It’s 겨울 gyeoul (winter) in the northern hemisphere, which means that in many places 매우 추워요 maeu chuwoyo (it’s very cold). In this post we’ll learn some Korean vocabulary for talking about cold winter weather.
밖은 추워요! bakk-eun chuwoyo! It’s Cold Outside!
Let’s start with some basic expressions that will help you talk about cold winter weather.
- 추워요.

It’s cold. - 너무 추워요!
neomu chuwoyo!
It’s freezing! - 눈이 내려요.
nun-i naelyeoyo.
It’s snowing.
- 진눈깨비가 내려요.
jinnunkkaebi-ga naelyeoyo.
It’s sleeting. - 춥고 바람이 불어요.
chubgo balam-i buleoyo.
It’s cold and windy. - 눈이 아름다워요.
nun-i areumdawoyo.
The snow is beautiful. - 이번주에 눈보라가 칠 거예요.
ibeonju-e nunbola-ga chil geoyeyo.
We’re going to have a blizzard this week. - 호수가 얼었어요.
hosu-ga eoleosseoyo.
The lake is frozen. - 눈이 녹아요.
nun-i nogayo.
The snow is melting. - 나는 떨고 있어요.
na-neun tteolgo isseoyo.

Not everyone hates the snow. If you’re a kid, or a kid at heart, you may enjoy some fun winter activities.
- 눈을 좋아해요.

Let’s make a snowman. - 이번 주말에 스키 타러 갈 거예요.

Let’s have a snowball fight! - 아이들은 눈으로 요새를 만들고 있어요.

Of course, winter isn’t all fun and games.
- 눈을 싫어해요.

I have to shovel the driveway. - 도로가 빙판길이고 위험해요.

The roads are icy and dangerous. - 인도에서 미끄러졌어요.

I slipped on the sidewalk. - 추운 날씨를 안 좋아해요!

겨울 옷 gyeoul ot Winter Clothes
If you have to go outside, you need to dress appropriately. You’ll probably wear: 겨울 코트 gyeoul koteu (a winter coat), 모자 moja (a hat), 스카프/목도리 seukapeu/mogdoli (a scarf), 장갑 janggab (gloves), 벙어리 장갑 beong-eoli janggab (mittens), 부츠 bucheu (boots).
- 오늘 모자와 장갑이 필요해요.
oneul mojawa janggab-i pil-yohaeyo.
I need a hat and gloves today. - 이 코트는 충분히 무겁지 않아요.
i koteu-neun chungbunhi mugeobji anayo.
This coat isn’t heavy enough! - 방수 부츠가 있어요?

Do you have waterproof boots? - 스웨터와 코트를 입었어요.

아늑하고 조용한 저녁 aneughago joyonghan jeonyeog Cozy, Quiet Evenings
But inside, you can still feel 따뜻하고 아늑한 ttatteushago aneughan (warm and cozy). You can sit next to 난로 nanlo (a fire), and maybe enjoy 차 한잔cha hanjan (a cup of tea) or better yet, 핫 초콜릿 한잔 hat chokollit hanjan (a cup of hot chocolate). Just get 담요 damyo (a blanket), maybe 좋은 책 joeun chaeg (a good book), and you’re ready to make the most out of 추운 날과 긴 밤 chuun nalgwa gin bam (the cold days and long nights). It’s only a few more months until the spring!

nanlo yeop-eseo mom-eul ttatteushage hago isseoyo.
I’m warming up next to the fire. - 담요 있어요?
dam-yo iss-eoyo?
Do you have a blanket? - 겨울에 일찍 자요.
gyeoul-e iljjig jayo.
I go to bed early in the winter.
