En la escuela (At school): Spanish School Vocabulary

In this post, we’ll learn some Spanish school vocabulary. We’ll start with some general vocabulary related to schools. Next, we’ll move on to Spanish school vocabulary for the classroom and for homework and tests. Then we’ll learn vocabulary to talk about school subjects. Finally, we’ll look at vocabulary related to college and university.

¿A qué escuela vas? Where do you go to school?

First, lets start with some basic vocabulary.

• la escuela, el colegio
  school
• la escuela primaria, la escuela secundaria/el bachillerato, la universidad
  primary school, high school, university
• el/la estudiante, el profesor/la profesora
  student, teacher, professor

• Es una estudiante de bachillerato/de secundaria.
  She’s a high school student.
• Está en la escuela primaria.
  He goes/She goes to primary school.
• ¿En qué grado está él/ella?
  What grade is he in/she in?
• ¿Qué estás estudiando en la universidad?
  What are you studying at university?

Next let’s move on to some vocabulary to help you talk about the classroom.

Now let’s turn to homework and tests. If you’re in primary school or high school, you probably have a lot of opportunity to say things like:

• Mañana tenemos un examen.
  We have a test tomorrow.
• Voy a hacer un examen.
  I’m taking a test.
• Tengo que estudiar.
  I have to study.
• Tengo muchos deberes / mucha tarea.
  I have a lot of homework.
• Tengo que memorizar el vocabulario nuevo.
  I have to memorize new vocabulary.
• Todas las noches hago mis deberes/mi tarea.
  I do homework every night.
• Salí bien/mal en el examen. Saqué una buena/mala calificación en el examen.
  I got a good/bad grade on the test.

Finally, let’s learn some Spanish school vocabulary for college and university. If you’re  un estudiante universitario/ una estudiante universitaria university student, you’ll probably have a chance to use this vocabulary.

• el auditorio, la sala de conferencias, el laboratorio
  auditorium, lecture hall, laboratory
• Hoy tengo clases.
  I have class today.
• Esta tarde no tengo clases.
  I don’t have class this afternoon.
• Estudio en la biblioteca.
  I study in the library.
• Estoy investigando.
  I’m doing research.
• Estoy escribiendo un artículo (de investigación).
  I’m writing a research paper.
• Estoy haciendo un experimento.
