People keep all sorts of animals as pets, but the most common ones are собака (f) a dog, кошка (f), кот (m) a cat, золотая рыбка (f) a goldfish, длиннохвостый попугай (m) a parakeet, попугай (m) a parrot, хомяк (m) a hamster. Two animals that aren’t usually pets but that you can often find in or around buildings are: мышь/мышка (f) a mouse, крыса (f) a rat.

We have a dog and a cat. - Как зовут твою (вашу) собаку / кошку?
What’s your dog’s/cat’s name? - Я играю с нашим щенком.
I’m playing with our puppy. - Я глажу нашего котёнка.
I’m petting our kitten.

Does your dog bite? - Ваша кошка царапается?
Does your cat scratch? - У меня есть золотая рыбка в аквариуме.
I have a goldfish in a fishbowl. - У меня в аквариуме много рыбок.

We have two hamsters in a cage. - Мой попугай много разговаривает.
My parrot talks a lot. - Я закричал(а), когда увидел(а) мышь.
I screamed when I saw a mouse. - Это не мышь, это крыса!
That’s not a mouse, it’s a rat!
Какой звук издаёт собака? What sound does a dog make?
In English, dogs say “woof” and cats say “meow,” but of course that’s all different in Russian.
- Собаки лают. Собака говорит: «Гав!»
Dogs bark. A dog says “Woof!” - Кошки мяукают. Кот говорит: «Мяу!»
Cats meow. A cat says “Meow!” - Птицы щебечут. Птица говорит: «Чик чирик!»
Birds chirp. A bird says “Tweet!” - Коровы мычат. Корова говорит «му!».
Cows moo. A cow says “moo.” - Петухи кукарекают. Петух говорит: «Кукареку!».
Roosters crow. A rooster says “cock-a-doodle-do.” - Утки крякают. Утка говорит «кря кря».
Ducks quack. A duck says “quack.” - Поросята визжат. Поросёнок говорит «хрю хрю».
Pigs squeal. A pig says “oink oink.” - Собаки рычат, когда злятся.
Dogs growl when they’re angry. - Кошки мурлыкают, когда им хорошо..
Cats purr when they’re happy.

The most usual animals on a farm are: лошадь (f) a horse, корова (f) a cow, бык (m) a bull, поросёнок (m)/ свинья (f) a pig, овца (f) a sheep, цыплёнок (m) / курица (f) a chicken, гусь (m) a goose, коза (f) a goat, осёл (m) a donkey.
- Лошадь бежит по пастбищу.
The horse is running in the pasture. - Коровы в коровнике.
The cows are in the barn. - Свиньи лежат в грязи.
The pigs are lying in the mud. - Цыплята в курятнике.
The chickens are in the coop. - Фермер доит коров.
The farmer milks the cows. - Курицы откладывают яйца.
Chickens lay eggs. - Мы получаем шерсть от овец.
Wool comes from sheep.
Some other words related to animals that you want to know are: мех (m) / шерсть (f) fur, весы (pl) scales, хвост (m) a tail, копыто (n) a hoof, рог (m) a horn, перо (n) a feather, грива (f) a mane, коготь (m) a claw.
- У лошади красивая грива.
The horse has a beautiful mane. - У гуся белые перья.
The goose has white feathers. - У быков есть рога.
Bulls have horns. - У поросёнка есть маленький хвостик.
The pig has a little tail. - У каких животных есть копыта?
Which animals have hooves? - Oсторожно! У кота острые когти.
Be careful! The cat has sharp claws.

Here’s some vocabulary for our feathered friends: птица (f) a bird, утка (f) a duck, орёл (m) an eagle, ястреб (m) a hawk, голубь (m) a pigeon, индейка (f) a turkey, павлин (m) a peacock, лебедь (m) a swan, сова (f) an owl, чайка (f) a seagull.

Do you hear the birds? - Рядом с озером водятся утки.
There are some ducks next to the lake. - Орлы летают очень высоко.
Eagles fly very high. - У павлинов красивые перья.
Peacocks have beautiful feathers. - В парке много голубей.
There are a lot of pigeons in the park. - Лебеди – очень изящные животные.
Swans are very elegant animals. - В лесу ухает сова.
An owl is hooting in the woods. - Чайки летают над пляжем.
The seagulls are flying over the beach.

Depending on where you live, you may not need to go to a zoo to see these animals. But for most of us, a zoo is the only place where we’ll see these: слон (m) an elephant, лев (m) a lion, тигр (m) a tiger, жираф (m) a giraffe, зебра (f) a zebra, носорог (m) a rhinoceros, обезьяна (f) a monkey, горилла (f) a gorilla, бегемот (m) a hippopotamus.
- У слонов есть хоботы и длинные бивни.
Elephants have trunks and long tusks. - Львы рычат и рыкают.
Lions roar and snarl. - У тигров есть полосы.
Tigers have stripes. - У жирафов очень длинные шеи.

What kind of fish live in this lake? - На этом камне черепаха.

Snails move very, very slowly. - Бобры жуют деревья и строят плотины.
Beavers chew trees and make dams. - Это аллигатор или крокодил?

In the ocean, you may see: акула (f) a shark, кит (m) a whale, дельфин (m) a dolphin, краб (m) a crab, омар (m) a lobster, медуза (f) a jellyfish, морская звезда (f) a starfish, морской ёж (m) a sea urchin, угорь (m) an eel, моллюск (m) a clam, мидия (f) a mussel, креветка (f) a shrimp, осьминог (m.) an octopus, кальмар (m.) a squid.

I’m afraid of sharks, so I don’t swim in the ocean! - Мы видели дельфинов, плавающих около пляжа.

Ouch! I stepped on a sea urchin. That’s painful! - Возле / около этих скал/камней много крабов.
There are a lot of crabs near those rocks. - Моллюски живут в песке.
Clams live in the sand. - Мидии живут на камнях.
Mussels live on rocks.

There’s a big spider crawling on the wall in my bedroom! - Сегодня вечером меня кусают комары.
The mosquitos are biting me tonight. - Меня ужалила пчела!
I was stung by a bee! - Бабочки красивы и красочны.
Butterflies are beautiful and colorful. - Ночью вокруг фонарей летают мотыльки.
Moths fly around lights at night. - Червяки живут в земле.
Worms live in the soil. - Божьи коровки – чёрные и красные.
Ladybugs are black and red. - Осторожно! Здесь есть скорпионы!
