人の体 hito no karada: The Human Body in Japanese

In this post we’ll learn basic Japanese vocabulary related to the human body.

私の顔 watashi no kao My Face

Let’s start at the top, with words related to the head and face: 頭 atama head, 顔 kao face, 目 me eye/ eyes, 眉毛 mayuge eye brow/ eye brows, まつ毛 matsuge eye lashes, 鼻 hana nose, 口 kuchi mouth, 歯 ha tooth/ teeth, 唇 kuchibiru lip/ lips, 耳 mimi ear/ ears, 頬 hō cheek/ cheeks, 額 hitai , おでこ  odeko forehead (fml, infml), 顎 ago chin, 首 kubi neck, 髪、髪の毛 kami, kaminoke hair, ひげ、口ひげ hige, kuchihige mustache, ひげ、顎ひげ hige, agohige beard.

  • 私は目が{茶色い、青い、緑}です。
    Watashi wa me ga {chairoi/aoi/midori} desu.

    I have brown/blue/green eyes.
  • 口を開けたまま食べないで!
    Kuchi o aketa mama tabenaide!

    Don’t eat with your mouth open!
  • 歯を磨いています。
    Ha o migaite imasu.

    I’m brushing my teeth.

  • 耳が大きいです。
    Mimi ga ōkī desu.

    He has big ears.
  • 鼻が小さいです。
    Hana ga chīsai desu.

    She has a small nose.
  • 顎ひげはありませんが、口ひげはあります。
    Agohige wa arimasen ga, kuchihige wa arimasu.

    I don’t have a beard, but I have a mustache.
  • 髪がとても長いです。
    Kami ga totemo nagai desu.

    She has very long hair.
  • 首が痛いです。
    Kubi ga itai desu.
    My neck hurts.

腕と手 ude to te  Arms and Hands

Now let’s look at vocabulary related to everything from your arms to your finger tips: 腕 ude arm/ arms, 手 te hand/ hands, 指 yubi finger/ fingers, 肘 hiji elbow, 手首 tekubi wrist, 爪 tsume finger nails, 肌 hada skin.

  • 腕が太いです。
    Ude ga futoi desu.

    He has big arms.
  • 左手で書きますか。それとも右手で書きますか。
    Hidarite de kakimasu ka. Soretomo migite de kakimasu ka.

    Do you write with your left hand or your right hand?
  • 子供はいつも指を口に入れます。
    Kodomo wa itsumo yubi o kuchi ni iremasu.

    Children always put their fingers in their mouths.
  • 爪を噛む癖があります。
    Tsume o kamu kuse ga arimasu.

    He bites his finger nails.
  • 肌が{黒い・白い}です。
    Hada ga {kuroi/shiroi} desu.

    She has dark/light skin.
  • 痛い!肘を痛めました。
    Itai! Hiji o itamemashita.
    Ouch! I hurt my elbow.

腰が痛いです! Koshi ga itai desu! My back hurts!

Now let’s look at: 胸 mune chest, breast/ breasts, 肩 kata shoulder/ shoulders, ウエスト uesuto waist, 背中、腰 senaka, koshi back, おへそ oheso belly, お尻 oshiri butt.

  • 筋肉質の胸をしています。
    Kin’nikushitsu no mune o shite imasu.

    He has a muscular chest.
  • 明日、乳がん検診を受けます。
    Ashita, ny
    ūgan kenshin o ukemasu.
    She’s getting a breast cancer examination tomorrow.
  • 腰が痛いです。
    Koshi ga itai desu.

    She has a sore back.
  • ベルトがきつくなってきました。
    Beruto ga kitsukunatte kimashita.

    That belt is too small for my waist.
  • 食べる量を減らさなければいけません。お腹が出てきました!
    Taberu ry
    ō o herasanakereba ikemasen. Onaka ga dete kimashita!
    I need to eat less. My belly is getting big!
  • 肩が強いです。
    Kata ga tsuyoi desu.
    He has strong shoulders.
  • 痛い!尻もちをつきました!
    Itai! Shirimochi o tsukimashita!
    Ouch! I fell on my butt!

長い脚 nagai ashi  Long Legs

Now let’s look at vocabulary related to your legs and feet. 脚 ashi leg/ legs, 腿 momo thigh/ thighs, 腰 koshi hip/ hips, 膝 hiza knee/ knees, 足 ashi foot/ feet, 足首 ashikubi ankle/ ankles, 足の指 ashi no yubi toe/ toes.

  • 脚が長いです。
    Ashi ga nagai desu.

    She has long legs.
  • 腿が太すぎて、このパンツは履けません!
    Momo ga futosugite, kono pantsu wa hakemasen!

    My thighs are too big for these pants!
  • 膝の怪我は痛いです。
    Hiza no kega wa itai desu.

    Knee injuries are painful.
  • 足首を捻挫しました。
    Ashikubi o nenza shimashita.

    I twisted my ankle.
  • 足がとても小さいです。
    Ashi ga totemo ch
    īsai desu.
    Her feet are very small.
  • 足の指を痛めました。
    Ashi no yubi o itamemashita.
    I hurt my toe.

内臓 naizō Internal Organs

Now let’s look at some basic vocabulary for internal organs: 心臓 shinzō heart, 肺 hai lung/ lungs, 脳 nō brain, 喉 nodo throat, 胃、お腹 i, onaka stomach, 腸 chō intestines, 肝臓 kanzō liver, 腎臓 jinzō kidney, 血、血液 chi, ketsueki blood, 静脈 jōmyaku vein, 動脈 dōmyaku artery, 骨 hone bone, 筋肉 kin’niku muscle, 神経 shinkē nerves.

  • 心臓は、動脈と静脈を通して血液を送ります。
    Shinzō wa, dōmyaku to jōmyaku o tōshite ketsueki o okurimasu.

    The heart pumps blood through arteries and veins. 
  • 呼吸をする時、肺は空気で一杯になります。
    Kokyū o suru toki, hai wa kūki de ippai ni narimasu.

    Our lungs fill with air when breathe.
  • 脳と神経は神経系の一部です。
    Nō to shinkē wa shinkēkē no ichibu desu.
    The brain and nerves are part of the nervous system.
  • お腹が{空っぽ・一杯}です。
    Onaka ga {karappo/ippai} desu.
    My stomach is empty/full.
  • 腎臓移植をしなければいけません。
    Jinzō ishoku o shinakereba ikemasen.
    She needs a kidney transplant.
  • 飲み過ぎるので、肝臓がよくありません。
    Nomisugiru node, kanzō ga yoku arimasen.
    His liver is not healthy because he drinks too much.
  • 骨のためにカルシウムが必要です。
    Hone no tame ni karushiumu ga hitsuyō desu.
    We need calcium for our bones.
  • 腸は消化器系の一部です。
    Chō wa shōkakikē no ichibu desu.
    The intestines are part of the digestive system. 
  • 走った後、脚が筋肉痛になります。
    Hashitta ato, ashi ga kin’nikutsū ni narimasu.
    My leg muscles are sore after I run.
