음악 eumag Music: Talking About Music in Korean

In this post we’ll talk about vocabulary and expressions related to music: what you listen to, what you dance to, and what kind of musical instruments you may play.

노래가 좋아요. i norae-ga joayo. I love this song.

Let’s start with some of the basics. If you want to talk about music, you’ll want to know how to say: 노래 norae song, 가수 gasu singer, 그룹 / 밴드geulub / baendeu group/band, 앨범 aelbeom album, 가사 gasa lyrics, 라디오 radio radio, 뮤직비디오 myujigbidio music video, 음악을 듣다  (들어요) eumag-eul deudda (deuleoyo) to listen to music, 노래 하다  (해요) nolae hada (haeyo) to sing, 춤추다 (춤춰요) chumchuda (chumchwoyo) to dance.

    What’s your favorite band?
  • 제일 좋아하는 가수는 누구예요?

어떤 종류의 음악을 좋아해요? eotteon jonglyu-e eumag-eul joahaeyo? What kind of music do you like?

People have all sorts of different taste in music. What kind of music do you like? 팝 음악 pab eumag pop music, 댄스 음악 daenseu eumag dance music, 디스코 diseuko disco, 힙합 hibhab hip hop, 케이-팝 kei-pab K-pop, 제이-팝 jei-pab J-pop, 록 log rock, 하드 록 hadeu log  hard rock, 컨트리 음악 keonteuli eumag country music, 전자 음악 jeonja eumag  electronic music, 클래식 음악 keullaeshig eumag classical music, 오페라 opela opera, 재즈 jaejeu jazz, 블루스 beulluseu blues, 레게 lege reggae, 펑크 록 peongkeu log punk rock, 민속 음악 minsog eumag folk music, 앰비언트 aembieonteu ambient music, 가스펠 음악  gaseupel eumag gospel music.

  • 록/재즈/블루스 음악을 더 좋아해요.
    log/ jaejeu/ beulluseu eumag-eul deo joahaeyo.

    I prefer rock/jazz/classical music.
  • 디스코/블루스/레게 음악을 안 좋아해요.

    What’s your favorite kind of music?
  • (우리는) 음악 취향이 달라요. (우리는) 서로의 음악에 동의하지 않아요.
    (uli-neun) eumag chwihyang-i dallayo. (uli-neun) seolo-e eumag-e dong-uihaji anayo.
    We have different musical tastes. We never agree on music.
  • 다음 노래를 선택해요.
    da-eum nolae-leul seontaeghaeyo.
    You can choose the next song.

악기를 연주하세요? aggi-leul yeonjuhaseyo? Do you play any instruments?

If you want to talk about music, it’s helpful to know how to say different instruments: 피아노 piano piano, 기타 gita guitar, 전기 기타 (일렉 기타) jeongi gita (illeg gita) electric guitar, 드럼 deureom drum, 건반 (키보드) geonban (kibodeu) keyboard, 바이올린 baiollin violin, 트럼펫 teureompet trumpet, 플룻 peullut flute, 클라리넷 keullalinet clarinet, 색소폰 saegsopon saxophone, 첼로 chello cello, 튜바 tyuba tuba, 트롬본 teulombon trombone, 오르간 oleugan organ, 아코디언 akodieon accordion. To say that you play a musical instrument, use the verb 연주하다  yeonjuhada (to play). You may also hear the verbs 치다 chida (to hit, to strike), 켜다 kyeoda (to saw, to scrape), or 불다 bulda (to blow), depending on the type of instrument.

