In this post we’ll take a look at Japanese vocabulary, expressions, and grammar related to talking about what you like, what you find interesting, and what you’re really into doing.
チョコレートが好きです。 Chokorēto ga suki desu. I like chocolate.
If you’re talking about things or people that you like, use the construction 好きです suki desu. Remember to mark the thing that you like with the particle –が –ga.
- ｛チョコレート・バニラ｝が好きです。
{ Chokorēto/Banira} ga suki desu.
I like chocolate/vanilla. - ｛本・映画｝が好きです。
{Hon/Ēga} ga suki desu.
I like books/movies.
- タイ料理が好きですか。
Tai ryōri ga suki desu ka.
Do you like Thai food? - ｛きのこ・たまねぎ・にんにく｝が好きです。
{Kinoko/Tamanegi/Nin’niku} ga suki desu.
He likes mushrooms/onion/garlic. - この歌が好きです。
Kono uta ga suki desu.
She likes this song. - 子供たちは新しい先生が好きです。
Kodomo tachi wa atarashī sensē ga suki desu.
The kids like their new teacher. - この歌手が好きです。[Name]さんはこの歌手が好きですか。
Kono kashu ga suki desu. [Name]san wa kono kashu ga suki desu ka.
I like this singer. Do you like this singer? - ｛お兄さん(older brother)・弟さん(younger brother)・お姉さん(older sister)・妹さん(younger sister)・お友達｝はいい人ですね。
{Onīsan (older brother)/Otōtosan (younger brother)/Onēsan (older sister)/Imōtosan (younger sister)/Otomodachi} wa ī hito desu ne.
I like your brother/sister/friend. (lit: … is a nice person)
猫より犬の方が好きです。 Neko yori inu no hō ga suki desu. I like dogs more than cats.
If you want to say that you like A more than B, use the verb ～のほうがいいです。 …no hō ga ī desu. to prefer, or YよりXの方が好きです。Y yori X no hō ga suki desu. to like X more than Y. Notice that Y comes first in the Japanese!
- チョコレートの方がいいです。
Chokorēto no hō ga ī desu.
I prefer chocolate. - バニラよりチョコレートの方が好きです。
Banira yori chokorēto no hō ga suki desu.
I like chocolate more than vanilla. - 猫より犬の方が好きです。
Neko yori inu no hō ga suki desu.
I like dogs more than cats. - 犬の方がいいです。
Inu no hō ga ī desu.
I prefer dogs. - パスタよりピザの方が好きです。
Pasuta yori piza no hō ga suki desu.
We like pizza more than pasta. - タイ料理の方がいいです。
Tai ryōri no hō ga ī desu.
We prefer Thai food.
料理をするのが好きです。 Ryōri o suruno ga suki desu. I like to cook.
The construction …が好きです … ga suki desu can also be used to talk about what you like to do. The action that you like will be in the infinitive or a nominalized (noun-ified) form.
- ｛読書をする・旅行をする・テレビを見る｝のが好きです。
{Dokusho o suru/Ryokō o suru/Terebi o miru} no ga suki desu.
I like to read/travel/watch TV. - 外国語を勉強するのが好きです。
Gaikokugo o benkyō suru no ga suki desu.
I like to learn foreign languages. - ｛自転車に乗る・泳ぐ・ハイキングをする｝のが好きです。
{Jitensha ni noru/Oyogu/Haikingu o suru} no ga suki desu.
I like to ride my bike/swim/go hiking. - 朝、運動するのが好きです。
Asa undo suru no ga suki desu.
She likes to work out in the morning. - 日曜日に遅くまで寝ているのが好きです。
Nichiyōbi ni osoku made neteiru no ga suki desu.
He likes to sleep late on Sundays. - 一緒に映画を見るのが好きです。
Issho ni ēga o miru no ga suki desu.
We like to watch movies together. - 政治について議論するのが好きです。
Sēji ni tsuite giron suru no ga suki desu.
They like to argue about politics. - 何をするのが好きですか。
Nani o suru no ga suki desu ka.
What do you like to do? - どこに旅行に行きたいですか。
Doko ni ryokō ni ikitai desu ka.
Where do you like to go on vacation? - どんな映画を見るのが好きですか。
Don’na ēga o miru no ga suki desu ka.
What kind of movies do you like to watch? - どんな食べ物が好きですか。
Don’na tabemono ga suki desu ka.
What kind of food do you like?
SFが大好きです。 Esu efu ga daisuki desu. I love science fiction.
If you really like or love something, use the construction …が大好きです …ga daisuki desu.
