In this post we’re going to talk about Japanese vocabulary and expressions related to books and reading. Let’s start with the basics.

毎晩読書をします。 Maiban dokusho o shimasu. I read every night
Whether you read a lot or a little, you may want to say:
- 読書は私の一番の趣味です。
Dokusho wa watashi no ichiban no shumi desu.
Reading is my favorite hobby. - いつも本を持ち歩いています。
Itsumo hon o mochiaruite imasu.
I always have a book with me. - 毎日読書をします。
Mainichi dokusho o shimasu.
I read every day. - たくさん｛本・雑誌・記事・ブログ｝を読みます。
Takusan {hon/zasshi/kiji/burogu} o yomimasu.
I read a lot of books/magazines/articles/blogs. - 毎晩布団の中で読書をします。
Maiban futon no naka de dokusho o shimasu.
I read every night in bed. - ｛ネット・携帯・タブレット｝で読書をします。
{Netto/Keitai/Taburetto} de dokusho o shimasu.
I read online/on my phone/on my tablet. - 私は本の虫です。
Watashi wa hon no mushi desu.
I’m a bookworm. (literally, I’m a book bug.) - 読書する時間があまりありません。
Dokusho suru jikan ga amari arimasen.
I don’t have time to read very much. - ｛ほとんど・あまり｝読書はしません。
{Hotondo/Amari} dokusho wa shimasen.
I seldom read/I don’t read much. - 私の町にとてもいい本屋があります。
Watashi no machi ni totemo ii hon’ya ga arimasu.
There’s a great bookstore in my town. - 図書館で読書をするのが好きです。
Toshokan de dokusho o suruno ga suki desu.
I like to read at the library. - ｛図書館で・友達から｝たくさん本を借ります。
{Toshokan de/Tomodachi kara} takusan hon o karimasu.
I borrow a lot of books from the library/from my friends. - 本をたくさん持っています。
Hon o takusan motte imasu.
I have a lot of books. - 毎週新しい本をダウンロードしています。
Maishuu atarashii hon o daunroodo shite imasu.
I download a new book every week.
どんな本が好きですか。 Don’na hon ga suki desu ka. What kind of books do you like?
If you like to read, you probably have a favorite genre.
- フィクションが好きです。
Fikushon ga suki desu.
I like fiction. - 小説を読みます。
Shousetsu o yomimasu.
I read novels. - 短編小説を読みます。
Tanpen shousetsu o yomimasu.
I read short stories. - 戯曲を読みます。
Gikyoku o yomimasu.
I read plays. - ノンフィクションが好きです。
Nonfikushon ga suki desu.
I like nonfiction. - 文学作品を好んで読みます。
Bungaku sakuhin o kononde yomimasu.
I prefer literary classics. - 伝記が好きです。
Denki ga suki desu.
I like biographies. - 歴史関連が好きです。
Rekishi kanren ga suki desu.
I like books about history. - ミステリーをよく読みます。
Misuterii o yoku yomimasu.
I read a lot of mysteries. - エスエフが好きです。
Esuefu ga suki desu.
I love science fiction. - ファンタジー小説が好きです。
Fantajii shousetsu ga suki desu.
I love fantasies. - 恋愛小説が好きです。
Ren’ai shousetsu ga suki desu.
I like romance novels. - 詩集をよく読みます。
Shishuu o yoku yomimasu.
I read a lot of poetry. - アート関連の本をよく買います。
Aato kanren no hon o yoku kaimasu.
I buy a lot of art books. - 健康や運動関連の本をよく読みます。
Kenkou ya undou kanren no hon o yoku yomimasu.
I read a lot of books on health and fitness. - 経営と経済関連の本を好んで読みます。
Keiei to keizai kanren no hon o kononde yomimasu.
I prefer books on business and economics. - 宗教やスピリチュアル関連の本を読みます。
Shuukyou ya supirichuaru kanren no hon o yomimasu.
I read books about religion and spirituality. - 政治関連の本を読むのが好きです。
Seiji kanren no hon o yomuno ga suki desu.
I like to read books about politics. - 料理本を買うのが好きです。
Ryouribon o kauno ga suki desu.
I love to buy cookbooks. - 旅行関連の本をたくさん持っています。
Ryokou kanren no hon o takusan motte imasu.
I have a lot of travel books. - 漫画が好きです。
Manga ga suki desu.
I love comic books/manga. - 建築関連の本をたくさん持っています。
Kenchiku kanren no hon o takusan motte imasu.
We have a lot of architecture books. - 子供と絵本を読みます。
Kodomo to ehon o yomimasu.
I read children’s books with my kids. - 教科書はとても高いです。
Kyoukasho wa totemo takai desu.
Textbooks are very expensive.
これはいい本です。 Kore wa ii hon desu. This is a great book.
Hopefully you enjoy what you’re reading. If that’s the case, you may want to say:
- この本が好きです。
Kono hon ga suki desu.
I love this book. - とてもいい本です。
Totemo ii hon desu.
It’s a really good book. - この本は｛面白い・楽しい｝です。
Kono hon wa {omoshiroi/tanoshii} desu.
This book is interesting/exciting. - この本は文章が美しいです。
Kono hon wa bunshou ga utsukushii desu.
This book is beautifully written. - ｛他にない・予想外の｝話の展開です。
{Hoka ni nai/yosougai no} hanashi no tenkai desu.
The plot is original/surprising. - 彼は私が一番好きな登場人物です。
Kare wa watashi ga ichiban sukina toujou jinbutsu desu.
He’s my favorite character. - 彼女は私が一番好きな登場人物です。
Kanojo wa watashi ga ichiban sukina toujou jinbutsu desu.
She’s my favorite character. - この本は読み始めたらやめられません！
Kono hon wa yomihajimetara yameraremasen!
I can’t put this book down! - この本を読んだ方がいいと思います。お勧めです。
Kono hon o yonda hou ga ii to omoimasu. Osusume desu.
You have to read this book. I highly recommend it. - この本はよく売れています。
Kono hon wa yoku urete imasu.
This book is very popular. - この本はベストセラーです。
Kono hon wa besutoseraa desu.
This book is a best seller.
この本はひどいです！ Kono hon wa hidoi desu! This book is terrible!
Of course, not all books are great. If you’re reading something you don’t like, you may want to say:
- この本は好きではありません。
Kono hon wa suki dewa arimasen.
I don’t like this book. - この本はひどいです。
Kono hon wa hidoi desu.
This book is terrible. - この本はつまらないです。
Kono hon wa tsumaranai desu.
This book is boring. - 文章がひどいです。
Bunshou ga hidoi desu.
The writing is awful. - ありがちな話の展開です。
Arigachi na hanashi no tenkai desu.
The plot is not original. - 登場人物が面白くありません。
Toujou jinbutsu ga omoshiroku arimasen.
The characters are not interesting. - 翻訳がひどいです。
Hon’yaku ga hidoi desu.
This is a bad translation. - あの｛本・作家｝は好きではありません。
Ano {hon/sakka} wa suki dewa arimasen.
I can’t stand that book/that author. - 第一章も読み終わりませんでした。
Dai isshou mo yomiowarimasendeshita.
I didn’t even finish the first chapter. - この本は｛時間・お金｝の無駄です。
Kono hon wa {jikan/okane} no muda desu.
This book is a waste of time/money.
