It’s o inverno (winter) in the northern hemisphere, which means that in many places está muito frio (it’s very cold). In this post we’ll learn some Portuguese vocabulary for talking about cold winter weather.
Está Frio Lá Fora! It’s Cold Outside!
Let’s start with some basic expressions that will help you talk about cold winter weather.
- Está frio.
It’s cold. - Está congelando!
It’s freezing! - Está nevando.
It’s snowing.
- Está chovendo com neve.
It’s sleeting. - Está frio e ventando.
It’s cold and windy. - A neve é linda!
The snow is beautiful. - Vamos ter uma tempestade de neve esta semana.
We’re going to have a blizzard this week. - O lago está congelado.
The lake is frozen. - A neve está derretendo.
The snow is melting. - Estou tremendo de frio!
I’m shivering!

Let’s make a snowman. - Eu vou esquiar este fim de semana.
I’m going skiing this weekend. - Vamos andar de trenó.
Let’s go sledding. - Vamos patinar no gelo.
Let’s go ice skating. - Eu gosto de praticar snowboard.
I like snowboarding. - Que tal uma luta com bolas de neve!
Let’s have a snowball fight! - A criançada está construindo um forte de neve.

Odeio o Inverno! I Hate the Winter!
Of course, winter isn’t all fun and games.
- Odeio a neve.
I hate the snow. - Tenho que tirar a neve da entrada de carros.
I have to shovel the driveway. - As estradas estão com gelo e perigosas.
The roads are icy and dangerous. - Eu escorreguei na calçada.
I slipped on the sidewalk. - Eu não gosto de tempo frio!
I don’t like cold weather! - Sinto saudade do sol.
I miss the sun. - O clima de inverno é deprimente.

Roupas de Inverno: Winter Clothes
If you have to go outside, you need to dress appropriately. You’ll probably wear: um casaco de inverno (a winter coat), um chapéu (a hat), um cachecol (a scarf), as luvas (gloves), as mitenes (mittens), as botas (boots).
- Preciso de um chapéu e luvas hoje.
I need a hat and gloves today. - Esse casaco não é quente o suficiente!
This coat isn’t heavy enough! - Você tem botas à prova d ‘água?
Do you have waterproof boots? - Estou usando uma malha de lã e um casaco.
I’m wearing a sweater and a coat.
Noites Aconchegantes e Tranquilas: Cozy, Quiet Evenings
But inside, you can still feel quente e aconchegante (warm and cozy). You can sit next to um fogo (a fire), and maybe enjoy uma xícara de chá (a cup of tea) or better yet, uma xícara de chocolate quente (a cup of hot chocolate). Just get um cobertor (a blanket), maybe um bom livro (a good book), and you’re ready to make the most out of os dias frios e as noites compridas (the cold days and long nights). It’s only a few more months until the spring!

It’s warm and cozy in the house. - Vamos acender a lareira.
Let’s make a fire in the fireplace. - Vamos tomar chocolate quente em frente à lareira.
Let’s have hot chocolate in front of the fire. - Estou me aquecendo em frente à lareira.
I’m warming up next to the fire. - Você tem um cobertor?
Do you have a blanket? - Eu vou para cama cedo no inverno.
I go to bed early in the winter.