- ｛犬・猫・動物｝が大好きです。
{Inu/Neko/Dōbutsu} ga daisuki desu.
I love/really like dogs/cats/animals. - ｛暖かい気候・雪｝が大好きです。
{Atatakai kikō/Yuki} ga daisuki desu.
I love/really like warm weather/snow. - エチオピア料理が大好きです。
Echiopia ryōri ga daisuki desu.
I love/really like Ethiopian food. - クラシック音楽が大好きです。
Kurashikku ongaku ga daisuki desu.
He loves/really like classical music. - ゲームが大好きです。
Gēmu ga daisuki desu.
She loves/really like video games.
この新しいレストランにはまっています。 Kono atarashī resutoran ni hamatte imasu. I’m mad about this new restaurant.
Some idiomatic expressions that you can use to talk about what you really like are … にはまっています。 …ni hamatte imasu. (to be stuck on…) or …に夢中です。 …ni muchū desu. (to be in your dreamland with…)
- この｛店・レストラン｝にはまっています。
Kono {mise/resutoran} ni hamatte imasu.
I’m mad about this store/restaurant. (“I am stuck on this store/restaurant.”) - 新しい車に夢中です。
Atarashī kuruma ni muchū desu.
She’s nuts about her new car. (“She’s in her dream land with her new car.”) - ｛ハイキング・スキー・ランニング｝にはまっています。
{Haiking/Sukī/Ran’ningu} ni hamatte imasu.
He’s really into hiking/skiing/running. (“He is stuck with hiking/skiing/running.”) - キャンプにはまっています。
Kyanpu ni hamatte imasu.
I’m really into camping. (“I am stuck on camping.”) - 夢中です。
Baiku ni muchū desu.
He’s crazy about motorcycles. (“He is in his dream land with motorcycles.”)
母を愛しています。 Haha o aishite imasu. I love my mother.
To talk about loving a person in a non-romantic way, use the verb 愛する aisuru or the expression 大好きです daisuki desu.
- ｛母・父｝を愛しています。
{Haha/Chichi} o aishite imasu.
I love my mother/father. - 孫を愛しています。
Mago o aishite imasu.
They love their grandchildren. - ｛お姉さん・妹さん｝を愛しています。
{Onēsan/Imōtosan} o aishite imasu.
He loves his sister. - 友達のことが大好きです。
Tomodachi no koto ga daisuki desu.
She loves her friends.
好きです。/ 愛しています。 Suki desu. / Aishite imasu. I love you.
The verb 愛する aisuru can also be used to express romantic love.
- 愛しています。
Aishite imasu.
I love you. - 妻を愛しています。
Tsuma o aishite imasu.
I love my wife. - 夫を愛しています。
Otto o aishite imasu.
I love my husband. - とても愛し合っています。
Totemo aishi atte imasu.
They love each other very much.
言葉は面白いです。 Kotoba wa omoshiroi desu. Languages are interesting.
There are all sorts of other ways to express that you like something.
- この本はとてもいい本です。
Kono hon wa totemo ī hon desu.
This book is really good/cool. - 言葉は面白いです。
Kotoba wa omoshiroi desu.
Languages are interesting. - ｛本・言葉・映画｝は面白いと思います。
{Hon/Kotoba/Ēga} wa omoshiroi to omoimasu.
I think that books/languages/films are interesting. - 映画より本の方が面白いと思います。
Ēga yori hon no hō ga omoshiroi to omoimasu.
I think that books are more interesting than films. - スキーは楽しいです。 スキーは楽しいと思います。
Sukī wa tanoshī desu. Sukī wa tanoshī to omoimasu.
Skiing is exciting. I think skiing is exciting. - 旅行は素晴らしいです。 旅行は素晴らしいと思います。
Ryokō wa subarashī desu. Ryokō wa subarashī to omoimasu.
Traveling is fascinating. I think traveling is fascinating. - 自転車に乗るのは楽しいです。
Jitensha ni noru no wa tanoshī desu.
Biking is fun. I really enjoy biking. - 映画は面白いです。
Ēga wa omoshiroi desu.
Films are entertaining/interesting. - この作家はとてもいい作家です。著書は素晴らしいです。
Kono sakka wa totemo ī sakka desu. Chosho wa subarashī desu.
This writer is amazing. Her books are incredible. - このレストランはとてもいいレストランです。とてもおいしいです。
Kono resutoran wa totemo ī resutoran desu. Totemo oishī desu.
This restaurant is great. The food here is exquisite/delicious.