  • 피아노/기타/드럼/건반/오르간을 치다
    piano/gita/deuleom/geonban/oleugan-eul chida

    to play (hit/strike) piano, guitar, keyboard, organ
  • 바이올린/첼로를 켜다
    baiollin/chelloleul kyeoda

    to play (saw/scrape) the violin/cello
  • 트럼펫/플룻/클라리넷/색소폰/튜바/트롬본을 불다.
    teuleompes/peullus/keullalines/saegsopon/tyuba/teulombon-eul bulda

    to play (blow) the trumpet, flute, clarinet, saxophone, tuba, trombone
  • (우리는) 합창단에서 노래해요.
    (uli-neun) habchangdan-eseo nolaehaeyo.
    We sing in a choir.
  • (나는) 어렸을 피아노 레슨을 받았어요.
    (na-neun) eolyeosseul ttae piano leseun-eul badasseoyo.
    I took piano lessons when I was younger.
  • 기타를 어떻게 치는지 배우고 싶어요.
    gita-leul eotteogge chineunji baeugo shipeoyo.
    I want to learn how to play the guitar.
  • 바이올린을 연주하지만, 하지는 안하요.
    baiollin-eul yeonjuhajiman, jal hajineun anayo.
    I play the violin, but not very well.
  • 샤워하면서 노래하는 것을 좋아해요.
    shyawohamyeon-seo nolaehaneun geos-eul joahaeyo.
    I like to sing in the shower.
  • 씨는 노래를 정말 해요. 목소리가 정말 좋아요.  
    …sshi-neun
    nolae-leul jeongmal jal haeyo. mogsoliga jeongmal joayo.
    You sing really well. You have a great voice.
  • 그는/그녀는 오케스트라에서 클라리넷을 연주해요.
    geu-neun/geunyeo-neun okeseuteula-eseo keullalines-eul yeonjuhaeyo.
    He/She plays clarinet in an orchestra.
  • 그는/그녀는 밴드에서 드럼을 연주해요.
    geu-neun/geunyeo-neun baendeu-eseo deuleom-eul yeonjuhaeyo.
    He/She plays drums in a band.
  • 첼로를 전문적으로 연주해요, 아니면 취미로 해요?
    chello-leul jeonmunjeog-eulo yeonjuhaeyo, animyeon chwimilo haeyo?
    Do you play the cello professionally or as a hobby?

Music isn’t just for listening to at home, which brings us to: 콘서트 komseoteu a concert, 오케스트라 okeseuteula orchestra, 노래방 nolaebang karaoke, 디제이 dijei DJ, 나이트클럽 naiteukeulleob nightclub.

  • 노래방에 가자!
    nolaebang-e gaja!
    Let’s go to a karaoke bar!
  • 콘서트에 가고 싶어요.
    konseoteu-e gago shipeoyo.
    I want to go to a concert.
  • 이번 주말 콘서트 표를 샀어요.
    ibeon jumal konseoteu pyo-leul sasseoyo.
    I bought tickets to a concert this weekend.
  • 교향악 연주에 가고 싶어요.
    gyohyang-ag yeonju-e gago shipeoyo.
    We love to go to the symphony.
  • 느린/빠른 노래에 춤추는 것을 좋아해요.
    neulin/ppaleun nolae-e chumchuneun geos-eul joahaeyo.
    I like to dance to slow/fast songs.
  • 밴드 공연 보는 것을 좋아해요. 라이브 음악을 아주 좋아해요.
    baendeu gongyeon boneun geos-eul joahaeyo. laibeu eumag-eul aju joahaeyo.
    I like to see bands perform. I love live music.
  • 친구의 밴드가 이번 주말에 (술집)에서 연주해요.
    chingu-e baendeu-ga ibeon jumal-e ba (suljib)-eseo yeonjuhaeyo.
    My friend’s band is playing at a bar this weekend.
  • (우리는) 나이트클럽에 가서 밤새 춤을 췄어요.
    (uli-neun) naiteukeulleob-e gaseo bamsae chumeul chwosseoyo.
    We went to a nightclub and danced all night.
  • 그는/그녀는 내가 가장 좋아하는 디제이 예요.
    geu-neun/geunyeo-neun naega gajang joahaneun dijei yeyo.
    He/She is my favorite DJ.
