Na escola (At school): Portuguese School Vocabulary
In this post, we’ll learn some Portuguese school vocabulary. We’ll start with some general vocabulary related to schools. Next, we’ll move on to Portuguese school vocabulary for the classroom and for homework and tests. Then we’ll learn vocabulary to talk about school subjects. Finally, we’ll look at vocabulary related to college and university.
Qual o nome da sua escola? What’s the name of your school?
Lets start with some basic vocabulary.
- a escola
school - a escola primária, a escola secundária, a universidade
primary school, high school, university - o aluno/a aluna, o professor / a professora
student, teacher, professor
- Ela é aluna da escola secundária.
She’s a high school student. - Ele frequenta a escola primária.
He goes to primary school. - Em que ano ele/ela está?
What grade is he in/she in? - O que você está estudando na universidade?
What are you studying at university?

Here’s some vocabulary to help you talk about the classroom.
- a sala de aula, a escrivaninha do(a) aluno(a), a estante de livros, o caderno
classroom, student’s desk, bookshelf, notebook - a mesa do(da) professor(a), a lousa, o quadro branco, o mapa, o globo
teacher’s desk, blackboard, whiteboard, map, globe - o caderno, o papel, o lápis, a caneta, e borracha
notebook, paper, pencil, pen, eraser - o tablet, a tela, a calculadora
tablet, screen, calculator - Essa sala de aula é grande/ pequena.
This classroom is big/small. - O(A) professor(a) escreve no quadro branco.
The teacher writes on the whiteboard. - O(A) aluno(a) toma notas.
The students take notes. - Os alunos escutam o(a) professor(a).
The students listen to the teacher. - Os(As) alunos(as) prestam atenção ao professor / à professora.
The students pay attention to the teacher. - Eu tenho uma dúvida.
I have a question. - O(A) professor(a) responde às dúvidas dos alunos/das alunas.
The teacher answers the students’ questions. - O(A) professor(a) ensina. Os(as) alunos(as) aprendem.
The teacher teaches. The students learn.

If you’re in primary school or high school, you probably have a lot of opportunity to say things like:
- Nós temos uma prova amanhã.
We have a test tomorrow. - Estou fazendo uma prova.
I’m taking a test. - Eu tenho que estudar.
I have to study. - Eu tenho muita lição de casa.
I have a lot of homework. - Eu tenho que decorar o vocabulário novo.
I have to memorize new vocabulary. - Eu faço a lição de casa toda noite.
I do homework every night. - Eu tirei uma nota boa / ruim na prova.
I got a good/bad grade on the test. - Eu passei/ repeti de ano.

I’m doing well/getting good grades in biology. - Qual a matéria que você menos gosta?
What’s your least favorite subject? - Não gosto de matemática.
I don’t like math. - Sou ruim de ciência.
I’m bad at science. - Não entendo química.
I don’t understand chemistry. - Estou indo mal / tirando notas ruins em física.
I’m doing poorly/getting bad grades in physics.
Na universidade At university
If you’re um (uma) aluno(a) universitario(a) a university student, you’ll probably have a chance to use this vocabulary.

lecture, seminar - o auditório, a sala de aula, o laboratório
auditorium, lecture hall, laboratory - Eu tenho aula hoje.
I have class today. - Eu não tenho aula hoje a tarde.
I don’t have class this afternoon. - Eu estudo na biblioteca.
I study in the library. - Estou fazendo uma pesquisa.
I’m doing research. - Estou escrevendo um trabalho de pesquisa.
I’m writing a research paper. - Estou fazendo uma experiência.

I’m writing my thesis. - Moro em um dormitório.
