O verão chegou! Summer is here!
Summer is right around the corner, so let’s look at some Portuguese vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about the beautiful weather, outdoor activities, and, of course, the beach!
O tempo está lindo. The weather is beautiful.
For many people, the weather is the greatest thing about summer. So, let’s give you some expressions you can use.
- O tempo está lindo hoje.
The weather is beautiful today. - O sol está brilhando.
The sun is shining. - Não há nuvens no céu.
There are no clouds in the sky.
- Há uma brisa agradável.
There’s a nice breeze. - O ar está fresco.
The air is fresh. - É um dia perfeito.
It’s a perfect day.
Está quente demais! It’s too hot!
Of course, not everyone loves summer weather. If you’re one of those people, you may want to say something like:
- Está quente demais hoje.
It’s too hot today. - Está muito úmido.
It’s very humid. - (Eu) Estou transpirando.
I’m sweating. - Ligue o ar-condicionado!
Put the air-conditioner on!
Vamos lá fora! Let’s go outside!
When the weather is nice in the summer, you’ll hopefully have a chance to take advantage of it and get outside. Whether you like atividades ao ar livre relaxantes relaxing outdoor activities or esportes sports, there’s usually something for everyone in the summer.
- Vamos dar um passeio a pé.
Let’s go for a walk. - (Eu) Quero ir ao parque.
I want to go to the park. - Vamos nos sentar e ver o pôr do sol.
Let’s sit and watch the sunset. - Vamos fazer um piquenique este fim de semana.
We’re having a picnic this weekend. - Vamos passear de bicicleta.
Let’s go for a bike ride. - Vamos fazer uma caminhada nas montanhas.
Let’s go for a hike in the mountains. - Vamos jogar tênis.
Let’s play tennis. - Vamos jogar basquete / bola ao cesto.
Let’s play basketball. - Vamos jogar futebol.
Let’s play soccer. - Vamos jogar beisebol.
Let’s play baseball. - Quero ir correr.
I want to go for a run. - Nós vamos escalar pedras.
We’re going rock climbing.
Vamos à praia. Let’s go to the beach.
The beach is a favorite summer destination. If you’re going, you’ll probably want to know these words: o maiô a woman’s swimsuit, o calção de banho a man’s swimsuit, a toalha a towel, os óculos de sol / os óculos escuros sunglasses, o protetor solar sunscreen, um bom livro a good book, uma prancha de surfe a surfboard. Here are some things you may see at the beach: o mar the ocean, uma onda a wave, a areia sand, conchas do mar seashells, um farol a lighthouse, uma gaivota a seagull, um caranguejo a crab, uma água-viva a jellyfish, uma estrela do mar a starfish, um peixe a fish, um tubarão a shark, um golfinho a dolphin, um barco a boat, o calçadão the boardwalk, uma sorveteria an ice cream shop.
Some other expressions that will come in handy are:
- (Eu) Quero me deitar ao sol.
I want to lie in the sun. - Vamos nadar.
Let’s go swimming. - (Eu) Estou ficando bronzeado/a.
I’m getting a sun tan. - Fiquei queimado/a do sol.
I got a sun burn. - Vamos construir um castelo de areia.
Let’s build a sandcastle. - Vamos brincar nas ondas.
Let’s play in the waves. - Vamos procurar conchas do mar.
Let’s look for seashells. - Quero um sorvete.
I want ice cream.
Uma Noite Tranquila de Verão A Quiet Summer Night
O sol se põe tarde no verão. The sun sets late in the summer, but there’s nothing like a nice summer night, whether you’re having drinks outside with your friends, or you’re just sitting and listening to nature.
- Vamos nos sentar lá fora.
Let’s sit outside. - A noite está fresca.
The night is cool. - (Eu) Ouço grilos.
I hear crickets. - (Eu) Vejo vaga-lumes.
I see lightning bugs. - A brisa sopra entre as árvores.
The breeze is blowing through the trees. - A lua está nascendo.
The moon is rising. - Amanhã será mais um lindo dia.
Tomorrow will be another beautiful day.
