In this post we’ll learn basic Portuguese vocabulary related to the human body.
O Meu Rosto My Face
Let’s start at the top, with words related to the head and face: a cabeça head, o rosto face, o olho / os olhos eye/ eyes, a sobrancelha / as sobrancelhas eye brow/ eye brows, os cílios eye lashes, o nariz nose, a boca mouth, o dente/ os dentes tooth/ teeth, o lábio / os lábios lip/ lips, a orelha / as orelhas ear/ ears, a bochecha / as bochechas cheek/ cheeks, a testa forehead, o queixo chin, o pescoço neck, o cabelo hair, o bigode mustache, a barba beard.
- Eu tenho olhos castanhos / azuis / verdes.
I have brown/blue/green eyes. - Não coma com a boca aberta!
Don’t eat with your mouth open! - Estou escovando os dentes.
I’m brushing my teeth.
- Ele tem orelhas grandes.
He has big ears. - Ela tem um nariz pequeno.
She has a small nose. - Eu não tenho barba, mas tenho bigode.
I don’t have a beard, but I have a mustache. - Ela tem cabelo bem comprido.
She has very long hair. - Meu pescoço está doendo.
My neck hurts.
Os Braços e As Mãos: Arms and Hands
Now let’s look at vocabulary related to everything from your arms to your finger tips: o braço / os braços arm/ arms, a mão / as mãos hand/ hands, o dedo / os dedos finger/ fingers, o cotovelo elbow, o pulso wrist, as unhas finger nails, a pele skin.
- Ele tem braços grandes.
He has big arms. - Você escreve com a mão esquerda ou com a mão direita?
Do you write with your left hand or your right hand? - Crianças sempre colocam os dedos na boca.
Children always put their fingers in their mouths. - Ele come as unhas.
He bites his finger nails. - Ela tem pele escura / clara.
She has dark/light skin. - Ai! Machuquei o meu cotovelo.
Ouch! I hurt my elbow.
Minhas costas estão doendo! My back hurts!
Now let’s look at: o peito chest, o seio / os seios breast/ breasts, o ombro / os ombros shoulder/ shoulders, a cintura waist, as costas back, a barriga belly, a bunda / o bumbum butt.
- Ele tem o peito malhado.
He has a muscular chest. - Ela vai fazer um exame mamário amanhã.
She’s getting a breast examination tomorrow. - Ela está com as costas doloridas.
She has a sore back. - Aquele cinto está apertado demais para a minha cintura.
That belt is too small for my waist. - Preciso comer menos. Minha barriga está ficando grande!
I need to eat less. My belly is getting big! - Ele tem ombros fortes.
He has strong shoulders. - Ai! Caí na minha bunda!
Ouch! I fell on my butt!
As Pernas Compridas Long Legs
Now let’s look at vocabulary related to your legs and feet. a perna / as pernas leg/ legs, a coxa / as coxas thigh/ thighs, o quadril / os quadris hip/ hips, o joelho / os joelhos knee/ knees, o pé / os pés foot/ feet, o tornozelo / os tornozelos ankle/ ankles, o dedo do pé / os dedos dos pés toe/ toes.
- Ela tem pernas compridas.
She has long legs. - Minhas coxas são grandes demais para essa calça.
My thighs are too big for these pants! - As lesões nos joelhos doem muito.
Knee injuries are painful. - Eu torci meu tornozelo.
I twisted my ankle. - Os pés delas são muito pequenos.
Her feet are very small. - Machuquei meu dedo do pé.
I hurt my toe.
Os Órgãos Internos Internal Organs
Now let’s look at some basic vocabulary for internal organs: o coração heart, o pulmão / os pulmões lung/ lungs, o cérebro brain, a garganta throat, o estômago stomach, os intestinos intestines, o fígado liver, o rim kidney, o sangue blood, a veia vein, a artéria artery, o osso bone, o músculo muscle, os nervos nerves.
- O coração bombeia sangue através das artérias e veias.
The heart pumps blood through arteries and veins. - Nossos pulmões se enchem de ar quando respiramos.
Our lungs fill with air when breathe. - O cérebro e os nervos fazem parte do sistema nervoso.
The brain and nerves are part of the nervous system. - O meu estômago está vazio / cheio.
My stomach is empty/full. - Ela precisa de um transplante de rim.
She needs a kidney transplant. - O fígado dele não está saudável porque ele bebe demais.
His liver is not healthy because he drinks too much. - Precisamos de cálcio para nossos ossos.
We need calcium for our bones. - Os intestinos fazem parte do sistema digestivo.
The intestines are part of the digestive system. - Os músculos das minhas pernas estão doloridos depois que corri.
My leg muscles are sore after I run.
