It’s зима (winter) in the northern hemisphere, which means that in many places очень холодно (it’s very cold). In this post we’ll learn some Russian vocabulary for talking about cold winter weather.

На Улице Холодно! It’s Cold Outside!

Let’s start with some basic expressions that will help you talk about cold winter weather.

• Холодно.
  It’s cold.
• Морозит! / Подмораживает!
  It’s freezing!
• Идёт снег.
  It’s snowing.

• Идёт мокрый снег.
  It’s sleeting.
• Холодно и ветрено.
  It’s cold and windy.
• Снег красив.
  The snow is beautiful.
• На этой неделе у нас будет метель.
  We’re going to have a blizzard this week.
• Озеро замёрзло. 
  The lake is frozen.
• Снег тает. 
  The snow is melting.
• Меня колотит! / Я дрожу от холода!
  I’m shivering!

Я Люблю Зиму. I Love the Winter.

Not everyone hates the snow. If you’re a kid, or a kid at heart, you may enjoy some fun winter activities.

• Я люблю снег. 
  I love the snow.
• Давай(те) сделаем снеговика. 
  Let’s make a snowman.
• Я еду кататься на лыжах в эти выходные.
  I’m going skiing this weekend.
• Поехали / пошли кататься на санках.
  Let’s go sledding.
• Поехали / пошли кататься на коньках.
  Let’s go ice skating.
• Мне нравится кататься на сноуборде.
  I like snowboarding.
• Давай(те) поиграем в снежки!
  Let’s have a snowball fight!
• Ребята строят снежное укрепление / форт.
  The kids are building a snow fort.

Я Ненавижу Зиму. I Hate the Winter.

Of course, winter isn’t all fun and games.

• Я ненавижу снег.
  I hate the snow.
• Мне надо убирать снег с дорожки.  
  I have to shovel the driveway.
• Дороги покрыты льдом и опасны.
  The roads are icy and dangerous.
• Я поскользнулся на тротуаре.
  I slipped on the sidewalk.
• Мне не нравится холодная погода!
  I don’t like cold weather!
• Я скучаю по солнцу.
  I miss the sun.
• Зимняя погода удручающа.
  Winter weather is depressing.

Зимняя Одежда Winter Clothes

If you have to go outside, you need to dress appropriately. You’ll probably wear: зимнее пальто (a winter coat), шапка (a hat), шарф (a scarf), перчатки (gloves), варежки (mittens), ботинки (boots).

• Сегодня мне нужны шапка и перчатки.
  I need a hat and gloves today.
• Это пальто недостаточно тёплое.
  This coat isn’t heavy enough!
• У тебя / вас есть непромокаемые ботинки?
  Do you have waterproof boots?
• На мне свитер и пальто.
  I’m wearing a sweater and a coat.

Уютные тихие вечера Cozy, Quiet Evenings

But inside, you can still feel тепло и уютно (warm and cozy). You can sit next to огонь (a fire), and maybe enjoy чашка чая (a cup of tea) or better yet, чашка горячего шоколада (a cup of hot chocolate). Just get одеяло (a blanket), maybe хорошая книга / книжка (a good book), and you’re ready to make the most out of холодные дни и длинные ночи (the cold days and long nights). It’s only a few more months until the spring!

• В доме тепло и уютно.
  It’s warm and cozy in the house.
• Давай(те) раззожём огонь в камине.
  Let’s make a fire in the fireplace.
• Давай(те) выпьем горячего шоколада перед огнём. 
  Let’s have hot chocolate in front of the fire.
• Я греюсь около огня.
  I’m warming up next to the fire.
• У тебя / вас есть одеяло?
  Do you have a blanket?
• Я рано ложусь спать зимой.
  I go to bed early in the winter.
