a shower. - Estou tomando um banho de banheira.
I’m taking a bath.
- Preciso lavar o meu rosto.
I need to wash my face. - A privada fica ao lado da banheira.
The toilet is next to the bathtub. - A pia do banheiro é pequena.
The bathroom sink is small. - Há um espelho acima da pia.
There’s a mirror above the sink. - A aspirina está dentro do armarinho / gabinete de remédios.
The aspirin is in the medicine cabinet. - Há uma toalha limpa pendura no toalheiro.
A clean towel is hanging on the towel rack. - Por favor, abaixe a tampa da privada.
Please close the toilet seat.
Estou lavando as mãos. I’m washing my hands.
A lot of what we do in the bathroom is related to washing and getting clean: o sabonete soap, o xampu shampoo, o condicionador conditioner, o desodorante deodorant, a pasta de dentes toothpaste, a escova de dentes toothbrush, a lâmina de barbear / a gilete razor, o creme de barbear shaving cream, o fio dental dental floss, o hidratante / o creme hidratante moisturizer/moisturizing cream, a escova (de cabelo) (hair)brush, o pente comb, o secador de cabelo blow dryer, a pinça tweezers, o cortador de unha / o trim (para os pés) toenail clipper.
- Eu preciso lavar minhas mãos.
I need to wash my hands. - Onde está o sabonete?
Where’s the soap? - Eu escovo os dentes e uso fio dental todas as noites.
I brush and floss my teeth every night. - Precisamos de mais pasta de dente.
We need more toothpaste. - Minha escova de dente é azul e a sua é branca
My toothbrush is blue, and your toothbrush is white. - Eu escovo/ penteio o cabelo em frente ao espelho.
I brush/comb my hair in front of the mirror. - Os pentes e as escovas estão na gaveta ao lado da pia.
The combs and brushes are in the drawer next to the sink. - Estamos sem xampu./ O xampu acabou.
We’re out of shampoo. - Você usa condicionador?
Do you use conditioner? - Eu faço a barba no chuveiro.
I shave in the shower. - Preciso comprar uma lâmina de barbear nova.
I need to buy a new razor. - Onde está o creme de barbear?
Where’s the shaving cream? - Este hidratante tem um aroma muito bom.
This moisturizer smells really good. - Uso desodorante natural.
I use a natural deodorant. - Onde está a pinça?
Where are the tweezers?
Perfume e Maquiagem Perfume and Make Up
Some people’s morning bathroom routines include more than the basics. If you’re one of those people, you may want to know: o perfume perfume, a colônia cologne, a maquiagem makeup, o rímel mascara, a sombra eye shadow, o delineador eyeliner, o pó compacto powder, o batom lipstick, o esmalte nail polish, o rouge / o blush blush/rouge, o gel para cabelo hair gel, o spray para cabelo hairspray.
- Você usa maquiagem?
Do you wear makeup? - Eu faço a maquiagem todas as manhãs.
I put on makeup every morning. - Eu gosto da sua colónia / do seu perfume. Tem um aroma / um cheiro bom.
I like your cologne/perfume. It smells nice. - Estou colocando rímel e delineador.
I’m putting on mascara and eyeliner. - Que cor de esmalte você tem?
What color nail polish do you have? - Uso gel no cabelo todos os dias.
I use hair gel every day. - Você tem spray para cabelo?
Do you have hairspray?
Posso usar seu banheiro? Can I use your bathroom?
Of course, we also take care of more basic biological needs in the bathroom, most of which you probably don’t need to know how to talk about. But here are a few, because you never know!
- Preciso ir ao banheiro.
I have to go to the bathroom. - Preciso urinar / defecar.
I have to urinate/defecate. - Preciso fazer xixi/ cocô.
I have to pee/poop. - Onde fica o banheiro?
Where’s the bathroom? - O banheiro fica no final do corredor à esquerda/à direita.
The bathroom is down the hall, to the left/right. - Não entre! Estou na privada.
Don’t come in! I’m on the toilet! - Acabou o papel higiênico.
There’s no toilet paper left! - Por favor, dê descarga.
Please flush the toilet. - A privada está entupida. Você tem um desentupidor?
The toilet is clogged. Do you have a plunger?
