A primavera chegou! Spring is here!
At long last, o tempo frio the cold weather and os dias curtos the short days of winter are over, at least in the northern hemisphere. Even if other things going on in the world are not very happy, at least we have the spring to enjoy. And that means o tempo está mais quente the weather is warmer, os dias estão mais compridos the days are longer, há mais luz do sol there’s more sunlight, and of course há flores lindas there are beautiful flowers. So, let’s cover some happy, bright vocabulary to help you talk about the spring in Portuguese.
Os dias estão mais quentes. The days are warmer.
The best thing about spring is probably o tempo bom the nice weather and o brilho do sol the sunshine. Hopefully you’ll find plenty of occasions to say:
- O tempo está bom.
The weather is nice. - Está quente hoje.
It’s warm today. - Está ensolarado hoje.
It’s sunny today. - O céu está azul.
The sky is blue. - O sol está brilhando.
The sun is shining.
Os dias estão mais compridos. The days are longer
Every year nós adiantamos os relógios we turn the clocks ahead and we immediately have an hour more of sunlight. Which of course means:
- Temos mais luz do dia.
We have more daylight. - A noite é mais curta.
The night is shorter. - O sol se põe mais tarde.
The sun sets later. - O sol se levanta mais cedo.
The sun rises earlier.
Even if that last one isn’t technically true, it seems that way. And spring is as much an attitude as anything else. Speaking of which…
Estou feliz! I am happy!
It’s no exaggeration that many people’s moods change in the spring. Everything is brighter and happier, so you might want to say:
- Estou de bom humor hoje.
I’m in a good mood today. - Estou feliz porque é primavera.
I’m happy because it’s spring. - Tenho mais energia.
I have more energy. - Me sinto ótimo(a).
I feel great.
A natureza: Nature
How about a natureza nature? In the spring you probably want to talk about os pássaros the birds, as flores the flowers, and as folhas verdes the green leaves.
- As flores estão desabrochando.
The flowers are blooming. - As folhas estão brotando.
Leaves are budding. - Os pássaros estão cantando.
The birds are singing. - O ar está fresco.
The air is fresh.
Even if things are difficult, thinking about spring will hopefully bring um sorriso a smile to your face.
