When fall is here, it’s a good time to look at some vocabulary and expressions that will come in handy to talk about the weather, the colors, and the warm, cozy nights.
As Cores: Colors
As folhas leaves and as cores lindas beautiful colors are probably two of the first things that you think about when you think of fall. As folhas vermelhas red leaves, as folhas cor de laranja orange leaves, as folhas amarelas yellow leaves, as folhas douradas gold leaves are everywhere at first, and then as folhas marrons caem no chão brown leaves fall to the ground. Here is some leaf-peeping vocabulary in Portuguese.
- As folhas estão mudando de cor.
The leaves are changing color. - As árvores ficam lindas nessa época do ano.
The trees are beautiful this time of year. - Toda a encosta está dourada.
The whole hillside is gold. - As folhas estão caindo das árvores.
The leaves are falling off the trees.
Está ficando mais frio. It’s getting colder.
Tempo friozinho (cool weather) is probably the other thing that you first think of when you think of fall. If you live in a place where the seasons change a lot, you may want to say:
- O tempo está friozinho.
The weather is cool. - Está chuvoso e nublado..
It’s rainy and cloudy. - Os dias estão frescos e as noites estão frias.
The days are chilly and the nights are cold. - O vento está levando as folhas.
The wind is blowing the leaves. - O céu está cinza.
The sky is gray.
Os dias estão ficando mais curtos. The days are getting shorter.
With shorter fall days, you may want to say:
- Quando ocorre a mudança para o horário de verão?
When is daylight savings time? - Você se lembrou de atrasar o relógio?
Did you remember to turn your clock back? - Fica escuro cedo.
It gets dark early. - O sol se põe cedo.
The sun sets early. - Há menos luz do sol.
There’s less sunlight.
Roupas de outono: Autumn clothes
All of these fall changes probably mean a change in your wardrobe, too.
- Eu não preciso mais dos meus shorts e das minhas camisetas.
I don’t need my shorts and tee shirts. - Estou vestindo uma malha de lã.
I’m putting on a sweater. - Preciso usar uma jaqueta.
I need to wear a jacket. - Preciso usar um chapéu e uma capa de chuva.
I need to wear a hat and a raincoat. - Onde está o meu guarda-chuva?
Where’s my umbrella? - Vamos colocar um cobertor a mais na cama.
Let’s put an extra blanket on the bed.
Noites Calmas e Quietas: Calm, Quiet Evenings
Many people find fall to be the most relaxing season, and other people find it to be a bit sad.
- Vou ficar em casa hoje à noite.
I’m staying in tonight. - Vou ler um livro hoje à noite.
I’m reading a good book tonight. - Vou tomar uma xícara de chá.
I’m drinking a cup of tea. - Vou para a cama mais cedo no outono.
I go to bed earlier in the fall. - Fico sempre triste no outono.
I always get sad in the fall. - Tenho saudades do sol e dos dias compridos do verão.
I miss the sun and the long days of summer. - O outono me deprime.
Fall depresses me. - Amo o outono, é a minha estação preferida.
I love fall, it’s my favorite season! - Eu não gosto do outono, é escuro, frio e deprimente.
I don’t like fall, it’s dark and cold and depressing.
